Booklets

• We will now be making small booklets. Once the booklets are made, we need to complete the work below on the following pages:– Page 1: Grade 7 Science – Semester One (Heading)– Page 2 & 3: Tell me some things about yourself. Do you have any

brothers/sisters, favourite movie, favourite sport, what you find annoying etc.

– Page 4 & 5: Tell me what you enjoyed and did not enjoy about Grade 6 Science.

– Page 6 & 7: What would you like to do/learn about in Grade 7 Science

– Page 8: What are you going to try harder to do in Science this year?

How do we get energy?

• Get into Groups of 4.• There are 3 main types of energy found in our

food. As a group, discuss what you think they are.

• Try and include 2 examples of each (one healthy/one unhealthy) for the 3 main food types

Why we need food?

• Your body needs food for different reasons. They are:– For energy– For growth and repair– To stay healthy

• Food can be broken down into three main types. They are: protein, carbohydrates and fats/lipids

Page 6: Food Glorious Food!

Proteins

• Proteins are needed for growth and repair of cells.

• Proteins are made up of amino acids which are broken down in digestion.

• The broken down amino acids then can be made into specific amino acids the body needs.

Carbohydrates

• Carbohydrates are used for your immediate energy needs.

• There are different types of carbohydrates such as sucrose, lactose, glucose and fructose.

• Glucose, starch and glycogen are larger sugar molecules that can be made into smaller sugar molecules.

Page 8: Food Glorious Food!

Fats

• Fats are used to store energy and to keep you warm.

• Some fats are bad for you (picture above), but some fats are VERY good for you (below).

• Good fats can be found in olive oil and avocado.

Measuring Energy

• Energy in measured in Joules.

• Food is normally measured in kJ (or X1000 joules).

• Different people require different amounts of energy, along with different amounts of nutrients

Energy drinks may taste good – but they are normally not good

for you!

Page 10: Food Glorious Food!

Vitamins & Minerals

• You need small, regular amounts of vitamins and minerals to stay healthy.

• Examples include Vitamin A, B1, C, D, iron, calcium & iodine

Page 11: Food Glorious Food!

Energy from Different Foods

• Different foods provide different amounts of energy. For example:– 1 gram of pure carbohydrates = 16 kj– 1 gram of pure protein = 16 kj– 1 gram of pure fat/lipids = 32 kj

Working Out Amounts of Energy

• Often, Nutrition Labels show us information in 100 grams. However – we don’t normally eat exactly 100 grams of a specific food (100 grams of oil anyone??)

• So – how can we work out how much food there is if we eat 50 or 200 grams??

Page 13: Food Glorious Food!

An Example

• Food 1.• Carbs = 20 grams per 100 grams• Fat = 6 grams per 100 grams• Protein = 12 grams per 100 grams.• How much energy is released if I eat 200

grams?• Which energy type will provide us with the

most energy on this occasion?

Our Activity

• OK GOOGLE DRIVE LOVERS!! We are now going to use our laptops (yay – not!!).

• Open up a new google spreadsheet.• Label it (YourName)Food and share it with me!• Copy and paste the information from my

google spreadsheet (it’s been shared with you)

• We will also make a second page for practice (look at my doc)

Page 15: Food Glorious Food!

Continued

• Choose 6 different foods that students want to eat! Write them down onto the practice page

• Then search “Food Name” Nutrition Facts on Google Images for the amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates found in grams for each food.

• Listen for further instructions…….
