Accelerated Reader Florence Melly Primary School are currentlyundertaking an initiative called AcceleratedReader which is a computer program that helpsteachers manage and monitor children’sindependent reading practice. A child picks abook at his/her own level and reads it at his/herown pace.

When finished, the child takes a short quiz onthe computer – passing the quiz shows that thechild has understood what they have read.Since they are reading books at their ownreading and interest levels, most children arelikely to be successful and enjoy the books andquizzes.

You can help at home by encouraging yourchild to read at home, discuss books, askquestions about what they have read and visityour local library.

GoogleExpeditions KS2 children weretaken on a journey tothe far reaches ofEarth and beyond,courtesy of a visitfrom GoogleExpeditions. Usingthe latesttechnology andvirtual reality thechildren had thechance to visit themoon, the North Pole andmuch more. It was a fantastic learningexperience and produced some great writingopportunities.

PobbleThis term, Year 6 have enjoyed being part of thePobble community. Pobble has given the pupilsat Florence Melly the opportunity to publishtheir writing, just like their favourite authors.

Year 6, along with the rest of KS2, have beentaking advantage of this amazing resource bypublishing writing, exploring writing styles andgiving feedback to young writers all over theworld. The children in Year 6 have also receivedlots of positive comments highlighting just howawesome their writing is. Children from acrossthe world are reading our writing for pleasure.Well done Year 6. Liverpool vs. SunderlandNine pupils attended the Liverpool vs.Sunderland match as part of the 'Young FansInitiative' and had the once in a lifetimeopportunity of walking onto the pitch at halftime in front 54,000 people. One of the pupilswas even selected to talk to the crowd - it wasan experience they will never forget.

Show Racism the Red CardTen Florence Melly pupils attended a 'ShowRacism the Red Card' event hosted by LiverpoolFootball Club earlier this term. The childrenattended some valuable workshops run by theAntony Walker foundation, before participatingin a question and answer session with a panelof expertsincludingformer refereeChris FoyalongsidecurrentLiverpool playerDaniel Sturridgeand Sheyi Ojo.

Goodbye and Good LuckAs we come to the end of 2016 we need tosay goodbye and good luck to 2 members ofstaff. Chloe Latta is off to Dubai to pursueanother teaching job. She has been a greatasset to the school and we wish her all thebest in her new role.

Penny Haynes has worked at Florence Mellyfor 20 years in various roles as a SupportWorker and then a Learning Mentor. Pennyhas worked tirelessly for the children andsupported them as they learn and grow. Sheis off to pursue a new adventure in furniturerestoring. Penny said "Florence Melly hasalways been a good school, is currently agood school and will continue to flourish".

Thanks to both of them for their hardworkand dedication.

Christmas ProductionKey Stage 1 took part in the ‘MagicalChristmas Journey’. The childrenenjoyed performing to theschool and to friends andfamily. We hope you tooenjoyed the show.

Tycoons in SchoolsAs some of you may know, our school has beeninvolved in an exciting project: ‘Tycoons inSchools’ – run by Peter Jones CBE, entrepreneurand star of ‘Dragon’s Den’. In year 6 we have had three groups of childrenwho have established their own business ideas:they have developed a business plan and havemanaged their own promotion/advertising, salesand finances. They are currently undergoingtheir evaluation reports.Our young businesspeople: Flo Fresh, Fruit Loopsand The Christmas Emporium have gained manylife-long skills. They have learned that resilience,negotiation and hard work are extremelyimportant in developing a successful partnership.They are aware that running a business is notalways easy and our teams have encounteredsome difficulties along the way. All in all, it has been an innovative and enjoyablefew months. We have brought clean cars, healthysnack options and a little bit of Christmas cheerto our school. Thechildren haveraised over £400,most of whichwill be distributedto variouscharities (CancerResearch, Helpfor Heroes andWoodlandsHospice).

Florence Melly BusinessBiographiesFLO FRESHOur plan is toclean staff carsduring lunch-times for areasonable fee.We have anexpert wheel-washer and thetaller membersof our groupwill be very useful in ensuring that the carrooves are cleaned. We foresee a decent profitwith all of the proceeds being donated tocharities: Cancer research and Help for Heroes.

FRUIT LOOPSOur idea is to sell a range of fruit (not grapes) tochildren in Key stage 2 (as key stage 1 childrenalready get free fruit every day), during morningplaytimes, at a reasonably priced20p. Mr Heaton hasagreed to donatesome fruit to ourbusiness in order toget us up andrunning. We hope togain profit from thisventure which will beshared between ourschool and CancerResearch UK.

THE CHRISTMAS EMPORIUMWe have decided to sell a fantastic range ofhome-made Christmas delights: glitter/snowglobes, reindeer food, Christmas cards, letter toSanta sets and sweet products. We hope to setup stalls, as frequently as possible, in school andwithin the localcommunity. Webelieve that, witha lot of hardwork, we willmake a goodprofit. These willbe equally shared– 50% to charity(WoodlandsHospice) and50% towards a treat for Y6.

Fiddlers FerryHere are some pictures of our trip to FiddlersFerry Power station where the childrendiscovered how we get our electricity, thechanges since Victorian times and built circuits.

A Victorian ChristmasThe pupils dressed up as and either worked inthe house or were invited as guests by the Lordand Lady of the house. They thoroughlyenjoyed going back in time and seeing what lifewas like forVictorianchildren atChristmas.

EYFS – Messy Stay and Play

We were very excited to welcome parentsinto our Reception and Nursery classes inDecember for some Messy Stay and Playsessions.We had a range of activities set up to promotephonics, mathematics, communication,language and speaking. This was a fantasticopportunity for children to learn alongsidetheir parents how playing with textures andsmells can encourage children to experiment.We received the following the feedback fromour parents;

“Thank you so much for such a wonderfulmorning of activity! It was so nice to be ableto share part of the school day, Isabella talkedabout our morning all evening! Loved theMaths dance too!! Think it would be a greatidea to make it a permanent feature!”

“Perfect! Lovely, lovely morning!! Thank youso much. It was so nice to spend one to onetime with Daisy and let her show me whatshe likes to do in class. I ‘loved’ seeing howthe children learn their words and numbersand Daisy was totally thrilled by it all. She saidit was the ‘best day ever’! Please continue this.“Ava and I had so much fun at stay andplay. Ava got to show me everything shedoes in class, as it in nice to knowyour child is a nice friendlyenvironment. Ava loved, loved mecoming in and playing with herand I would definitely love tocome back and do it again.Thank you for a lovelyafternoon”. Ava’s mum.

What is Next for Year 1?In the spring term we will be finding out aboutspace travel. Our big question for this half termis “What is the best material to use to make aspaceship?” We will investigate this throughhistory, science maths and English. We willfind out about the people who have travelledinto space. Can you name any spacetravellers? If you want to start this projectduring the holidays then please do.
