FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, GREENVILLE, NC
Since we announced the FOLLIES addition to the April
9th Food & Fellowship program, I've heard lots of peo-
ple talk about which of their talents they might show off
- music, dance, gymnastics, jokes, just to name a few.
BUT, we need to finalize all the participants so we can
prepare accordingly. If you or your child (all ages are eligible to participate)
would like to be included in the program, please let me
know by THIS Sunday, MARCH 23! Karrie Rushing, [email protected]

a check on Easter Sunday, payable to FPC and marked “OGHS”.
MUSIC NOTES
On Sunday, March 30 during the
11am service, the Chancel Choir
will present Robert Ray's "Gospel
Mass" for the congregation. Orig-
inally composed for a single per-
formance more than thirty years
ago, Gospel Mass gained imme-
diate popularity and acceptance
in the choral music world.
Though he had little experience
in composition at the time, Ray
held degrees in music and piano
performance from Northwestern
University. Using his training in
classical music, and marrying it
with his experiences growing up
in the African Methodist Episco-
pal church, Ray makes the gospel
style accessible to singers of all
ages and ability levels. Likewise,
he takes the mass setting - most
often heard with Latin text - and
sets it for ease of use in all
denominations.
Just as we work hard to sing Bach
or Beethoven in a style that is his-
torically accurate, the choir has
really stretched over the last cou-
ple of months to sing Gospel Mass
in the gospel style. It's been quite
the adventure to work through to-
gether! I know that this piece will
offer each of you an opportunity to
hear the mass setting again with
new ears - and it's ok if you tap
your toes too!
Though "Gospel Mass" will take
the place of the sermon at the
11am service, Bill Neely will still
preach at 8:30. Come on to both
services on March 30 so you don't
miss a thing!

Preparations are under way and Youth Sunday is coming together nicely. We have had
great turnouts and much enthusiasm from the youth to get ready to lead worship this
Sunday, March 23rd for both services. We will meet in the Sanctuary at 7:45 to re-
hearse our songs and review any questions. This is a special day for us to be able to
share our faith journey with the congregation. No youth group on March 23. This Friday, March 21st, we will have our lock-in from 8:00pm - 8:00am. We will prac-
tice, practice, and practice to be ready and then we will play! Please bring snacks and
drinks to share with the group Friday night. If we get hungry we can order some pizza.
What am I thinking if we get hungry! Sunday morning breakfast will be provided in the
Basement Fellowship Hall in between services. Thank you everyone for your hard
work! We are off to a great start with Relay for Life fundraising. The gift card basket has been
a huge success already. We collected $473.00 this past Sunday and we will be at it
again after Youth Sunday services. Thank you to all who contributed a gift card to
make this happen. Chick-Fil-A had a large crowd and I am looking forward to some
frozen yogurt from Sweet Frog this Sunday. At Sweet Frog from 12:00-10:00 pm,
mention the FPC Youth Relay team and 20% of your purchase will go towards the fight
against cancer. Other notes:
Please let me know if you are interested in attending the mission trip to Chicago or
Montreat Youth Conference. Space is available for both.
If you are entering 10th grade through 12th grade and would like to be a part of the
New Hope Presbytery Youth Council, please see me for an application. These are
due April 14th.
Ultimate Sunday is back on March 30th from 4:00-5:00, followed by youth group.
Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the youth will be on April 13th. More details to come. Thank you everyone for your hard work and dedication by helping others and allowing
me the opportunity to share and grow our faith together! If you have any questions,

PASTOR’S WORD Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are approaching the halfway point on our 2014 Lenten journey. At
the beginning of this journey, we challenged ourselves to spend time every
day with the Lord’s Prayer. This week we are focusing on that petition in
the prayer that asks God to help us build the kingdom here on earth as it exists in heaven.
I don’t know what images are brought to mind for you when you envision the kingdom of God, but
for me it would need to be inclusive. I imagine that there will be people of varying heights, sizes, skin
color, and creeds. Rather than being a soup pot where everything merges into one flavor, I believe it
should be thought of more like the Indian dish, thali (pictured), which keeps the various tastes separate
and unique. This view of heaven is more like what I believe the church should look like, where rather
than blending all of our ideas, beliefs and traditions into one unified whole, each person is held with
respect in their particular traditions and beliefs. God loves us all and accepts our best efforts at living in
community with one another.
Christ asked the question, “How can we say we love God who we have never seen, if we do not
love our brothers and sisters who we have seen?” As we pray this Lent, may God’s kingdom truly
come on earth as it is in heaven.
