WINWINFOLK stars Skinny Lister arein a world of their own —using MORRIS DANCING asthe inspiration for their music. The Greenwich group are givingthe historical English dance amodern twist.Lead singer Dan Heptinstall said:“We’re interested in the musicfrom a traditional point of viewand taking fragments of it, so wetrying to keep it alive in a popway, which no one has really done.“It probably wouldn’t be thatclear to someone if they knewnothing about Morris dancing.

Mental“Our next single Rolling Over isan original song, but it has gotfragments of a well-known Morristune. It might prick their ears upbut they won’t necessarily thinkit’s a Morris song.“The girl in our band, Lorna, does dance around but it’s notchoreographed, it’s just her goingmental.“People at the gigs dance butit’s not Morris dancing routines —it’s more bouncing about having agood time.”The group own the official titleof Britain’s Hardest Working Band, which they earned after a sterlingeffort at last year’s festivals.Dan, 36, recalled: “It was in the30s — I think it was 35 in total.“Performing Right Society col-lect the royalties for live perfor-mances and over the year we

came top of their list for themost festival performers, justabove Ed Sheeran and some otherreally big names.“We went to Bestival and didfive gigs there, so it wasn’t justthe number of festivals, it was thenumber of shows we did at eachone.”They are in for another busy

summer, kicking off with a UKtour — which stops at King Tut’sin Glasgow on June 4 — then theirsecond American tour this year.Dan said: “This one will be ourfirst venture in Scotland.“The venue is infamous downhere, so we’re looking forward toseeing what the audience is like.“We did a tour of Ireland last

year and they embraced it. Sobecause of that, I’ve less trepida-tion about coming up to Scotland, with the Morris dancing thingbeing so English.“We are also pleasantly sur-prised by the reaction in America.“A lot of them mistake us foran Irish band, but it’s working inour favour so we’re happy to gowith it.“We’re on the Warped Tourover there this summer, which is42 gigs in 50 days, so we’ll covera lot of miles.

Raucous“To do that we’re sacrificingsome UK festivals, but we feel asthough we should seize the oppor-tunities that come up.”The band also release theirdebut album Forge & Flagon onJune 11.Dan added: “We recorded it alittle while ago so it’s good tofinally release it to the world.“I would call it punk folkmusic. It’s a difficult one. Someof the stuff is raucous andup-tempo, but then it goes to theother more melodic end.“We do the same in our liveshows — we like to go on a jour-ney and cover both elements.“We recorded it sitting in a cir-cle with our instruments and laidit down as a band — we wantedto capture what we do live.“And we are just loving whatwe’re doing right now.”Q Pre-order the album and get tourtickets at skinnylister.com

DAVEY HORNEWHO: Davey Horne (vocals, guitars, keys), Billy Kay (bass), AndrewDouglas (guitars), Lee Burgoyne(drums), Margret Dignan (vocals),Jamie Haffey (keys)WHERE: FalkirkFOR FANS OF: Al Green, PaoloNutini, Miles KaneJIM SAYS: Davey Horne onlyplayed his first solo shows lastyear, but is already attractingserious interest. The former Ray Summers

keyboard player possesses the sortof voice that puts him up there withScots legends like Frankie Miller,Alex Harvey and, if we include himas a Scot, Rod Stewart. At just 22, Davey’s mix of soul,

blues and rock belies his age. Clas-sic, timeless songs like Deep Downand By The End Of The Night pavethe way for a fruitful career.I first saw him last year at the

Wickerman Festival in Dumfriesand Galloway, and he turned lots ofheads at the Hog The Street eventin Edinburgh’s Princes Street lastNovember. His live CV also includes dates

supporting Miles Kane and Scotsfavourites Kassidy and he is on thebill for this year’s T In The Park.I’m a regular on the panel select-

ing unsigned acts to play the TBreak Stage at Balado. It getspretty heated when we’re downto the final few acts.If I was curating

the stage alone,Davey Hornewould have beena dead cert.Thankfully, I

wasn’t alone in

appreciating what he has to offer. He told me: “In all honesty, I wasreally surprised to get the call.“We put in our application at the

start of the year and kind of forgotabout it, but we were delighted tobe picked.“When you look at the panel of

judges and the other acts that werechosen, you realise what a greatcompliment it is.“It’s a pretty huge platform to

show what we can do.“Already, we’ve had press and

radio that we’ve never had before, all because of T Break.“All we need to do now is

rehearse twice as hard and keepour fingers crossed that our slotdoesn’t clash with anyone we wantto see!”I reckon Davey’s performance

will be one of the busiest in the TBreak tent across the whole week-end. It could indeed be the set thathelps take him to a whole newlevel, and I can’t wait to see how hegoes down.He is also booked for the Doune

The Rabbit Hole festival, plusSolfest in Cumbria and Tramlines inSheffield. Scotland’s next bigthing? You bet!MORE: facebook.com/daveyhorneQ Jim will be featuring Davey Hor-rne on In:Demand Uncut — Sun-
