Food First Advice Leafletfor Community Setting

A guide to eating well if you have a small appetite for clients in a community setting or on a community caseload

If you are eating less or have lost weight without planning to, simple changes to your meals and snacks may make a difference. You may be recommended foods that you would think are unhealthy. This is the recommended diet until your appetite improves.

Why do you need to eat well?

• Ifyouhaveapoorappetite,youmayhavelostweightorbeatrisk of losing weight

• Eatingtoolittlemayalsoaffectyourenergylevels

• Lackofprotein,mineralsandvitaminsmaymakeyoumoreproneto illness or delay the healing process

• Itisimportantthatyoueatabalanceddiettoprovideallthenecessary nutrients. These can be provided by simple meals and snacks.

• Aimfor3smallmealsand2to3snacksadayifyourappetiteispoor

• Takedrinksafteryourmeal,notbeforeorduringasthiscanfillyouup

• Drinks,snacksandmealscanbefortifiedtomakethemmorenutritious

• Smokingcanreduceyourappetite-trytocutdownorstopsmoking

• Eatingbreakfastmayhelpyoueatbetterfortherestoftheday

• Addvarietytoyourdietwhereverpossibletomakemealsmoreinteresting

• Conveniencefoodscanbeusefulifyoufindcookingdifficultortiring.

PROTEIN FOODS

• Aimtohave2portionsofproteinadayandchoosefromthefollowingfoods:

Meat, chicken and fish

• Includeatleast75-100g(3-4oz)ofmeat,chickenorfishifyouhaveacookedmeal

• Tryconveniencefoodssuchaslasagne,fishinsauce or shepherd’s pie

• Forasnackmealincludesmallerportionsofmeatorfishinasandwichorontoaste.g.tinnedmackerel on toast or chicken sandwich.

Cheese and Eggs

• Gratedcheesecanbeaddedintoscrambledeggs, mashed potatoes, sprinkled onto a bowl of soup or beans on toast

• Forasnackmealtrycheeseontoastor cheeseoreggsandwiches.(1oz(30g)cheese or1-2eggs)

• Haveacheeseoreggmealsuchasmacaronicheese,scrambledeggs,cauliflowercheeseoran omelette

• Trymakingacheesesaucetoputwithvegetables,fishorpasta.

Beans and Lentils

• Chooselentilorbeansoups,oraddtinnedbeans such as butter beans or kidney beans to casseroles or soups.

Nuts

• Snackonplain,salted,dry-roastedorchocolatecovered nuts

• Addtofoodssuchascasseroles,saladsordesserts.

DAIRY FOODS

• Aimforatleast1pint(568ml)ofmilkperdayoratleast3portionsofdairyfoods.

1 portion is: 200ml(1/3pint)milk150g(mediumpot)ofyoghurt30g(1oz)cheese200g(1/2can)ofmilkypudding

• Usewholemilkifyouarelosingweight,oraimfor2-3portionseachday

• Avoidlowfat,sugarfreeyoghurts.Choosethickand creamy varieties

• Includeamilk-baseddessertatmealse.g.custard, milk jelly, yoghurt, fruit fools and mousses.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

• Fruitandvegetablesprovidevitaminsandminerals. Include small helpings with meals but don’tfillupontheseastheyarelowinproteinand calories

• Frozenortinnedfruitandvegetablesarejustasnutritious as fresh

• AimforatleastoneglassofpurefruitjuiceorsquashfortifiedwithvitaminCaday.

CARBOHYDRATE

• Carbohydratesarestarchyfoodse.g.potatoes,breakfast cereal, rice, pasta and bread. These are important as they provide fuel for the body and essential vitamins and minerals

• Wholegrainvarietiesprovidefibreandhelptopreventconstipationbutmaybefillingsoavoidifappetite is small

• Haveatleastoneportionateverymeal:oneserving is approximately 1 slice of bread, ½ cup ofrice,½cupofpasta,2eggsizedpotatoesora small bowl of cereal.

Fortifying your foods to increase calories

Caloriescomefromproteinfoods,fatsandoils,starchyfoods(bread, potatoes,pasta,riceandbreakfastcereals)andsugar.Toincrease yourcalorieintakemakesureyoudothefollowing:

• Addlotsofbutterormargarinetoyourfoodse.g.

- Mashintopotatoesormeltontopofvegetables

- Stirintohotpastaandservewithmeatorcheesesauce

- Donotuse“light”orlowfatspread

• Fryingfoodscanaddextracalories

- Roastpotatoesandchipsarehighincaloriesandareausefulsourceofenergy

• Usemayonnaise,saladcreamanddressingsgenerously

• Choosewholemilkinsteadofskimmedorsemi-skimmedmilk

• Addcreamtosoups,sauces,dessertsorporridge

‘Overthecounter’enricheddrinkse.g.ComplanorBuild-Upcanbeusedtoincreasecalorieintake.

Fortified Milk

Fortifymilkbyaddingskimmedmilkpowdere.g.Marvel,orsupermarkets’own brand skimmed milk powder. This increases the protein and calorie content.

Whisk2-4heapedtablespoons(50g/2oz)skimmedmilkpowderinto1pint of whole milk.

Thismilkcanthenbeusedto:

• Makemilkydrinkssuchashotchocolate,coffee,Ovaltine,Horlicks,orcocoa

• Makeporridge

• Pourovercereal

• Makesaucese.g.whiteorcheesesauce

• Milkshakes(tryaddingfreshfruitandicecreamfora“thickshake”)
