Singing the Psalm Settings
Psalm Refrains can be adapted to piano, organ, guitar accompaniment, or even SATB choir. The melodies, rhythms and harmonies are designed to embody the spirit of the text. Verse Chants are set for solo voice (Cantor) with sustained keyboard or guitar accompaniment.
General Directives for Chanting the Verses Consider the example below for a discussion of the various musical elements:
In the chanted verses, the music follows the “speech rhythm” of the text, flowing smoothly so that the text is understood and its meaning is clear. Black notes indicate that all the verses have only one syllable on that note. Open notes indicate that at least one verse has multiple syllables on the open note. Where there is only one syllable on an open note, the cantor should sing that syllable as though it is a black note–not sustaining that syllable–but maintaining the speech rhythm of the text. The Right Slash “ / ” indicates that one phrase ends and a new phrase begins on the same note, with a slight pause at the end of the phrase before the slash. For example, at the end of Verse 2a there is a pause between “creatures;” and “bless” to distinguish between the two phrases. Braces “{ }” act as repeat signs. For example, at the end of Verse 4a, the right bracket “}” indicates a repeat to the left bracket “{” at 4b. Thus, the cantor connects 4a and 4b to complete the phrase, “they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.” The braces in Verse 2a, 2b, and 2c, direct the cantor to connect all three lines: “the earth is full of your creatures; bless the Lord, O my soul! Alleluia!” Square Brackets “[ ]” indicate a repetition of words or phrases from the original text.
