THE GOLDEN EGG

Every Easter Sunday growing up we ate lunch at my Grandma M’s

house. As long as I can remember, all my aunts, uncles, and cousins were

there. Then of course there was the Easter egg hunt! The adults would hide

the Easter eggs in various places around the house and set a gang of kids

loose to find them.

Now I have some fond and some not so fond memories of Easter

which really comes down to my experience of the Easter egg hunt at

Grandma M’s. You see, my Grandma always filled a golden egg with money.

There was only one golden egg. It was always the egg that was hardest to

find.

I have great memories of finding that egg. One year it even had a

twenty dollar bill in it, which of course seemed like a small fortune to my

young self. Yet, I also remember the year I almost got the golden egg. If you

haven’t guessed yet, that is a not so fond memory.

My cousin Sam was right behind me when I found the golden egg

hidden on top of the coffee pot. However, the coffee pot was on and steam

was pouring out of the area were the egg was. I couldn’t garb it with my

hand. Sam, who was right behind me tried and failed too. I decided I would

get one of Grandma’s big spoons and pull it into my bucket. I got the spoon,

placed my basket in the perfect place, and as I spooned the golden egg my

cousin shoved my basket out of the way and took it for herself. Needless to

say there were a lot of tears!

Easter Sunday is fast approaching, and for many of us Easter has

some fond and some not so fond memories. It is a time marked by large

demands on time, unrealistic expectations, and tiredness. As adults, we

don’t really have time to go on an Easter egg hunt, let alone sit and

contemplate what the resurrection means for us.

This year I encourage you to stop if even for a few seconds to find

that golden egg. An egg not given for just a few, but for all. A golden egg of

promise and truth. Christ has risen. You are set free. If you hear nothing

else this Easter season, remember this. Christ is risen, for you and for me,

and just maybe you might find what your heart has been longing for.

Freed in Christ,

Pastor Chris
