Fresno State Physical Therapy Amputee Gait Clinic Dr. Bhupinder Singh & Melissa A. Miller

Education

Under the supervision of Dr. Bhupinder Singh, PT,PhD, Doctor of Physical Therapy students from allthree physical therapy cohorts experience workingwith amputees and analyzing amputee movement.This supplemental educational experience helpsimprove understanding within the students didacticcourse work and curriculum.

Community Involvement

The clinic also serves as a support group wheremembers can interact with other amputees, sharetheir experiences, and make emotional connectionswith their peers. Members can also receiveinformation on community services andopportunities.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The clinic has created multiple opportunities incollaborating with other colleges and departments oncampus, and through involvement with off campusclinicians and services. Further development of the clinicaspires to improve communication with medicalproviders within the community, and and to strive toprovide services and support to all amputees across theCentral Valley.

Intervention

The bi-annual clinic occurs once a semester, andstrives to provide services the underservedamputee community living in the Central Valley.Here, amputees can receive consultations fromphysical therapists, physicians, podiatrists,vascular specialists, and local prosthetists.

The clinic brings together local clinicians, facultyand students in the doctor of physical therapyprogram who work together to providepreventative care and manage any currentconditions afflicting these individuals.

Because many of these individuals come fromimpoverished or underserved areas, these freeservices are crucial in preventing further injuryand helping improve movement and quality oflife.

Opportunities for Research

Members of the clinic have the opportunity toparticipate in research led by doctor of physical therapystudent Melissa Miller. The study aims at improvingamputee gait, strength, mobility and quality of life.
