First Sunday of Advent
Advent begins on Sunday, November 27. Advent is a season observed by Christian churches as a time of ex-pectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning "coming". We will light the first Advent Candle and celebrate Christ’s coming as we enter the season of preparation for Christmas.
Community Thanksgiving Service
The annual Community Thanksgiving Service will be at First Baptist Church this year. We will gather for worship at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22. This has been an important time for churches in our community to come together as the people of God.
Veterans Day at
Presbyterian College
The Wade family will be at Presbyterian College on November
10 and 11 to celebrate Veterans’ Day. Billy’s father was the Communications Officer for the 388th Bomb Group in England during World War II. Dr. Vernon Williams, Prof. of History at Abilene Christian University, has been working for 13 years on a film project using many of the pictures and re-sources provided by the Wade family.
Clinton, SC, where Presbyterian College is located, is the hometown of Billy’s father and mother. The college will be hosting a dinner and lecture along with a photo exhibit and the showing of the film. An ROTC Veteran’s Day Ceremony will follow.
What It Means to be Presbyterian
The Sunday School class which started on October 23 will not meet on November 6 when many are in Montreat for the con-gregational retreat. The classes then will continue for two more Sundays, November 13 and November 20 on "What It Means to be Presbyterian". The class will meet in the fellow-ship hall at 10:00 a.m. Not only are new members and new elders invited, but anyone who is interested is encouraged to come and join us for any or all of these classes.

Community Food Pantry
You may bring food donations to the church or drop them off at the Community Food Pantry from 9:00-11:30 Wednesday and Friday, except for holidays. Call (770) 784-0037 for directions. Any non-perishable food items are welcome.
For November it is suggested that donations be: cookies, bread and rolls
Witness News Opportunities for holiday giving: Angel trees for the Salvation Army will be put up in the narthex at the end of November. Collections for the Foster/Hudson Bike Ministry are being accepted. The Christmas Joy Dinner will be Sunday, December 11, 2016.
Baby Love
“Baby Love” is a local project of the Witness Team started in the fall of 2014. Baby Love supplies diapers for distribution to families in need through the Salvation Army, Food Pantry and the homeless shelter. Donations of baby diapers can be placed in the cradle located in the narthex. Monetary gifts may be placed in an offering envelope with your name and your offering statement will reflect your donation. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner
For the last 30 years our church members have joined with others in the community to provide dinner on Thanksgiving Day. It is an effort to provide food for those in need as well as an opportunity for people to eat together.
Volunteers will be needed to help prepare and serve the meal on Thanksgiving Day. If you are interested in donating to this event, you may give to the church and designate your gift “for Community Dinner”.

Men’s Bible Study and Breakfast
The Men’s Bible Study this month will be on Saturday morning, November 19, at 8:00 a.m. in the fellowship hall. We will continue a study of “The Church: Living or Dead?” from Dr. Shirley Guthrie’s classic book, Christian Doctrine. Bring your breakfast and bring a friend.

Circle meetings for November are listed below. If you are not currently a member of a circle you are welcome to join one of them for their meeting. Contact the church office if you need a phone number for one of the groups. They do like to know
when to expect a newcomer to their group! The Elizabeth Circle will meet Tuesday, November 1, at 10:00 in the fellowship hall. The Martha Circle will meet on November 1, at 10:30 at the home of Cheryl Meichsner. The Ruth Circle will meet at FPC in the fellowship hall, Tuesday, November 1, at 7:00 in the evening.
Santa Claus Express
Presbyterian Women sponsor FPC efforts to help celebrate the holidays with residents of the health services at Presby-terian Homes of Georgia. We have begun the joyous task of collecting gifts for the resi-dents. The collection box is located in the narthex with fly-
ers listing the items needed and how to package them. The collection deadline is Sunday, Novem-ber 27. Santa’s elves will pick up the gifts from de-pot churches and deliver them to campuses to be wrapped for residents. Santa himself delivers the gifts to residents at Christmas parties. Contribu-tions from our church last year were very generous and greatly appreciated.
Montreat Retreat November 4-6
Thirty-seven of our members will be attending the congre-gational retreat to Montreat,
NC in the mountains near Asheville. Montreat is one of our Presbyterian Church USA confer-ence grounds. Please keep our people in your prayers.
Presbytery Meeting Fayette Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville will host the No-vember Presbytery meeting on Tuesday, November 15. Our representatives will be announced shortly.
Let’s Gather Together Thanksgiving is a joyful time to express gratitude for our many blessings. Instead of a big turkey dinner, let’s gather for brunch after worship in the fellowship hall on November 20. Reservations are always necessary, so please call Peni or sign the form found in the church pew pocket and place it in the offering plate. Donations to cover the cost will be accepted. See you there!!

All Middle and High School Youth are invited to join us for a fun evening of games and dinner around a bonfire at the home of Gavin & Gracie Bates. For details watch the Youth Connection e-news, or call Dan Walden at the church office.

Dear FPC Family, October was a full and exciting month for us at FPELC! We studied community helpers and trans-portation this month, so our Green, Red, and Orange Room friends got to go on a field trip to the Post Of-fice and the Newton County Courthouse to visit Judge Ozburn. The Green Room also visited several businesses around the square to see the ways in which they helped the community. We finished the
last day before our fall break with a visit from the Covington Police, Fire and Emergency Manage-ment Departments. They brought a fire truck, ambulance, and police car to the school and even gave a talk about what it’s like to do their jobs, complete with gear demonstration. The kids loved hearing the sirens! It’s so wonderful that we live in a community that will take time to come and educate chil-dren about what they do and enjoy doing it! We also got to go to the Pumpkin Patch as a school, and had a wonderful Halloween Parade.
In November, we will be learning about Old Testament Stories and, of course, Thanksgiving. The Bi-ble verse for the month is from Psalm 118:1, “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.” We are going to give thanks in many ways this month, as well as delving into some of the most well-known Old Testament stories in the Bible. I believe that having a great foundation in the Bible is just as important as learning ABC’s and 123’s, so I’m particularly excited to see what each class is going to do this month. Please come by and visit the ELC to see for yourself. The Green Room is planning their year-ly field trip to the High Rise to give a Thanksgiving blessing to the residents there.
We are hosting the Scholastic Book Fair November 7-11. The store will be open before and after school: 8:30-9:30 and 12:30-1:30. Scholastic Books will make excellent Christmas presents for friends and family. Last year, the success of our book fair helped us to purchase some furniture for the preschool such as bean bag chairs, a book shelf, and a storage ottoman. Thank you for the prayers and support that you give the ELC!
