Efforts Made from the Month of February for Treatment and Prevention
of COVID -19 at UPUMS, Saifai
In view of the spread of the global pandemic COVID -19, the following are the preparations made by
the university to stop the spread of this pandemic and to facilitate the treatment of infected patients.
1. Action was started on making COVID -19 lab in the first week of March itself.
2. On 19.03.2020, work was started by issuing advisory for the
health care professionals and other personnel for training of

treatment of infected patients
3. Science-based videos were released from time to time for
increasing awareness about prevention and treatment of
Covid-19 which remained very effective and are still
running in entire country.
4. Initially, the sample collection work was started in the
university as per the instructions of ICMR New Delhi, but
soon the university’s lab converted into an important lab,
we investigated samples to the count of 13000 till 30th May
2020.
5. At present, 250 to 1550 samples are being tested daily in the lab.
From the point of view, the lab of the university has a full-
fledged facility at par with the labs of other premier institutions
in the state &country in which the samples of the 10 to 15
surrounding districts are being examined.
6. On date 23.03.2020, the old building of the 200 beds was converted into as COVID-
19 hospital of 200 beds, where necessary changes were made as per the standards and
in other separate floor of a building triage ward, isolation ward was created. Covid-19
hospital is equipped with ventilators & other facilities as per the standards of central
government and state government, ICU was established on a war footing with end
support. It is a full independent hospital with labs, Radiology, Dialysis, laundry, post
operative public cubicle, obstetric facility & operation theatre.
7. A separate mortuary, separate gates for patients and health worker were created.

8. In addition to the above, 50 bedded quarantine ward was prepared for COVID -19
patients/suspects in the hospital premises, whereas a total of 549 quarantine beds
were prepared in the various guest houses and under construction buildings of
university for health care workers as there were no hotels in the small village. These
rooms have independent toilets
.
9. According to the instructions of the government, Flu OPDs was started in the isolated
place on date 23.03.2020. Doctors and other supporting staff were deployed according to
the standards set in this OPD. While routine OPD was suspended except emergency
services, antenatal and neonatal services, chemotherapy, radiotherapy & emergency
dialysis.
10. At present, about 100 physicians, 400 nursing and housekeeping staff have been
trained in Infection, Prevention & Control, Biomedical Waste Management, triage
management, quarantine policies, handwashing and demonstration of PPE use.
Training programs for other doctors, nursing staff, technical and housekeeping staff
are going on.

11. For the awareness of the general public, large LCD screens was installed at two
places in the hospital, on which continuous awareness programs are being conducted
for prevention of COVID-19, more installation are scheduled. Along with this,
programs were being organized for awareness of prevention of Covid-19 by Resident
Doctors of Social and Preventive Medicine Department at separate gate of hospital.
12. Another LCD was installed for training of health worker rendering services to
patients of Covid 19.
13. As per the instructions of the government on date 24.03.2020, seven committees
were formed for the treatment of Covid 19 patients, who are constantly working and
their monitoring is done on day to day basis.
14. The Vice Chancellor is meeting daily (even on
holidays) along with the Chairmen of above seven
committees, in-charges of various services and with
all deans to discuss the preparations, progress and
problems of COVID-19 and being aware of the day-
to- day progress.

15. As per the prescribed standards, necessary materials such as N95 masks, PPE Kits,
sanitizer, gloves and 3-layared masks etc. were made available by purchasing certain
quantities and supply orders are issued from time to time after assessing the future
requirement and purchasing the material.
16. Corona control room & health care with dedicated
landline and mobile number were established on the
first floor of the trauma centre on 28.03.2020, which is
benefitting the people.
17. A bank account was opened with the name of corona and patient welfare fund
dated 30.03.2020, in which if any person wants to donate for COVID-19 fund can
deposit in the said account.
18. There is a provision to send doctors and personnel doing duty in Covid-19 ward to
quarantine with the prescribed protocol, where healthy diet is being arranged by
university for them.
19. The government has declared Covid-19 hospital as a level 3 plus on it’s merit.
20. The university has so far submitted 39 Covid-19 research papers in national &
international research journals and 27 of these have been published, nearly 12 papers
are in press.

21. Minutes were released on Ayurveda principles for the benefit of common people
during lock down and for flu patients.
22. Emergency services and treatment of patients admitted to hospital are being reviewed
from time to time.
23. Careful medical advice is also provided over the phone
subsequently Tele-OPD was started where 180-250 cases are
given advice per day.
24. Medicines have also been provided to some outside patients during
lockdown, because of difficulty in finding them.
25. Sanitizer tunnel has been established for the health worker outside COVID-19
hospital.
26. Apart from flu OPD, emergency screening of patients was also arranged in
emergency separately in order to avoid mixing of patients.
27. 72 cases were treated in Covid hospital with utmost care & all were discharged
following care.
28. Ayurvedic Kadha(Raj Nirman Kadha) was introduced for Covid patients and for
quarantine health worker. It was also designed by VC as he is trained in Ayurveda
(Ph.d.).
29. Ayurvedic medicine was prepared for trial in association with Ayurvedic adviser of
University. It was tested in 20 symptomatic cases of Covid of mild moderate to
severe grades. All 20 were discharged successfully.
30. Covid committee review meetings are done every day without break on holidays.

31. Covid committee has been empowered to take decision of procurements, ethical crisis
and other administrative issues in order to solve the problems not covered under
existing rules because it has concerned authorities.
32. After successful treatment, total 83 patients of Covid-19 have been discharged on
different dates from 03 May 2020 onwards to 30th May, 2020.
33. A novel Research against Corona medicine has passed first phase of clinical trial &
manuscript is being sent for publication.
34. All routine surgeries, emergencies, trauma services have been restored in non Covid
hospital fully.
35. Universities produced it’s own Sodium Hypochloride Solution for cleaning named as
UPUMS Sodium Hypochloride.
36. Separate hand cleaning machine are installed at the gate of Administrative Block.
37. Several Videos & news are being released for public in order to build up

38. Delivered 8 classes to Doctors of State & Graduate students of Delhi University on
Zoom on Covid.
39. Participated in meeting of computer based Artificial Intelligence for recognizing
Chest X Rays of COVID-19 with AKTU Lucknow on 23rd May, 2020 at 1 PM.
40. Mass casualties of road side accidents of 32, 28 & 07 patients were Managed
successfully during peak of Corona in Non Covid Hospital.
41. Invented novel RNB (Raj Nirwan Bati) to treat Covid-19 Patients.
42. Studies the effect of RNB in 30 symptomatic cases of Covid 19 successfully to
produce a level 3 evidence on the scale of evidence based medicine.
43. Declared the drug successful in treating the cases of Covid 19. Preparations are going
on to bring this medicine for public.

44. Created help desk, public readdressal system and public awareness hoarding at
required places of university.
45. Book Published on “Covidology” with section on scientific publications
infrastructure development & policy making for effective management of COVID-
19 at UPUMS, Saifai in 15th July, 2020.
46. RNB was licensed on 28-8-2020 by Uttarakhand Ayush Directorate.
47. Started Convalescence Plasma Therapy in August 2020.
48. Enhanced ventilators and ICU beds in Covid hospital, ICU beds increased up to 140.
49. Results of 2 RCTs of RNB are in process of publication in Scientific Journals.
50. OPD for post Covid cases started in November 2020.
