Financing the Kingsdon Chronicle
The first Kingsdon Chronicle was published on 1st October 2007, and has, I hope all agree, gone from strength to strength.. At the outset it had been my intention that a free Chronicle could be delivered to every household in the parish funded by voluntary donations. This has been achieved thanks to the generosity of so many. The production cost for the last 12 months has been £400. When the Chronicle first set out I used our old Golden Jubilee account for banking purposes. This account was also used for the defibrillator project. With fund raising now started for the Diamond jubilee celebrations in 2012, it has been decided to open 2 new accounts - ‘Kingsdon Jubilee Fund’ and ‘Kingsdon Chronicle’ Should anyone wish to make a donation to production costs, please send it to Wally Elliott at 4 Manor Close, Kingsdon, cheques payable to the ‘Kingsdon Chronicle’ I do not publish the accounts at the express wish of some donors, but they are available should anyone wish to see them. Please contact Wally for more details.
Angela Gillian Sleap
4th November 1953 - 30th July 2009
The funeral service was held at All Saints Church, Kingsdon on Friday 7th August for Dr. An-gela Gillian Sleap of Oak Cottage, Kingsdon who passed peacefully away on 30th July at St
Margaret’s Hospice following an illness borne with great dignity.
The very moving service conducted by Reverend Jim Hill, commenced with incidental guitar music by Frances Sleap.
Tributes were paid by Dr Sandy Saunders, Angela’s father, Dr Peter Sleap, Angela’s husband, Dr David Lindsay, Angela’s GP colleague and Dr Ja-
net Gillett, Angela’s hospice colleague. Readings were given by Angela’s daughters Esme, Frances and Georgina. Soloist sopra-
no Molly Carroll, sang “Be still my soul”, “Will you go Lassie, go”, and “Silent Noon”.
Angela was laid to rest in a private family interment service.
Paula Jane Barber 27th April 1945 - 12th August 2009
The funeral service was held at Holy Trinity Church, Long Sutton on Friday 21st August for Paula Jane Barber of The Barns, Pitts Lane, Kingsdon, who passed peacefully away at her
home on 12th August.
Paula was born into an army family and spent her early childhood in Malaysia and South Africa. When she was 14 her family moved to Ditcheat before taking over the Unicorn at
Somerton. Whilst at the Unicorn, Paula completed a Cordon Blue cookery course, she be-came renowned for her entertaining. She later lived at Knole before moving to Kingsdon.
Paula leaves two sons, Giles and Chris.

Treasure Hunt with Bacon Butties
The first fund raising event for Kingsdon’s celebrations for the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 was held on Saturday 15th August in the Vil-lage Hall. We are indebted to the following:- Richard South who devised the Treasure Hunt clues and questions. Jill Waters, Babs Conway, Sally Clapperton and Julie South who staffed the Treasure Hunt café serving bacon butties and drinks Marilyn Elliott for organising and running the raffle. By the end of the day £206.50 had been raised towards our target of £2,500 required for the hire costs of the marquee etc in 2012. Winners of the Treasure Hunt were Angela & Trevor Saunders. Some people made use of the Village Street Map on the Village Hall no-tice board but it didn’t do them any good, did it Nigel! Nonetheless many thanks to all who participated.

Thresh brothers hold a family reunion On Friday evening of 31st July whilst having a drink at the Kingsdon Inn, I met three former Kingsdon brothers who were there with their families for a family reunion. Colin Thresh who is 78 was born at 2 Springfield Cottage. He left Kingsdon in 1947 to join the Royal Navy, after which he joined the police service in Bolton, Lancs. where he still lives in retirement. Peter Thresh 76 is now living in Street and Geoff Thresh 66 lives at Chilthorne Domer. Their mother Ena used to keep Kingsdon Post Office and father Dick worked at Lampert Trailers. As one can imagine there was a lot of reminiscing of their days in Kingsdon and of the folks who are still resident here. After a very enjoyable evening they all went on their way with the latest copies of the Kingsdon Chronicle. Wally Elliott
Lloyd and Sarah’s Wedding
The wedding took place on 25th July at Queen Camel Church of Lloyd Attwell and Sarah Messenger. The best man was Simon Attwell and the bridesmaids were Jenny Attwell, the bride’s daughter and Milly Slade. The bridle party left the church for the reception at the village Hall on an old Lampert trailer owned and towed by Robin Attwell with his old David Brown tractor

The Humour Page A man is recovering from surgery when the Surgical Nurse appears and asks him how he is feeling. "I'm O. K. but I didn't like the four letter-words the doctor used in surgery," he answered. "What did he say," asked the nurse. "Oops!"
A very loud Texan Engineer was visiting Australia, and talking big about all of the large civil works in the USA that he was involved in. To be polite his Australian counterpart took him on a tour of some of Sydney’s larger constructions.
First he took him to Gladesville Bridge. The Texan exclaimed, "What’s that!” In reply the Australian said, "Thats the Gladesville Bridge". "Hmmph" said the Texan, "How long and how many men did it take to build?” The Australian replied, "About 5 years with 1000 men." The Texan replied, "Well in Texas we would've done it in 2 years with 500 men."
Next they went to the Sydney Opera House. "What's that" said the Texan. "That's the Sydney Opera House" was the reply.
"Hmmph" said the Texan, "How long and how many men did it take to build?” The Australian replied, "About 10 years with 200 men". The Texan replied "Well in Texas we would've done it in 4 years with 200 men." By this stage the Australian was a little put out by the Texan's attitude so he decided to get some revenge, they walked around the Sydney Opera House and as they did the Sydney Harbour Bridge came into view.
Immediately the Texan exclaimed, "Wow! What's that?"
The Australian Engineer replied, "I don't know, it wasn't there yesterday."
Wally’s day out
While on a trip north on the M5, Wally and Marilyn stopped at a motorway services for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip.
When leaving, Marilyn unknowingly left her glasses on the table. And, she didn't miss them until after they had been driving about twenty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a junction to turn around in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.
All the way back, Wally became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained and scolded Marilyn relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up one minute.
To her relief, they finally arrived at the restau-rant and as the she got out of the car and hur-ried inside to retrieve her glasses, Wally yelled to her, "While you're in there, you might as well get my hat."
Transport Café A grizzled old man was eating in a truck stop when three very large, leathered bikers walked in. The first walked up to the old man, pushed his cigarette into the old man's pie and then took a seat at the counter. The second walked up to the old man, spat into the old man's milk and then he too took a seat at the coun-ter. The third walked up to the old man, turned over the old man's plate, and then he took a seat at the counter.
Without a word of protest, the old man quietly left the diner. Shortly thereafter, one of the bikers said to the waitress, "Humph, not much of a man, was he?"
The waitress replied, "Not much of a truck driver either, he just backed his big-rig over three motorcycles."

Beer is good for you - 'Well you see, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selec-tion is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weak-est brain cells first. In this way, regular con-sumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more effi-cient machine. And that is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.'!
Two atoms were walking down the street. One atom says to the other one, "I've lost an elec-tron”! The 2nd atom replies, "Are you sure?" “Yes” says the 1st atom, "I'm positive."
"Do you realize if it weren't for Edison we'd be watching TV by candlelight?"
Wally goes on holiday
Wally and Marilyn had just reached the airport in the nick of time to catch the plane for their two-week's holiday in Majorca. "I wish we'd brought the piano with us," said Wally. "What on earth for?" asked his Marilyn
"I've left the passports on it."

Chocolat 2000 Cert PG-13 Director Lasse Hallstrom, 2 hours 1 minute, English.
Chocolat
Sandi Toksvig's University of the Bloody Obvious would herald the various expensive and time-consuming research programmes that tell us chocolate makes us feel better. As far as the Juliet Binoche/Johnny Depp is concerned, it seems to be just as popular as the confec-tionery. Binoche plays a mysterious woman who takes over an empty shop in a French village. The time is 1960 and she wants to open her chocolaterie during Lent, much to the horror of the local mayor but her sweet temptations are too much for the suspicious vil-lagers. Then a charismatic water gypsy arrives in the form of Johnny Depp. Partly filmed in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, Chocolat redresses the balance for cinematic red cloaks and makes you long for chocolates. With the ubiquitous Judi Dench and Alfred Molina.

A little true story
1pm Saturday lunch time - arrived home after a couple of pints at the Kingsdon Inn. Saw what that the lunch time score was in the cricket test match, being thought-ful, I phoned the pub for Algy to let chef Clive know the score:
Algy “ Hello, Kingsdon Inn”
Wally “ Algy 147 for 4”
Algy “What? you will have to speak up”
Wally “ 147 for 4”
Algy “You will have to shout”
Wally “147 for 4”
Algy “ Shout louder”
Wally “147 for 4”
Algy “OK”
At 2 pm I receive a call from Algy
Algy “ Aren’t you coming for your lunch
Wally “ Pardon”
Algy “ You phoned earlier and booked a table for 4 at 1.47”

Christmas Greetings in The Chronicle
It has become customary for some Kingsdon residents to place Christmas Greeting messages in the Chronicle for their friends; this in lieu of sending out cards local-ly, the money saved being sent as a donation to their favourite charity or the Chronicle towards its’ produc-tion costs. Should you wish to place a greeting mes-sage in the Chronicle for Christmas this year, I would appreciate if you could let me know a.s.a.p with the wording for the greeting or, let me know if you would like the Chronicle to do this for you. This year all greetings published will be in black & white only, as last Christmas, apart from wearing out one of my col-our printers, the cost of ink was almost £100.
If Marilyn and I were to send cards to all our friends in Kingsdon and in return, received one back and this was replicated by every one sending local cards, how many trees would be required to make the cards?
Chronicle delivery dates
It is hoped that the remaining issues of the Chronicle this year will be published on the following dates:- 30th September, 30th October, 30th November and the Christmas issue on 24th December. Printing normally takes place 2 days before delivery.

Defibrillator saves a squash player
A squash player who collapsed on court was brought back to life by quick-thinking club members. Ted Seaman slumped to the floor of the Cheltenham squash court after suffering a massive heart attack. But for the actions of his playing partner at East Glos Club and the fact there was a defibrillator on site, the 59-year-old driver wouldn't be here to tell the tale. Lying motionless on the hard surface, he was given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by opponent Ross Forno while Dr Finlay Robinson, who rushed to the scene and took charge, shocked his heart back into action with the defibrillator. Had the machine not been available, vital seconds would have been lost before paramedics arrived and Ted would have died. This case highlights the benefits of more people learning those life-saving skills as well as the importance of defib-rillators being available. For information concerning the Kingsdon defibrillator contact Wally on 01935 841444
