Theotherday,IwasponderingwithaclergycolleaguewhatmakesForestHill
Unitedsounique.Itisnoteasytofindasimplewaytodescribeacommunitythatis
filledwithsuchwonderfulcomplexity.However,aftergivingitsomethought,the
wordthatkeptcomingtomindwas"empowered".
Thoseofyouwhogatherinthiscommunitybelieveyouhavethepowertobring
aboutchange;youbelieveyouhavethepowertodothingsthatmatter.Becauseyou
believethis,youactinmeaningfulways.
Intoday'sdayandage,theword"power"oftentakesonanegativetone,with
leaderssometimesmisusingandabusingtheirprivilege.However,asChristians,we
7
seepowerasGodorDivineEnergyand,whenweuseit,thatisGodworkingthrough
us.
Thisiswhy,eveninmyseventhyearofministryhere,itisstilladelighttopreachto
you,spendtimewithyou,andworknexttoyou.Thispoweriselectrifying-always
movingandopeningusupforgrowth.
AsyoureadthroughthepagesofthisAnnualReport,Iwantyoutorecognizethe
placeswhereourcommunityhasletGodworkthroughus,likeelectricityflowing
throughpowerlines.Weseethiswhenweoffercaretooneanother,whenweoffer
supporttorefugeefamilies,andwhenweworkatbeinganAffirmingCongregation,
withafocusonbeinginclusiveandhospitabletoallsexualorientationsandgender
identities.Intheseandalltheinstancesyouwillreadabout,thepowerwehaveused
isthepoweroflove.
OurSundaySchoolstudentsrightnowarelearningabouttheParableoftheGood
Samaritan.Whenyouconsiderthisstory,imagesofthepoormanbeateninthe
streetandthestrangerwhostoppedtohelpcometomind.Weoftenunderstandit
asastorythatteachesushowtoloveandwhoareneighboursare.Butit'salsoa
storyofempowerment.
Thisisastoryaboutchoosingtousethepowerthatlieswithintomakeadifference.
Whenyoudon'tbelieveyouhavesuchpower,youalltooeasilycrosstheroadand
avertyoureyes.Whenyoufeelthatpowerpulsingthroughyourveins,youjustas
easilygivelovewhereloveisneeded.
Aswegoforwardintoanewandexcitingyear,maywebeevenbraver,bolderand
moreeagertoliveoutourfaithbyloving,bothinthiscommunityandoutinthe
world.ToparaphraseJesus,loveGodwitheverythingyougot-heart,soul,guts,and
brain.Andthewaytodothatisbylovingyourneighbourasyourself.(Luke10:27)
Iwanttogivethankstoeachofyou.Youarethechurch.Whenyougatherhereto
worship,learninasmallgroup,findfellowship,undertakecommitteework,and
reachouttoothers,youaredoingGod'swork.Whenyouwalkordriveoutofthe
parkinglot,keepondoingit!

“Letgratitudebethepillowuponwhichyoukneeltosayyournightlyprayer.Andletfaithbethebridgeyoubuildtoovercomeevilandwelcomegood.”―MayaAngelou,Celebrations:RitualsofPeaceandPrayer
AsIwassittingdowntowritetheBoard’sReportfortheAnnualReport2016,
gratitudewasthewordthatpoppedintomyhead.Myheartisfilledwithgratitude
whenIthinkaboutallthewaysinwhichourchurchcommunityhasbeenablessing
inmylifeandinthelifeofmyfamily;andallthewaysinwhichForestHillUnited
Churchhasbeenblessedthisyear.Itseemslikeeachchallenge(andtherewerea
few,ofthatinamoment),broughtinitswakemanyhandswillingtoworkhard,and
greatmindsofferingcreativity;wehadgoodfortuneandhappycollaborationthat
allowedustomoveforward.
2016/17wasabigyearatForestHill,nottheleastforRev.Ali.Firstshewason
sabbatical,travelinginthegreatCanadianNorthandthenshesnuckofftoget
married.Asalways,wearegratefulforherleadershipandherministry.Wehadto
saygoodbyetoDeborahParkandwegottowelcomeAlexGood.Welostthe
partnershipwiththeYMCAandwhilewearestilllookingforanewcontributing
partner,wehavebeenusingourbuildinginamazingwaystosupportinitiativesin
thecommunity.Pleasehelpusidentifypossiblenewusersofourspacesothatwe
canmeetthebudgetchallengesoftheyearahead;andkeepthecommunitygroups
whoareusingourspacenowinyourthoughtsandprayers.Wealsoexperienced
sometransformationalchangeaswewentthroughtheaffirmingprocessandvoted
overwhelminglyinfavourofbecominganAffirmingMinistry.Whatapowerful
signalthatwemeanitwhenwesaythatallarewelcomehere.Threeyoungpeople
wereconfirmedthisyearandhavealreadymadetheirmarksasfutureleaders.
ThankyoutoCoraKrommenhoekforhervolunteerworkwithouryouth.
TheBoardmetseventimesin2016andonetimein2017,andwehadthree
additionalmeetingsoftheExecutiveCommittee.Committeechairsandmembers,
andagoodnumberofvolunteersadditionallyspentcountlesshourslookingafter
everyaspectofcongregationallife.Youknowwhoyouare,thankyou!AsaSunday
Schoolteacher,IhavebeenparticularlygratefulforMargie’scurriculumand
Karen’scoordinationwork.IfyouhavethoughtabouttryingoutSundaySchool
teaching,youmightwanttoknowthatwehaveexcellentsupport.Ialsowantto
thankthemembersoftheExecutiveinparticularforyourkindness,guidanceand
efforts.OurWorshipCommitteesawusthroughthesabbaticalperiodandother
absenceswithoutaglitch.OurTreasurerandFinanceChairbothputupwithmy
relentlesscheerfulnessandoptimismwhileguidingourworldlyaffairs,furrowed
browandall.OurSecretaryandgeneraltechiehasbeensopromptandreliablethat
itmakestheBoardchairpositionabreeze.Anyincomingchairstakeheed;makehis
continuedcommitmentaconditionofyouragreement.

TheBoardhadwonderfulsupportfromRev.JaneJohnsonduringRev.Ali’s
absenceandatourBoardretreat.Wehavebeenworkingongovernancereformto
meettheneedsofourcongregationwhilegrapplingwiththefactthatwearenot
gettinganyyounger(Icallonallphysiciststogetonwithsolvingthisthingcalled
entropy,andsoon).
Aspartofthisyear’sAGM,webringyouaproposalongovernancereform.New
TermsofReference,nowtitledConstitutionandBy-laws,arepartofthisyear’s
meetingpackage.Theywarrantyourcarefulconsideration.Ihavealsobeenreliably
informedthattheymakeagreatsoporific.

WenowhaveanewCommercialAccountManager,AshleyDugay,inSaintJohnNB.
Shehasbeenresponsivetoourquestionsandconcernsregardingcoverageand
limitationsofthepolicy.TheTrusteesreviewedthepolicyforDecember2016
throughtoDecember2017throughtheUnitedChurchofCanada’sHUB
InternationalUCCProtectplan(CommercialInsurancePolicy#HUB1925-1734).
Therewerenosignificantchangestothepolicyfor2016/2017.Thedigitalpiano,
thatwasn’tincludedlastyearduetotheInsurersmistake,iscoveredunderthe
currentcontentslimitofthepolicy.Thetotalpremiumforthisyear’spolicy,aslight
decreasefromlastyear,is$3,917.00.Thepremiumhasbeenremitted.TheDirectors
&OfficersLiabilityInsurancehasbeenprovidedfreeofcostforanotheryear
becauseweareinsuredbyUCCPROTECT.
AconcernhasbeenraisedaboutthecurrentmembershipoftheBoardofTrustees.

AtForestHillUnitedChurch,2016hasbeenayearforustoconsiderwhatitmeans
tobecommunity.Ourminister,theRevAliAnningson,wentonathreemonth
sabbaticalinordertogetsomeperspectiveonthissubject.Onherreturn,she
sharedwithusaconclusionthat“astrongrecognitionandjoyfulcelebrationofthe
divineisthethreadthattiestogetherhealthycommunities.”HerSabbatical

TheWorshipCommitteeatForestHillisthegroupresponsibleforenablingworship

OursenseofcommunitywasenhancedbytheministryofAliceFinnamorewithus
duringAli’sabsence.Duringhertimewithus,fromApril3rdtoJuly17,Alicehelped

Sunday,anintergenerationalservice).SpecialserviceswereheldonMaundy
Thursday,andEastersunrise.TheGoodFridayservicewascancelledbecauseof
inclementweather.TheChristmasEveservicewascelebratedwiththehelpofa
puppetplaydevisedbyMargieRoxboroughandpresentedbytheSeniorSunday
Schoolclass.
After4yearsofprovidingwonderfulmusicforourservices,DeborahParkleftour
congregationandFrederictontofindmoreopportunitiesforhertalentsinOntario.
FortunatelyforForestHill,AlexGoodwasquicklybroughtintoourfellowshipto
providemusicalsupportforourworship.Ashelikesusingthekeyboard,wehave
hadnoneedtoinvestmoremoneyonkeepingthe“sanctuary”piano(theYamaha)
inplayablecondition.AstheWorshipCommitteehadrequestedthatthe
CongregationalBoardmakeadecisiononthefutureofthepianobeforetheendof
2016,suchadecisionisnownotnecessary.Pianosupplywasprovidedonone
occasionbyDianeRobinsonandonthreeoccasionsbyLynda-JeanCoffin,whois
newtoourarea.
Asmentionedabove,pulpitsupplywasprovidedbyAliceFinnamorefromApril3rd
toJuly17th.LibbyCassidywiththesupportoftheAffirmWorkingGroupledin
worshiponMay29andOctober16.ElizabethSavoiewasourworshipleaderon
November13and20.An“emergency”servicehasbeenpreparedandplacedin
DonovanAbbottlibrary,incaseforsomeunforeseenreasonthereisnoworship
leader.
Inthespring,theChairoftheCongregationalBoardaskedeachcommitteeto
provideacalendarofalltheactivitiesgeneratedbythatcommitteeand,
unsurprisingly,theWorshipCommittee’stasksfilled2pages!Thecurrentmembers

TheFHUCChoircontributedtotheweeklyworshipattheFHUCthroughout2016.
DeborahParkwasthemusicdirectoruntiltheendofJunewhenshelefttomoveto
Ontariowithherfamily.TheFHUCchoirwassadtoseeherleaveasshehad
providedgreatmusicalleadershiptothechoirandthecongregation.Welosta
regularchoirmember,MargieRogers(soprano),whoalsomovedtoOntariotobe

COMMENTSONATTENDANCEATWORSHIPSERVICESIN2016
Thegraphsofattendanceprovideforcomparisonbetween2016and2015.The
trendissimilartothoseofpreviousyears,withadip,butstillsignificantnumbers
throughthesummerperiod,andhighernumbersduringtheFall.Easterwasa
pleasantsurpriseasithadthebestSundayattendancefortheyear.Ithasgenerally
beenadayofrelativelylowattendance.Overallattendancewasslightlybetterin
2016thanin2015.TherewerenoSundayWorshipServicescancelledonaccountof
stormsin2016,butastormonGoodFridaycausedcancellationofthatspecial
Service.Attendanceatservicesonotherspecialoccasionsin2016were:Maundy
Thursday,23,EasterSunrise,13,AdventFestival,40,andChristmasEve90.
TheaverageusedbytheUnitedChurchforstatisticalpurposesisthatforthe

Westillhavemuchtodoinmaintainingthelibraryandmakingitmoreusablefor
thecongregation.AdditionallytheNurseryisinneedofanoverhaulsothatitwillbe
easiertokeeptidyandwillagainfocusontheneedsofpre-schoolchildrenandtheir
caregivers.AlthoughwehavediscussedaYouthGroup,thenumbersinthechurchof
thatagearegettingsmallerasouroldermembersarefinishingHighSchooland
movingontoUniversity.
IagreedtoheaduptheCDCommitteeforoneyearasthereweresomanynewfaces
aroundthetable.However,asoftheAnnualMeetinginFebruary,mytermwillend
eitherwiththenewBoardStructureorwiththeelectionofanewCDChair.

OurSundaySchooliscontinuingtooperateusingaRotationalModel.Thisinvolves
havingaparticularBiblicalthemeexploredusingvariousactivitiesduringaunitof
threetofiveweeks.Thestudentsarestilldividedintoajuniorandseniorclass.The
groupsstarttogetherandgenerallyseparateforthemainactivitybutsometimes
stayasonelargeclassfortheentirelesson.Therecontinuestobeacoregroupof
participantswiththeattendanceofothersvaryingfromweektoweek,especiallyin
thejuniorclass.
IremainintheroleofSundaySchoolcoordinatorandarrangeteachersand
resourcesforeachlesson.MargieRoxboroughcontinuestodevelopour

FirstandforemostIwouldliketothankthemembersofmycommitteefortheir
serviceoverthepastyearandforsteppinguptocoverformeduringmytimeof
bereavementinthespring.Theyhavealldemonstratedtheirconcernforall
membersofourchurchfamily.Ourmembersandothersinthecongregation
continuetoprovideforcoffeetimeafterserviceonSundays.Weseethistimeof
fellowshipasanimportantpartofourcongregationallifeandmanypeopledostay

NewYeartogooverthecurrentlistsandmakeanyadjustmentsthatarenecessary.
WeregretthatwehavelostLetaClaydenfromourcommitteethisyeardueto
healthconcernsaftermanyyearsofservice.Wecontinuetoaskforthe
congregation’shelpinalertingustosituationswithchurchfamiliesthatmayrequire
avisitoraphonecall;thismayincludejoyouseventsforcelebrationorsadtimesof
illness,lonelinessorgrievingwherewecanbeapresenceorofferourassistance.

Manse: Iampleasedtoreportthatsomemajor,muchneeded
renovationstotheMansebathroomweresuccessfullycompletedduringAli's
sabbatical.Interiorwallsaroundthetubwerereplaced,newinsulationwasadded,
re-tiledwallswerepainted,anewbathtubandfixtureswereinstalled,inadditionto
anewwindowandanupgradedceilingfan.RobertChristiesecuredacarpenterfor
thejobandoversawtheprojectanddonatedseveralhourspaintingthebathroom,
livinganddiningrooms.WethankyouRobert.DuringthistimeIcontactedAirTech

Manse.Barringanyunforeseenexpensesorproblems,theManseshouldbeingood
repairpresently.
ChurchBuilding: Havingalocalcompanymonitoringtheinteriorsurveillance
systemmentionedinthe2015AnnualReportseemstobeworkingverywell.Copies
ofreportsfromannualinspectionoffirealarm,emergencylighting,portablefire
extinguishersdoneinAprilareavailableshouldanyonewishtoseethem.Nowthat
theManseisingoodrepair,thePropertyCommitteehadhopedthatin2017we
couldfocusonsomeimprovementsandpaintingintheChurchBuilding
(particularlythekitchen)butseriousbudgetconstraintsmaylimitwhatcanbe
accomplished.Wedoneedtotrytokeepthebuildinginrepairtothebestofour

TheUnitedChurchWomenofForestHillmetatthechurchorinamember’shome
onsixoccasionsduring2016.Ouraveragemonthlyattendancewas8ladies.Every

evenings;inJunewewenttoWoolastoqWharfrestaurantinnorthsideFredericton

enjoyedthefellowshipofasharedmeal.

hall.WealsomadesoupfortheCommunityKitchenfollowingtheRoastBeefsupper
inMayandmoresoupwasdeliveredtotheKitchenfollowingtheAdventFestival
whenwehadprovidedsoupfromthefallturkeysupper.
WeparticipatedintheWorldDayofPrayerserviceinMarchheldthisyearatSt.
Margaret’sAnglicanChurch.JenniferAbbottandPatriciaPowellcontinueto
representourgroupattheregularmeetingoftheWomen’sInterchurchCouncil.In
conjunctionwiththeWICCwecontinuetosavefortheFellowshipoftheLeastCoin
andoursavingsaretakentotheWICCtreasurerattheannualmeetingeachfall.On
April25,severalladiesattendedtheSpringRallyoftheUCWsinWoolastook
PresbyteryheldatNashwaaksisUnited,atwhichtimewegavetheopening
devotions.

supperandpreparedthesoupfortheAdventFestival.Wealsomademustardand

setsoutvariouspotentialusesthatareconsistentwithcurrentzoninganddiscusses
theirfitwiththeevolvingmunicipalMasterPlan.Inadditiontoassistingthe
committeeinthinkingthroughoptions3and4,itopeneduponenewoption,not
previouslyconsideredbythecommitteeortheCongregation.Thepropertyislarge
enoughbothinstreetfrontageandinareatobesubdivided.TheCommittee
recommendsthisoptiontothecongregation.Wearecurrentlyexploringpotential
partnersforabuildingprojectonasubdividedarea.Theadvantageofproceedingin
thiswaywouldbethattheresponsibilityfortheprojectmaybesharedwithor
takenonbyapartner.Thiswouldlimitthecontributionstotheplanningand
operationsaspectsoftheprojectthatwewouldhavetomake.Somemodifications
oftheexistinglayoutofhowweusethelandwouldberequiredtoaccommodate
subdivision.Inparticular,theparkinglotwouldhavetobemoved/altered.The

Fisher,JoanMitchellandMargieRoxborough.Thepurposeofthecommitteeisto

assistrefugeestoemigratetoFrederictonthroughsponsorshipofindividual
families.
ThisyearwewereveryhappytowelcometheRamadanfamilytoFrederictonin
July.Thisfamily,consistingofafather,motherandtwoboys(aged14and3upon
arrival),hadbeenlivinginLebanonforthreeyearsafterfleeingtheviolencein
Syria.AllfourmembersareprogressingwiththeirEnglish-languagetrainingand
areadjustingtolifeinCanada.Thecommitteewillcontinuetobefinancially
responsibleforthisfamilyuntilJuly2017.
Wehavethreefamilieswhoseapplicationsarestillinprogress.Twoofthesehave
familymembersinCanadawhowillbetakingmuchoftheresponsibilityforthem
buttheInterchurchRefugeeCommitteehasfacilitatedtheapplicationprocess.Both
ofthesefamiliesarerefugeesfromdifferentlocationsinAfricaandhavebeen
waitingforyearstoemigrate.ThethirdfamilyisSyrianandthecommitteewillbe
fullyresponsibleforthem.TheirapplicationwassubmittedinlateDecember2015,
withindaysoftheRamadanfamily’sapplication.Allthreefamilieshavepassed
theirmedicalscreeningsandtheirinitialsecurityscreenings.However,thereisnow
anadditionalsecurityscreeningthatinvolvesobtainingrecordsdirectlyfromtheir
originalbirthplace/placeofresidenceintheirhomecountry.Asyoumightimagine,
thisisproblematicformanyrefugees.Forexample,thevillageinwhichourSyrian
familylivedhasbeenflattenedbybombing,soallwrittenrecordsaregone.Doreen
KissickandElaineKenyonhavemetwithsomeonefromMattDeCourcey’sofficeto
trytoaddressthisissue.Theywereveryhelpfulanditisthroughthemthatwe
foundoutwhattheholdupswere.However,thereisapparentlynothingwecando
tospeedtheprocessalong.Itisagovernment-to-governmentrequest.
Therearealwaysmorerefugeeswhowishtoemigratethantherearesponsors.If
youareinterestedinhelpingtosupportthiswork,pleasemakedonationsthrough
ForestHill(wecannotgivetaxreceipts)withanindicationthatthemoneyshouldgo
totheInterchurchRefugeeCommittee.
Mostimportantly,wewouldliketoextendourthankstoallofthepeoplewhohave
helpedusovertheyears,particularlywithfundinganddonationsoffurniture,etc.

Themembersofthefinancecommitteefor2016were:MaryGrant(Treasurer),
WilliamHughes(chair),andDianeRobinson.
Wehadprojectedadeficitof$9,671.However,intheendwehadadeficitofabout
$5,000inspiteofashortfallof$4,000becausetheYMCAisnolongerusingthe

building.Themajorreasonforthiswasthatdonationsweremorethan$8000above
forecasts.Congregationalfundraiserscontinuetodecline,pullinginanetof$5,102
ContributionstotheMissionandServicefundwere$15,092upfromlastyear,and
morethan$1,500overbudget.Outreachdonationswere$7,045(morethan$2,000
overbudget)andsupplementedbyabout$600fromcoffeesales.Foodbank
donationsof$3,864were$1,000morethanexpected.Ourchurchgave$9,385tothe
InterchurchRefugeeCommittee.Thisincludes$6,500inmatchingfunds.
Wecurrentlyhave14Householdsusingpreauthorizedremittance(PAR).We
encouragememberstoconsiderthismethodofgiving.Thefactthatthesupportwe
getthroughPARiscontinuousmakesitmucheasiertoplanandreducesmonthly
fluctuations.AnyonewhowouldliketogetmoreinformationaboutPARshould
speaktoWilliamorMary.YoushouldalsospeaktoWilliamorMaryifyouneed
envelopessoyoucanreceiveayear-endtaxreceipt.
In2016thetellerswereRobertChristie,LornaMcKnight,MayHouston,Jennifer
Abbot,JoanMitchell,BobFisher,DianeRobinson,Mary-AnneBlakney,William
HughesandJeanFisherOurtellersdotheweeklycountingandrecordingofthe
Sundayofferings.Thankstoallforaverynecessaryjob.Onbehalfofthecommittee,
theboard,andthecongregation,Iwouldliketoextendspecialthankstoour
Treasurer,MaryGrant,forherhardandcompetentworkonthechurchFinances
including,butcertainlynotlimitedto,preparationoftheannualbudget.
Nextyearweforecastadeficitofabout$7,000.Therewereabout$5,000incosts
relatedtoAli'ssabbaticalin2016whichwedonothavein2017.However,the
YMCAisnolongerusingthebuilding,whichwillmeanareductionof$10,000inuse
ofbuildingincome.Aswell,Ali'ssalaryisincreasingbyabout$3,500.Thus,evenif
donationsremainatlastyear'slevel--our(perhapsconservative)forecastisasmall
decrease--wearestillinadeficitposition.
