Welcome
First Year Orientation for Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME)
Tue, February 1, 2011
A.M. Birk – Head
MME Orientation 2011 3Feb 1, 2011
• MME uses principles of mathematics, materials, graphics, physics and economics to conceive, design, develop, manufacture, operate and maintain processes and devices that benefit society.
• MME is the broadest of the engineering disciplines, and is present in every sector (industry, transportation, education, health care, government).
What is MME ?
MME Orientation 2011 4Feb 1, 2011
Is MME for you?• Are you interested in how things work?• Are you interested in how things are made?• Would you like to invent something?• Would you like to run your own company or consulting
firm one day?• Would you like to have an impact on how the world
produces and uses energy to do useful things?• Would you like to help make the world a better place for
everyone?

Where do you want to work?• MME’s are in…
– Energy (Fossil Fuel, Nuclear, Solar, Geothermal, Wind ….)– Environment (bio-fuels, bio-resources, bio-remediation)– Design and Manufacturing (toys to rocket engines)– Construction (building systems, tunnels, …)– Transportation (land, sea, air and space) – Health and Medicine (biomechanical, biomedical)– Military (from jet pilots to ships engineers)– Chemical process, Oil and gas exploration and production,
pipelines, …– Consulting (all of the above …)
MME Orientation 2011 19Feb 1, 2011
Other Careers ?• MME Degree can be foundation for just about any
career… – Engineering– Architecture– Education– Business– Law– Medicine, Dentistry …
• whatever you want to do, MME can help you get there.
MME Orientation 2011 20Feb 1, 2011
The Program • Designed to give you a solid foundation in MME• Designed to be flexible if you are not yet
committed to a specialty.• Can Choose from three options
– General MME (ME1)– Materials (ME2) (more … room 306 at 7:30, 7:50 ) – Biomechanical (ME3) (more … room 315 at 7:30,
7:50)
MME Orientation 2011 21Feb 1, 2011
• Common 2nd and mostly in 3rd year, electives and team design project in 4th year
• General Option ME1, concentrations in: Aerospace Engineering Energy and Fluid Systems Manufacturing Engineering Mechatronics/Robotics Engineering
• Materials Option ME2 in years 3 and 4• Biomechanical Option ME3 in years 3 and 4
The Program
MME Orientation 2011 22Feb 1, 2011
Learning Experience
• Theory (lectures) + practice (labs)• Technical + Communication• Hands on -- Lab and project based• Work alone and in teams, just like in the
real world
MME Orientation 2011 23Feb 1, 2011
ME1 General Option
• Gives you the basics and then some…– Math and numerical methods, computing– Thermodynamics, fluids and heat transfer– Solid mechanics and dynamics– Graphical, written and verbal communication– Material Properties – Electronics, Mechatronics– Design and Manufacturing– Project Management
• Wide range of technical electives so you can try out some specialty fields
MME Orientation 2011 24Feb 1, 2011
Materials Option ME2(2 courses in 3rd year, 3 from 6 courses in 4th year)
• Development of improved and new materials
• Production, use and characterization of manufactured materials
• Investigate fractures, fatigue failures, corrosion and radiation damage
• Metallic, plastic and ceramic materials
• No device without materials!
before
after
dramatic dimensional change in stainless steel due
to exposure in a nuclear reactor (MECH 483)
MME Orientation 2011 25Feb 1, 2011
Biomechanical Option ME3
• Get a degree in mechanical engineering with “biomechanical engineering option” stated on the transcript
• Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC)
• Model follows that of ME2 materials option (2 courses in 3rd year, 3 from 6 courses in 4th year)
commercial hip implant
MME Orientation 2011 26Feb 1, 2011
Advice for choosing a Discipline ?
• Select the discipline that will hold your interest for the next 3 years.
• Choice of discipline influences the first job placement – after that you can usually pick your path. – to management, technical specialty, … your own business.
MME Orientation 2011 27Feb 1, 2011
Want to be a specialist?
• Start thinking about graduate school.– You get paid to be a grad student.– MSc degree is the entry level degree for some
fields.– May need an MSc one day to be a P.Eng.
• Talk to Professors.• Look into scholarships.
MME Orientation 2011 28Feb 1, 2011
Facilities
• Main building is McLaughlin Hall• Materials in Nicol Hall (recently
renovated).• Biomechanical in Hospital (HMRC)• Undergrad labs in Jackson Hall and the
ILC.• New building for MME to be
constructed behind the ILC by 2013
