Join us for Mid-Week Feast on Wednesday, February 11, at 6:00 pm. We will have spaghetti with your choice of marinara sauce or meat sauce, salad and garlic bread. Please remember to complete your reservation slip and drop it in the offering plate or call or email the church office before Tuesday 2/10/15 at noon.

On Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. Dr. Mark Douglas, Ethics Professor at Columbia Theological Seminary will be leading an event for the whole congrega-tion that in the Martin Fellowship Hall. The topic is: “Personal Faith and Public Life”. We will share a covered dish sup-per before the program and there will be activities for the youth and children.

The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednes-day. On Ash Wednesday we confess who we are and seek God’s mercy for us and this bro-ken and hurting world. We step forward to re-ceive the mark of the cross in ashes on our foreheads. The action is a reminder of our sin-fulness and of our mortality. It is also a re-minder of the forgiveness and hope that arises out of the ashes, through Christ our Lord and savior.

On Wednesday, February 18, we will join with members of First United Methodist Church in

our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. for our Ash Wednesday service. There will be a soup and salad supper before the service, at 6:00 p.m.

Hunger Walk/Run - Sunday, March 15th

Over 150,000 walkers and runners will set off from Turner Field on a 5K course around downtown Atlanta. In doing so they will raise money to alleviate food poverty in Atlan-ta. Our Youth Connection will be participating in this walk again this year, but it is open to all members of First Pres-byterian Church. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall im-mediately after Worship on the 15th and have a quick lunch together as we change into our walking shoes. continued on page 4

Session & Administrative Notes

Worship Bucks

Many of our members use online bill-pay services or pay their entire pledged commitment once each year for con-venience. These approaches help the church leadership and staff to manage the finances of the church throughout the year. However, there is still a great deal of value in the act of placing an offering into the plate during worship as our response to God's gift of grace.

The Session of FPC ("ruling elders") are encouraging all of us to begin placing at least a single dollar bill into the plate as our corporate act of worship, expressing "thanksgiving to God, the giver of life and all goods, the redeemer from sin and evil." (Book of Order W-2.5003)

MAKING CONNECTIONS

Cross Walk A crosswalk is a safe space - a "sanctuary" - for those traveling through life. Help us to cre-ate a "Cross Walk" here at FPC. Bring wall-mountable crosses from your travels so that we can display them on the wall in the hall outside the narthex. Include a note with your name(s) and cross origin information so that we can create a book detailing the cross dis-play for future generations.

Community Food Pantry

The hours of operation for the Food Pantry will be as listed be-low. Bring donations to the church or drop them off at the Community Food Pantry from 9:00-12:00 Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday.

Call (770) 784-0037 for directions.

In February it is suggested that donations be: canned meats or chicken, beef stew, etc. Any non-perishable food items are welcome.

Tax Efficient Charitable Contributions

Consider transferring stock to FPC and realize additional tax savings at the same time. If you own stock in a publically traded company (such as Home Depot, General Mills, Ford, etc.) you may be able to transfer that stock to FPC as payment towards your pledge and realize additional tax savings. If you take itemized de-ductions (as opposed to the standard deduction) when you prepare your tax return, you receive a tax deduc-tion for contributions to FPC. The deduction lowers your taxable income and therefore lowers your tax liabil-ity.

Here is how it works. Let’s assume you’re in the 20% tax bracket, meaning that for every additional dollar of income you earn you pay 20 cents in tax and for every dollar of tax deductions you save 20 cents in tax. So if you write a check to FPC for $1,000, it will reduce your income taxes by $200 (20% of $1,000). Suppose you own Home Depot stock which you bought for $200 and now it’s worth $1,000. You have an unrealized gain of $800. If you sell the stock you will pay $160 of tax on the gain (800 x 20% = $160). However, in-stead of selling the stock, you can give the stock to FPC. If you do that, you receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the stock ($1,000) and never pay tax on the unrealized gain of $800.

In the example above, if you write a check to FPC for $1,000 you receive a tax deduction for that amount and save $200 in taxes. If you donate the stock worth $1,000 to FPC you also receive a tax deduction for $1,000 and save $200 in taxes, but by donating the stock, you never have to pay tax on the unrealized gain of $800. So you avoided another $160 in tax. By donating stock worth $1,000 instead of writing a check for $1,000, you effectively saved $360 in tax ($200 + $160).

The three basic requirements for utilizing a stock donation are: (1) the value of the stock must be more than your cost of the stock, (2) you must have owned the stock for at least one year, and (3) the stock cannot be held in an IRA or other retirement account.

If you would like to donate stock to FPC, please call Peni Haug, the church secretary. If you have questions about the tax aspects of a stock donation, please call Gary Boteler at 404-680-8570.

BABY LOVE

This new local mission project Baby Love is a big success. Providing disposable diapers and wipes al-low parents to have money to pay their utili-ties, rent, have gas for transportation to find employment, buy school sup-plies, sport equipment for their children, hygiene products, over the counter meds, food, cloth-ing. The list goes on.

FPC has always been a mission church, so let us continue to remember these young families who need our help. Please bring disposable diapers and wipes to church and place them in the Narthex for distribution to the Food Pantry, Homeless Shel-ter, Salvation Army, Project Renewal, and the Pregnancy Crisis Center. Your support is needed and appreciated by many.
