INTRODUCTION
A regional study of published
in the territory west of Matheson, Ont
airborne geophysical data
. resulted in the
discernment of several loccilities which were considered to offer
above-average chances for gold occurrences. One of these in Egan
Township, here identified cis Egan West , was subsequently acquired
through staking for a more detailed examination of its potential
on the ground.
Recently completed geophysical surveys constitute the
first investigations carried out to this end. The obtained
results are presented herein and form

DETAILS OF THE SURVEY
A grid was cut with chained pickets at every 25 m on
lines spaced every 100 and oriented true north-south. The base
line 0+00 coincides with the centre-line of Concession III.
Tie-lines 4+OOS and 12+OON bound the southern and northern limits
of the grid area.
Both electromagnetic and magnetic surveys were completed
over the grid measuring at each station the secondary field of a
primary V.L.F. (radio) transmission and the total terrestrial
magnetic field. The V.L.F. survey was effected using a Geonics
EM-16 receiver tuned to NAA broadcasting at 24.0 kHz from Cutler,
Maine. Both the in-phase and quadrature components of the
secondary (vertical) field were measured with a sensitivity of
± '\1o o f the primary (horizontal) field.
The magnetic survey was carried out using a Geometrics
G-856 proton precession magnetometer with a 1 nT sensitivity.
This survey was conducted in conjunction with a self-recording
base station magnetometer set up in the area to record
geomagnetic diurnals which were later used to correct the
observed data. As a result, the final posted magnetic data are
estimated to be accurate to within 3 nT.
For both these surveys, readings were taken every 12.5 m
along the grid lines. The field work itself, including the grid
preparation, was carried out in the period February - April 1987,

A considerable relief has been recorded in this grid area
over 1750 nTs. The main activity occupies all of the
parts, and thus dominates the data set (Dwg. No. 212-9A).
of it is ascribed to an embayment into an intrusive
granodiorite or near-equivalent. It is noticeable
that no consistent grain exists within either domain, and
strike continuities pertain.
The one exception to this standard are the sub-parallel
lineaments bearing N-S. These belong to the Matachewan diabase
dyke swarm, and it is evident that a number of these dykes are

in the area. They cut across all magnetic domains and
both as highs and lows, over extended strike lengths in
direction. As a consequence they distort the data and
recognition of underlying feature difficult, at least in
The south of the area is a relatively quiet, low level
sector magnetically. It signifies the granodiorite mass itself.
The embayment to the north presumably represents portions of the
metavolcanic succession of the region. An intrusive contact thus
lies in between. Pinning this down is not a precise exercise
unfortunately within the context of the magnetics alone; however
the projection made (Dwg. No. EIC-1854) is considered adequate as

a first approximation. It has been guided to some extent by the
aeromagnetics (Map #70850, Timmins, in the GSC 1" ^ 4 mile
compilation series), especially along the grid west side where
ambiguity reigns in the present coverage results. In fact, it is
possible the embayment so-called is in reality not an embayment
at all, but a roof pendant.
A number of cross-structures are suggested by the data,
exclusive of the dykes. The most persuasive bears NE to NW, but
the problem is that the magnetic patterns of the area are so
broken up overall that almost anything is possible. The search
for a marker horizon is compounded by the proximity of the
intrusive contact; nevertheless it is perceived there are the
makings of such a one (marked Ml) in the grid north quarter, a
possibility which is at least worth considering. As shown, it is
quite convoluted and implies the presence of folding as much as
it does faulting, but unfortunately it is never sufficiently free
of the dykes to be sure of its indications.
B. V.L.F. (radio) em.
A variety of V.L.F. response has been obtained in the
area. Some of it, as has been seen on neighbouring properties,
is due to drainages cutting into a conductive clay layer in the
overburden, -- and because of that same layer some sectors of the
grid have provided no response at all (Dwg. No.212-10A), but
happily there are anomalies in other places which can be
attributed to bedrock. The latter, not unnaturally, tend to
group.
BXGALIBUR INTERNATIONAL CONSULTANTS LTD.
l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l
- 8 -
One of the most interesting groups occurs in the centre
north, circa 800N/900E. Up to three parallel V.L.F. axes bearing
E-W have been defined in strength in less than 100 m. They
purport a well developed shear zone, and the magnetics provide
considerable on-strike support for it. Other strong responses
have been obtained in the property south of the granodiorite, and
although not as well-knit, they reflect further shearing and
fracturing, together with some interceding faulting there.
Similiar activity begins to appear in the far north where the
granodiorite is projected to fringe the area. Thus it seems that
in general, overburden thins over the granodiorite, and
conversely thickens and becomes more clay-rich over the
volcanics. Exceptions to this rule either follow the creeks, or
belong to the first-named group of V.L.F. axes which now emerge
as rather extraordinary for the area.
This particular cluster actually provides a focus for
exploration. Not only is the implied shearing important but so
is the indirect evidence that bedrock shallows here and thus may
be silicified. A magnetic low, albeit of no great size but
correlative, centres on it, and hints at local magnetite
depletion. In addition there are indications of NW and NE
cross-faulting in the vicinity. Plainly this locality merits a
closer examination.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It is concluded, by reason of the completed geophysics on
this property, that a prospective locality has been discerned.
This is the premier outcome to date..
In what appears to be an embayment in a granodiorite
stock, or perhaps a roof pendant thereto, a shear system in
volcanics has been found to thread an environment of potentially
silicified and otherwise locally altered rocks (magnetite
depletion). These circumstances favour gold occurrence, assuming
its deposition here to have been chiefly brought about by a
late-stage hydrothermal action. The only ingredient missing in
this case is any evidence of sulphides, but this is believed
rather more a consequence of method insensitivty than a measure
of the actuality.
It is recommended therefore that an IP/resistivity
cross-sectioning be undertaken to specifically search for
sulphides in this locality and its surrounds. These sulphides
typically will be pyritic and disseminated. Because of a
variable clay layer in the overburden, it is further recommended
that the search be carried out by gradient array IP. For this a
measuring interval of 25 m with a 25 m dipole is advocated. Any
polarization anomaly obtained in this context would almost

certainly constitute an immediate drill target, and provide an
impetus for further exploration ^^ironmentally.
