WINGS earned attention from national funders with multi-year grants from the Wallace Foundation and the NoVo Foundation.

The Wallace Foundation grant will support our research efforts while the NoVo Foundation supports our social and emotional learning curriculum. We love this kind of limelight!

Our Soarporate Headquarters added four full-time positions in order to support programmatic and organizational growth:

Director of Engagement, Performance Measurement Analyst, Program Fidelity & Instruction Associate, and Human Resource Coordinator.

“Supersonic CEO” and “Laser-focused Laird” are just a few ways WINGS CEO Bridget Laird has been described. Announced this June, Bridget

was accepted into the Liberty Fellowship’s Class of 2016! The Liberty Fellowship stands as part of the Aspen Institute’s Aspen Global Leadership Network.

Public funding soared through the roof with $2,619,368 received during the 2013–2014 year, an increase of 84% from the

previous year. Wow!

The WINGS Team heightened advocacy efforts by presenting at a variety of national conferences including the Beyond School

Hours: National Education Conference, National Afterschool Association Conference, National Afterschool Association – SEL/Afterschool Forum, Six Second’s EQ Week, After the Leap Conference, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation Conference, and the Mindful Class Management Telesummit.

THE YEAR’S BEST FROM SUZAN ZOUKIS, BOARD CHAIR

towardsgrowth

1st grade: A classmate starts talking to you even though the teacher said “no talking.” You know you could get in trouble, so you ignore him, avoiding a YES MESS.

4th grade:Your friends are bullying the new girl in school. You know that can really hurt her feelings, so you ask her to play with you at recess.

7th grade:Some of the kids in your neighborhood want you to try smoking cigarettes with them. Everyone’s doing it but you know it can make you sick. You just say “Nah, no thanks” and move on with the conversation.

11th grade Your best friend wants you to cut class with her to get high after lunch. You decide to stay on campus because you know something bad can happen if you get caught skipping school and doing drugs.

We have more WINGS alumni now than ever before. Want to know how getting pumped full of WINGS stays with a child?

THE LESSON: Kids learn how to brainstorm alternative actions and predict consequences before choosing the action to take. Kids practice evaluating the level of success in the action chosen.

THE TIP: Avoid a YES MESS by asking 1) Could anyone (including myself ) get hurt? 2) Could I get into trouble if I get caught doing this? 3) Can anything bad happen if I make this choice? If you answered yes to any of these, you are in a YES MESS and need to make a better choice.

SOUTH CAROLINA We replicated our program model in the rural setting of Lake City where we enrolled

90 kids while 10 college students served as WINGSLeaders.

This was our first entrance into a rural school district and we’re so proud to be instantly embraced by faculty, staff, and parents

OVERALL WINGS kids missed an average of

6.38 days/year and NON-WINGS KIDS missed an average of

11.1 days/year. That’s a 43% improvement.

amidactionATLANTA We increased the number of kids served in Metro-Atlanta by 30%:

220 kids at two Fulton County schools participated in the WINGS program this past year.

Regional leadership and support in Atlanta was bulked-up with our new Executive Director Denise Blake.

because oftentimes rural school districts are looked over.

In Charleston, we served more than

400 kids at four elementary schools in Charleston County.

Regional support and leadership was beefed-up with our new Executive Director Eleanor Smythe.

WINGS is an education program that teaches kids how to behave well, make good decisions and build healthy relationships. We do this by weaving a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum into a fresh and fun after school program. Kids get the life lessons they need to succeed and be happy and they get a safe place to call home after school.
