On Halloween, a Middletownamily narrowly escaped withtheir lives ater their bungalow at 7723 Main Street burst intoames. racy Fletcher was homealone with her three year old son,Colton. Her husband, Kevin, was on a business trip. Beore helet, Kevin asked his riend, andneighbor, to look in on the pair.
Luckily, Brent Moyer took the re-quest seriously. Brent stopped by or a visit. racy ran upstairs ora moment, leaving Colton watch-ing television in the back room.Brent walked in to nd Coltonlooking at the re. Brent grabbedColton, and hollered or racy toget out o the house. Te housewas enguled; the pair escapedwith the clothes on their back.
racy said she tried to go backinto the house with a hose, tosee i she could put the re out,and save her cats. wo o the catsescaped unharmed. A third, an
older cat, was seriously burned, and inhaled too much smoke;the cat is at the vet, but is not ex-pected to survive, even though itreceived medical attention at thescene rom the reghters.
Middletown Fire Chie Henry Shiley said the department wasat the scene within two minuteso receiving the call. StephensCity, and Shenandoah and War-ren County re departments alsoresponded. Te re took twenty
minutes to put out. Te reght-ers tore down all the walls in thehouse, luckily, because they oundre still burning inside the walls.Te heat in the house was so high, that it melted the solder on thecopper pipes. Superintendent o Public Works, Donald Riey, wascalled in to shut the water o tothe house. Former MiddletownMayor, and Frederick County Sheri, John Copeland, stoppedto direct trafc on Route 11.
Te house, which is owned by odd Kettlewell, is expected to bea complete loss. An investigation
into the actual cause o the recontinues.
As or the Fletchers, they lostmost all o their possessions. Teamily does not have rental insur-ance. Te only positive momentcame when the re departmentcarried out a settee. racy saw the settee, and started to cry. Allher pictures and mementos werestored inside. As bad as the setteelooked, the contents were sae.
Kevin was back at the house on
uesday, waiting or the investiga-tion to be completed, so he couldgo inside. He said walking intothe house was devastating. Te
amily has lived on Main Streetin Middletown or nine years andin the house in question or three years. Kevin does not think they will be able to salvage much romthe house.
Te Red Cross is paying or theamily to stay at a hotel or threenights. Ater that, the amily doesnot know what it will do. racy is in the hospital, suering romsmoke inhalation.
A donation box was set up
at own Hall in Middletown.Te rst thing the amily needsis clothes. Kevin is a 42” waist, and a 2XL tall. racy is a size

Te average price o a custom-built home this year has been
$240,000, but DJH does oerhouses or only $100,000. What-

DJH hires subcontractors thatspecialize in dierent areas o house construction. Some o them have been working or DJHor several years.
Construction is usually com-
pleted ater our months but canbe prolonged i the customerdecides to make changes in themiddle o construction.
Heckman encourages potentialhomeowners to consider a new home, claiming that a new homeis more energy efcient and haslower maintenance costs than aused home.
Heckman worked or H. J.Heinz Ketchup Corporation andcontrolled costs within the com-pany. In 1978, He took his eight years o cost control experienceand applied it to the construction
industry.He established DJH in 2002,
naming it ater his son, David, who draws the house plans, andgrandson, James. Te rst branchwas in Roanoke, and the com-pany expanded to Lynchburg in2006 and Winchester in 2008.
DJH has also made charitablecontributions to the areas in
which they build houses. DJH andsome subcontracters have provid-ed labor and housing materials tothose in need, and Heckman is anardent supporter o the MuscularDystrophy Association.
“I you’re going to be part o the local community, you needto step up and help those who areless ortunate,” said Heckman.
Heckman said the uncertaineconomy has decreased housesales but he plans to overcome itby “look[ing] at how you can bet-ter service the people. Te mar-ket, I don’t see it growing muchin the next year or two. So whatI have to do is give the person a
better value than anybody else,”said Heckman.
In an eort to do this, he triesto keep his prices air or the con-sumer.
“I look at my overhead and
mark it up based on that. I do notlook at what the market will bear,”said Heckman.
Since DJH builds homes inVirginia, West Virginia, Mary-land and Pennsylvania, the samequality o house is built in every location to ensure it will pass thebuilding inspection, no matterhow strict or lax the standardsare or the region.
DJH homes come with warran-
ties that promise a or 15 years, no struor 10 years, and amanship warranty.

Te incumbent candidate orBack Creek’s Frederick County Board o Supervisors is ada-mant about a couple o issues. His rst topic is taxes. He be-lieves that the County needsto nd ways to raise revenueto maintain the quality o theCounty’s education and publicsaety sectors, while keepingtaxes reasonable in the currenteconomy. Tis includes cuttingexpenses where they can be
cut, and shiting the unds tomore important areas.Gary’s other big issue is
transportation. Gary believes
the County should press Rich-mond to nd more money todeal with some o the County’s
transportation issues. Main-taining a dialogue with Rich-mond about our needs andpriorities, as well as undingissues, may help generate moreunds rom the State.
As the economy improves,Gary believes that more growthwill be coming to the County, both commercial and residen-tial, requiring upgrades to ourtransportation system to keepit unctioning. One project thatcould relieve trafc problemsthroughout the County wouldbe the completion o Route
37, so that it would circle theCounty, relieving cross-County trafc. Route 37, once com-pleted, will connect Route 37with Routes 50, 522, and Wellsown Pike.
Other transportation xesneeded in the County, accord-ing to Gary, are redesigning thetrafc exits o o I-81 at bothKernstown, and Stephens City.Te relocation o the cloverleaves is unded by the State.
For those living in the morerural areas o the County, Gary advocates providing moremaintenance money to sealcoat dirt roads, providing bothan environmental impact, as
well as saving VDO costs inmaintaining the road.
Gary graduated rom James
Wood High School in 1963.He worked as an automotivetechnician, until he was hiredby VDO as a Materials ech-nician, where he worked rom1964 until 1970. In 1970, Gary was hired by the City o Win-chester, where he moved upthrough the City ranks, rom1970 to 2006. He retired as the
Director o ransportation.Beginning in 2003, Gary wasthe President o the Frederick
County Republicans, until heresigned in 2004, to run or po-litical ofce. From 2004 until2008, Gary was a member o the Frederick County FinanceCommittee. He resigned rom

Fight Skin AllergiesWith Custom Pet Foods
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I readyour article on the Bichon Frisethathadskinallergieswithinterest. My own Bichon Frise, “Ally,” hadsevere skin allergies. The managerof my local pet store recommendedthat I look for a dry dog food thathad a single protein (rather thanproteins from different sources).I tried one called “Dick Van Pat-ten’s Natural Balance.” In a veryshort time, Ally’s skin allergy wascleared up. I hope this informationwill help your readers. — DorothyC., Richfield, Minn.
DEAR DOROTHY: Thanks! Thetype of food recommended is alsoknown as “limited ingredient” foodand is developed specifically for petswith sensitive stomachs or that haveskin rashes or other allergic reactionsto food.
Other manufacturers of limitedingredient pet food include BlueBuffalo with its “Basics” line of foods, Nature’s Variety Instinct L im-ited Ingredient, Wellness Dog SimpleFood Solutions, and Pinnacle. Own-ers whose pets have allergies can tryone or more of the foods above to seeif the problem clears up.
Another alternative is to make foodfor your pet from scratch, avoiding or limiting ingredients that can cause anupset stomach or skin reaction.
These ingredients include dairy, fish, corn, wheat, soy and yeast. Beef, chicken, fish or lamb also may cause
problems, and owners making home-
made food should feed each meatindividually to their pet to determinewhich one is tolerated best.
To make the most nutritious andsafest homemade food, ownersshould check out at least one pet foodrecipe book. There are some ingredi-ents, like onions, that should never beincluded in a pet’s meal.
