Thank you for purchasing my Read Aloud Discussion Questions for Fish in a Tree. My students and I really enjoy read-aloud novels that we share as a class. They definitely lead to some wonderful conversations. Sometimes, though, the conversation takes a little while to get moving. That is why I created discussion questions to prompt my students. These questions are NOT meant for students to answer on their own. They are to be discussed in partners, groups or as a whole class. These questions are also NOT meant to be a comprehension check or have a written response. My goal is for them to be thought-provoking and interactive. The questions do not have right or wrong answers. Some of the questions are even repeated, as students may think differently as the novel progresses. Some chapters, you will use all the questions. Some chapters you may only use one question or none at all. Don’t feel as though you need to use every single question. I print the questions right on sticky notes, which then allows me to stick them right at the end of each chapter before I even start reading the novel. Then I am all set! Not sure how to print on post-it notes? Head to the last page (click here) of this resource for directions! You could also easily print the questions out on regular paper instead. Print on cardstock and laminate the cards. Then the questions could be placed on a ring for easy access as you read the novel.
Enjoy! Sara J

The Chapter Stickies have one set of questions for each chapter. I print these out on sticky notes and place them at the end of each chapter in my book.
They could also be printed on cardstock and placed on a key ring for easy access while you are reading the
novel aloud.

The Group Stickies have six sets of questions for each chapter. I print these out on sticky notes or cardstock and hand them out to groups of students at the end
of each chapter.
Each group receives a set of questions. They discuss the questions within their group and then we talk
about all the questions as a whole class.

Directions for printing on sticky notes: 1. To print on the sticky notes, print out only the template page
first (the page with all the boxes). 2. Place sticky notes directly on top of each box. 3. Place it back in the printer. 4. Print only the page with the questions on it. For more visual printing directions, click here. Every printer is different, so you may need to play around with yours first to figure out the best way to print them.
