From the Editor
Welcome to the February edition, and with thanks to Michelle and Iain Fletcher for their Mini Biographies. I have added many races to the updated Club’s Fixture List. Some are races suggested by club members, some are East Hull Harriers Summer League, and some are the Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association (YVAA) championship events. We are affiliated to the YVAA,, and both male and female club members over 35 can take part in road race championship events at all the standard distances. I have included a note re these and other events, as a preface to the Race Diary. We have reached the final cross country league race stages, and already have one NYSD league champion guaranteed. I expect that we will also have some good age group results at both of our leagues, and so I hope that those in the running will end their season on high note.

Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association Events (YVAA). I have included all the various championship events in the Race Diary. These are mostly road and are part of established races. Enter as normal, but I would add YVAA after SAC for club name, although the race organisers have been made aware which clubs are affiliated to the YVAA. The half marathon championship race at Ackworth on Easter Monday looks good to me. There is also a series of trail races. These are all but one in West Yorkshire and many are midweek evenings. I have included just the exception in the Race Diary which is the Mulgrave Castle event on 3 June. Go to the YVAA web for a full list. There is a cross country championship on 4 March which alas clashes with the final East Yorkshire League at Sewerby. If you still wish to enter, then please let me know. East Hull Harriers Summer League I have included the series of Tuesday night races in the Race Diary. Go the East Hull Harriers web site for details. You can enter on the night. If you think you might do all the races, you can enter all en bloc in advance at a discounted rate. General Enquiries have been made regarding the City of Hull Champagne Road Race League, and the York Road Race League. Both leagues severely restrict entry by clubs and we therefore cannot participate in either.

Notes of Committee Meeting held at Scarborough Rugby Club on 25 January 2018 Present: Harry Forkin, Shaun Tymon, Sean Kelly, Chris Wade, Simon Valente, Tony Tomaszewicz, Sharon Houghton, Mick Thompson Apologies for absence: Ralph Broadley, Melanie Padgham Correspondence: An email had been received stating that the timing clock used for road races in Yorkshire needs to be stored in a new location. It was felt that SAC couldn't assist as a central location is required. Minutes of last meeting: matters arising: Work on improved drainage of the long jump area will start on February 26th. No progress yet on re-siting the club's storage container. Harry and Shaun will meet with the head of Scarborough College next week to discuss the new track to be built on the site. Financial report: Tony Tomaszewicz reported the club's present bank balances. Payment by BACS is to be set up. A list of entitled users of the system will be considered. Social events: no report. Junior section issues: Up to 40 attend on Tuesdays and 50 on Wednesdays. The waiting list has reduced. There are plenty of helpers. Storage cages have been purchased to keep equipment tidy and secure. These can eventually be put in the storage container. Strategic direction of club: Several issues were raised under this heading: There is a need to address non-members running in club sessions long term. Coaches, Run Leaders and Helpers will be provided with named hi-viz gilets. A club notice board may be useful - the Rugby Club will be approached about this. There was felt to be a need to establish what members want from the club. A survey questionnaire will be devised for this. Any other business: A run and talk session focused on mental health will take place as part of the club's runs on February 1st, led by Shaun Tymon.
An on-line shop now operates for club clothing. Date and location of next Committee Meeting: Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Michelle
Years as a runner; I was never a sports person as I just wasn’t good at it, but always found I did enjoy running whilst at school. After having my youngest daughter, I joined boot camps to help shed the baby weight and from there found I still enjoyed the running side of it. I joined SAC in 2015 and have been running on and off for 3 years but in the last year I have got into it more. This was mainly been down to Iain deciding he wanted to see what it was all about and what I got out of it. Annoyingly he seemed to have a natural talent for it and it wasn’t long before our runs saw him leaving me in the distance. He can also be quite competitive. I love SAC I have met so many new friends and love the way everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. Best performance; I haven’t done much in the way of competing, but I think my best performance has to be the GNR last year. I wanted to get a sub 2 hour and beat my 1st attempt from 2015. As I crossed the finish line I felt deflated as the clock was over that already. It wasn’t until I got my text results that I realised I hadn’t taken into consideration the time it had taken me to get over the start line and I successfully got my sub 2 hour in 1hr 56min 12secs beating my first attempt by about 4 minutes. Favourite race; I think the GNR has to be my favourite race at the minute. The first time I did it I found it to be quite emotional. The support and atmosphere, the high fives and the oranges etc from people especially the children as you are running is amazing. Having done the cross country for the first time this season I have found that I quite enjoy them. Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe she can run a marathon in 2hours 15 minutes. That’s only about 20 mins more than what It takes me to do a half marathon in. That’s incredible. Favourite male athlete; Mo Farah and the Brownlee brothers. The Brownlee brothers have a great bond which was shown when Alistair gave up his chance of 3rd place in Mexico to help his brother Johnny. Targets; My targets are to get a sub 50 10k this year as I narrowly missed it at the Scarborough 10k. I would also like to try and get a sub 1.50 half marathon. Ambitions; To just keep running enjoying it and improving and to be able to do more of races as and when family and work life permit. To do a marathon and give fell racing ago. Oh, and maybe try and keep up with Iain again!
Iain
Years as a runner; I went for my first official run in July 2016; I was curious to have a go because Michelle had been running it for a couple of years and seem to really enjoy it. I just could not understand why, so I thought the best thing to do was have a go myself. We went for a 3-mile run it almost killed me, I remember getting back with sore feet and achy legs at this point I was struggling even more to work out why Michelle enjoyed it so much. The next day she dragged me out again this time for a 4-mile run. For some reason it didn’t seem as bad as the previous day but still not something I thought I would continue with, but I had one worry if Michelle tried to run off with the milk man I would be unable to catch her, so I thought to myself this will have to change. I continued with a couple of runs a week and managed to gain a place for the Scarborough 10k. I did the race and when I finished I felt a great sense of achievement and began to understand Michelle’s love for running. So then decided to give it up for a while as I had a couple of niggling pains and a chest infection that would not shift. When I started again in March 2017 I then joined Scarborough AC and met lots of great people, got a little more serious booked a few races. So, all in all I would say I have been a runner for just a little over a year. Best performances; It’s a hard one to answer I have not done that many Races, but My first race was Scarborough 10k finishing 45:46 with no real experience I thought was a great achievement. Also the Great North Run before this the thought of running that distance was unachievable for me but I managed to run it all with no stops in 96:06 minutes I believed was 3
rd for the club, (only problem was I wasn’t a member of the club when I signed up for it and never
thought to update this before the Race.) Favourite Race; This has to be the GNR. I was told by many other club members that I would love the GNR, but I couldn’t help thinking that I probably would not enjoy it. The 13 mile seem such a long distance for me to run, but how wrong could I be after experiencing it for myself with the volume of people that take to the streets to support you, the bands and entertainment along the way I soon realised what everyone was meaning. So if anyone has not yet ran this race I cannot recommend enough it is such a great event. Favourite female athlete; If I’m totally honest I don’t know so many, so to choose a favourite its hard so I just go with the obvious choice of Jessica Ennis as she is inspiring with the wide range of events she competed in at such amazing level. Favourite Male Athlete; Another Obvious answer with Mo Farah. I watched him race quite a few times and he seems to own the whole race, and seems to just sit back in the middle of the pack and every so often pop into lead just to remind the leader he’s there, and can pass them when he feels like it, which is very entertaining to watch. Targets; This year I am hoping to achieve: Sub 40min 10K, Sub 90min half marathon Ambitions; The main is to keep progressing increase my distance and speed I can see a marathon on the horizon (when I pluck up courage to enter one). Funny Moment; There is only one time that spring to mind on the build up to Scarborough 10k 2017 I did a few training runs with fellow SAC member Chris. These were pre 6am on Saturday Mornings. On one of these runs we set off as usual round the sea front, and about half way round I was getting a pain in one of my toes, and by the time we got to the Sea Life Centre,I had to stop and see what was going on. I took my trainer off and one of my toes was bleeding and another toe must have been catching it. I sorted it out then put my trainer back on. It was at this point I noticed my trainers looked differently one green and one black, it would seem I had put one of my first running trainers on which were a size to small. It was at this point Chris noticed his shorts were inside out, so my advice would be: early runs are ok, but best to double check your clothing before leaving the house so you don’t look like a plonker. Sorry if this has bored anyone after I’ve been running for a few more years I may have some more interesting stories to tell!
