The Series: Ball State and Buffalo will be meeting for the ninth time in a series which dates back to the 1969 season . . . • Ball State’s game vs. the South Florida Bulls, which entered the game ranked 22nd in the nation in the USA Today Poll, marked its first game against a nationally ranked team since Nov. 4, 2006, when the Cardinals suffered a 34-26 loss at Michigan . . . The Wolverines had entered that game ranked No. 2 in the nation by AP and USA Today.

• Ball State opened the 2011 season by playing its first two games in stadiums that host Na-tional Football League teams . . . The Cardinals opened the year with a 27-20 win over Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts . . . Wenning’s Winning Ways: Keith Wenning, who completed a career high 23 passes and rushed for a career best 61 yards in Ball State’s 27-20 victory over Indiana, has started the last 12 games for the Cardinals . . . . Wenning started the final 10 games of the 2010 season as a true freshman after appearing in Ball State’s first two games in relief . . . Wenning threw a career best three touchdown passes vs. Akron in 2010, including a career long 63-yard pass to Jack Tomlinson (Westerville, Ohio/South H.S.) that went for a touch-down . . . Wenning tallied a career high 39 pass attempts for a career high 224 yards at Toledo in 2010 . . . He also threw for 217 yards vs. Akron and 200 yards at Kent State last season.

Baker is Ball State’s All-Time Interceptions Leader: Sean Baker, who led the Cardinals with 9.5 tackles at South Florida, intercepted two passes and returned a fumble for a touchdown in Ball State’s 20-3 win at Buffalo in 2010 . . . Baker became Ball State’s career in-terceptions leader with his 15th and 16th picks at Buffalo . . . Only a junior in 2010, Baker passed Mike Lecklider (1973-76) and Shafer Suggs (1972-75), who shared the school standard with 14 apiece . . . He has four multiple interception games in his career, including vs. Liberty and at Buffalo in 2010 . . . Baker tied for first in the MAC and tied for fifth in the NCAA in interceptions last year. Baker More than Just Interceptions: Sean Baker, was third on the team with eight tackles in the season opener vs. Indiana, forced the fifth fumble of his career and recovered his third career fumble at Buffalo last season . . . He returned the recovered fumble 26 yards for a touchdown, marking the second time in his career he has accomplished the feat . . . His fumble return for a touchdown at Buffalo in 2010 was the second of his career and he became the first player in Ball State history to return two fumbles for TDs in a career.

Offensive Line Returns Experience: Seven offensive linemen with a combined 98 career starts return to the 2011 squad . . . Kreg Hunter (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon H.S.) is the veteran among the returning lineman with 22 starts in his career . . . Hunter started four games as a freshman in 2008, all 12 games at center in 2009, five games in 2010 and two contests in 2011 . . . Freshman Running Back Starts Career: Jahwan Edwards (Matthews, N.C./Butler H.S.), a true freshman running back, began his Ball State career with a four yard rush in the second quarter of the Cardinals season opener vs. Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium in India-napolis, Ind. . . . In addition to gaining a career high 84 yards on a career best 16 rushes vs. Indiana, Edwards tallied his first career reception for 11 yards . . . In his second collegiate contest, Edwards rushed for 41 yards and one touchdown on seven carries vs. the nation’s 22nd-ranked South Florida Bulls . . . The TD at USF was the first of his career.

Kick Starting a Career: Steven Schott (Massillon, Ohio/Washington H.S.), a junior placekicker for the Cardinals who had only two attempts in his first two seasons, kicked a career long 38-yard field goal with 9:25 left in the third quarter of Ball State’s season opening 27-20 win over Indiana, which tied the game at 17-17 . . . Schott then nailed a 22-yard field goal with 2:16 left in the game to give the Car-dinals a 27-17 lead and secure the victory . . . In his first two seasons, Schott was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts . . . He primarily handled kickoff duties for the Cardinals in 2010 . . . Schott has made 3-of-4 field goals in his career and 4-of-4 extra points in his three seasons.

Punter U. Continues: Scott Kovanda (Hartland, Mich./Detroit Central Catholic H.S.) has punted 11 times for 468 yards and a 42.5 average in two games this season . . . He ranks 26th in the country and fourth in the MAC in punting this season . . . In addition, Kovanda helped the Cardinals to limit Indiana to one punt return for a negative one yard in the season opener and South Florida to a negative five yards on three punt returns . . . Ball State ranks 24th in the nation in net punting this season . . . Kovanda managed a season long 57-yard punt vs. Indiana . . . He punted 64 times for 2,557 yards in 2010 . . . He tied his career long with a 63-yard punt vs. Eastern Michigan, a feat he also accomplished vs. North Texas in 2009 . . . Senior Captain Leads Receivers: Briggs Orsbon (Convoy, Ohio/Crestview H.S.), a senior in 2011, had five catches for 40 yards in the season opener vs. Indiana . . . Orsbon was second for the Cardinals with 28 catches in 2010 . . . He tallied his first receiving TD of the 2010 season with 34 seconds left in regulation vs. Eastern Michigan to force the game into overtime . . . Orsbon tallied 13 catches for 141 yards vs. Buffalo in the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championship Game . . . Both totals were career highs and set MAC Championship Game records . . . He blocked the first punt of his career with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter of Ball State’s season opener vs. Southeast Missouri State last season.

Ball State’s rally began with 2:24 left in the third quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Neu to receiver Brian Oliver. A Tony Nibbs’ two-point conversion run made the score 30-11 and that was all the scoring in the third stanza. BSU started its fourth-quarter scoring with a Neu to Oliver 98-yard TD pass with 11:02 left in the game. The Matt Swart extra point kick was good and closed the gap to 30-18. With 2:40 left in the contest, Neu completed a 15-yard scoring strike to receiver Kyle Robinson. Followed by Swart’s extra point kick, the Cardinals were down 30-24. Ball State’s final score came on a Neu to Erin McCray 6-yard pass as time expired in the game. Swart’s extra point kick with no time left on the clock gave the Cardinals a 31-30 win.
