My schedule now more definite. Many of you have been kind to ask
how my search is going for a church around Birmingham, Alabama.
While I had been in touch with all the PCUSA churches in the area who
currently are looking for pastors, and had had conversations with some
of their search committees, until the last few weeks nothing definite was
happening. Now, however, while things are still far from final, one of the search committees
wants to move forward with my nomination. I must be examined by the presbytery’s commit-
tee on ministry, be voted on by the congregation, and then be examined by the presbytery; but
I’m very encouraged by the prospect that all of that will work out. If it does, then I would prob-
ably begin as pastor of the church in Alabama sometime in May, perhaps as early as May 1. You
all have been very kind to allow me to continue here at Central while I was looking for my next
call, and I am mindful how important it will be for you to have good leadership lined up as soon
as possible after I depart. So, especially since my schedule is firming up, it’s time now for me to
set a departure date in order that Central can begin to make definite plans. At last week’s meeting of the Personnel Committee, we decided that April 3, the Sunday after Easter, will be
my last day of ministry among you. (My fingers almost wouldn’t type that last line!) It’s still too
early for good-byes, but I wanted you all to know the timing. I’m sure there will be opportuni-
ties to celebrate our time together as we near April 3.
Good news about our organists. Most of you know Flint Dollar, who has been playing the organ
for us during worship since last fall. His academic schedule has become increasingly full as he
moves farther along in his degree program in the ISU School of Music, so we really needed to
find some other persons who could join the “rotation” as organist. Providentially, two very tal-
ented and helpful persons—Susan Outlaw Stallings and Becky McCabe—have agreed to help.
We have developed a calendar so that each of Becky, Susan, and Flint know which Sunday they
are covering for the next few months. With the passage of each month, we’ll try to extend that
calendar another month into the future. Many thanks to Flint, Susan, and Becky: please let them
know of your appreciation when you see them.
Brief update on the sanctuary. The session agreed that it would be a good idea to seek, from
another forensic engineer, a “second opinion” on what repairs are needed in order to stabilize
the church structure. That engineer, Tim Dickson of Dickson-Schaefer, Ltd. (Indianapolis, IN),
was on site on February 1 to inspect the building and to review our documentation. We hope
to hear his recommendations sometime in the next few weeks.
