Frederica Lucy [Rica] Erickson née Sandilands AM, D. Litt. Cit. WA (Arts).

Biography

1908 Born August 8 Boulder City to Christopher Sandilands, farmer/ formerly filter-press hand on gold mines and wife Phoebe Louisa Topping née Cooke.

1914 Attended Boulder Primary School.

1915 Spent several months in Albany.

First Prize Nature Drawing (Infants), Eastern Goldfields Art and Industrial Exhibition, Boulder.

1916–7 Lived in Cuballing whilst father was away at the war.

1920 Family moved to De Garis’s Kendenup Estate but Rica stayed behind and lived with her grandmother, the Boulder midwife nurse Frederica Cooke née Wheeler.

1922 Won Scholarship to Eastern Goldfields High School. Joined Girl Guides, became a leader, and commenced studying for her Athletics, Nature Study and Author’s badges.

1923 Junior Certificate — passed English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Physics and Drawing.

1924 Played hockey in Hockey Week Carnival in Perth. Youngest team member.

1925 Leaving Certificate — passed English, Geography, History, Art with distinction and Physics.

Guard of Honour Anzac Day. (As a Girl Guide)

1926 Monitor at Kendenup school, Mt Barker, Dumbleyoung and Teacher on Supply at Gnowangerup and studied for the C Certificate necessary to be accepted to train to teach. Introduced to Emily Pelloe’s book on Western Australian wildflowers.

1927–8 Claremont Teachers’ College, one year Rural Schools Training course. Nature study with Charles Hamilton and Dr Millington. Subjects for B Certificate.

1929 Opened a new one teacher school at Aurora; commenced correspondence with Dr R.S. Rogers of Adelaide, an orchid specialist whom she visited in South Australia in summer holidays of 1931/2 and Edith Coleman of Victoria with whom she stayed at Healesville.

1932 Moved to teach at Young’s Siding. Made orchids the optional subject for her A Certificate. Began to use colour in her drawings of plants. Had private lessons with Brenda Holland in Albany on water-colour techniques. Given an excellent box of Windsor & Newton water-colours as a Christmas present by F.W. Rowe, metallurgist, naturalist and classical scholar.

1934 Transferred to teach at Bolgart in the wheat-belt of Western Australia.

1936 Married farmer Sydney Uden Erickson. Compulsoryretirement from Education Department.

1939 Daughter Dorothy born.

1940 Son John born.

1942 Daughter Bethel born.

1943 Daughter Robin born.

1944–6 Dorothy, and later John, boarded to go to school at Wattening.

1947 Exhibited orchid drawings at the second Wildlife Show put on by the WA Naturalists’ Club in Perth. Persuaded by Dr Dominic Serventy to write a book to go with them.

Correspondence classes for the children on the farm.

21948 Native bee Euryglossia ricae named for Rica by Tarlton Rayment of Victoria.

Wasp Hylaeus dorothae named for Dorothy by Tarlton Rayment.

Dorothy went to boarding school, Methodist Ladies College until 1956. (became teacher, university lecturer, artist-jeweller, historian)

1949 John rode eight miles each way to attend school at Bolgart.

Lysicelletes ricae and Asrophoda ricae named for Rica.

1950 The three younger children went to school at Kendenup and then returned to school at Bolgart when a bus route was established after lobbying by Rica. Rica had time to paint again.

Erickson Orchid [Caladenia ericksoniae] named for Rica by William H. Nicholls of Melbourne

Sericphorus sydneii [the red leg wasp] was named for Syd Erickson.

1951 Orchids of the West published by Paterson Brokensha with financial assistance from Syd Erickson. [This and Trigger Plants became required reading in Botany at the University of Western Australia].

Started the Bolgart Historical Society in 1950s.

1953 John went to Scotch College until 1955.(became farmer)

Syd and Rica were both Open Champions at Bolgart Golf Club

1954 Bethel went to MLC until 1958. (became teacher)

1956 Robin went to MLC (won Entrance Scholarship) to 1960. (became nurse)

Stylidium ericksoniae named for Rica by Jim Willis of Melbourne [now Stylidium pedunculatum var. ericksoniae].

1958 Trigger Plants published by Patterson Brokensha. Became the standard work on the subject.

1958-61 Tour guide for Midland Bus Company Wildflower Tours.

c1960 Commenced saving the Toodyay Goal and setting it up as a museum. She was assisted c 1961-2 by Ray Oldham.

1964 Retired from the farm. Travelled to Europe for six months with Syd, joined Dorothy, visited herbaria etc.

1965 Retired to Nedlands (1 Boronia Avenue).

1968 Plants of Prey published by Lamb Patterson. Research work for this had been done by Dorothy in 1957–58 at Teachers’ College and in England in 1962–64 at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the British Museum of Natural History.

1969 The Drummonds of Hawthornden published by Lamb Patterson.

1971 The Victoria Plains published by Lamb Patterson.

1972–3 Exhibited in the 3rd International Exhibition of Botanical Art, Hunt Institute, Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

1973 Appointed to the committee in charge of restoring Toodyay Gaol Museum.

1974 Flowers and Plants of Western Australia (co-authored) published by Reed Books.

Old Toodyay and Newcastle published by Toodyay Shire.

Her Name is Woman (co-authored with Beatrice Gibbings and Lillian Higgins) published by the CWA.

History of the WA Naturalists’ Club 1924–1974 published by club.

Exhibited in the Botanical Art Exhibition, Canberra Botanic Gardens.
