On Your Mark…The start of a new school year is always, let me see…exciting, scary, demanding, delightful. The anticipation of new and returning students filling the campus with their shouts and laughter is a little like getting ready for a race. We’re al-ways a bit anxious about who will show up, who will run, and who will stay the course.
But God knows who will be here and why. His admonition to us in Philip-pians 4:6-7 is Do not be anxious for any-thing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Get Set…Now can you imagine the anxiety of new students? Imagine being 8…12…16 and leaving home to live with 15 other boys or girls in a house with two adults who will act as your parents, in a strange, exotic place called French Camp Academy. No matter how bad things might be, going into the unknown can be scary.
Actually, not everything is unknown. Prospective students come with their families to interview, tour, and decide if they want to give FCA a try. Seeing our beautiful campus, meeting some of the friendly staff, and observing a nor-mal day help put their minds and hearts at ease.
When they arrive on campus, they are com-ing from different backgrounds and com-munities, with a mixture of expectations. We greet them, help them get settled in their rooms, and go over the basics. Parents are invited to stay for a Welcome Picnic before saying Good-bye, I’ll write soon…
Go!The next few days are busy with student orientation. At the Rising Son Retreat Center, it may all look like fun and games, but everything has a team building agenda attached. A group of students gathers at the climbing tower to cheer on a classmate as he scales the wall. An-other group waits for a friend to launch onto the zip line.
Meanwhile, back at the school, other students meet teachers and tour classrooms. Papers are passed out and general instructions are given. Students get a play by play of the school day schedule, as well as student hand-books that will help them get off to a good start.
The Race Is OnStudent homes will be the starting and finishing line for each day. House parents and students have breakfast and devotions each morning (food for the body and the spirit). After a full day of classes, activities, work and dining, students settle into their homes for a little R&R, study hall, and planning for the next day.
Some will struggle to find their rhythm and others will take everything in stride. This is not a short sprint, but a long endurance race. Each student has obstacles to overcome, fences to hurdle, burdens to shed, and injuries that will affect each step of the way.
Cheer LeadersWe don’t want any of them to give up, so we coach, encourage, and even run with them. One foot in front of another…Helping set the pace…Constantly training…And cheer-ing for every effort made to run with endur-ance the race set before them.
As we, the staff, keep the goal of glorify-ing Christ before us, we also must throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. The coaches must live with integrity and not only tell, but live out, life in Christ. We cannot do this on our own; it is by His power that we do this.
Going for the GoldGod knows our troubles…mine, yours, theirs. He carries our burdens and tells us to carry one another’s burdens: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (II Corinthians 1:3-4)
Therefore, please pray for the students and staff. We are all here because French Camp Academy is where God wants us to be. We never turn away a student if we believe we can help him/her. Therefore, pray for those who give to provide for French Camp Academy students. After all, reaching the goal and receiving the Gold in this race, is a team effort. u

What to invest in?

ACADEMY
It seems like a lot of folks these days are asking where to put what little extra income they may have. Then this poses the questions, what risks are in-volved and, what are the rewards? Sometimes, for those who may be a little more financial savvy, the question arises, what costs are involved with making the investment?—fees and such.
Here at French Camp, we ask those same types of questions. How much can we put into a new pro-gram, buildings, or sidewalks to make that invest-ment effective? Will this investment honor God and His resources with an eye toward good stewardship?
Some may ask, What is stewardship? One dictionary defines it this way—a person who manages anoth-er’s property or financial affairs; one who adminis-ters anything as the agent of another or others.
In the life of Christians, we understand that all we have or ever will have does not belong to us, but to the one who created it—God. God has allowed what belongs to Him to be entrusted to us for a purpose, that is, that we would use our stuff for His glory and His purposes. So, in fact, we are all stewards since we all have stuff, money, cars, and homes. In reality, we really do not own them; they are all God’s.
We take our responsibility of stewardship very seri-ously at French Camp. We do make investments and they are costly at times. As French Camp borders on its 127 year ministry mark, the campus is showing her age. The old gray mare ain’t what she used to be.
We are making investments that cost money, time and effort. The difference though, between these investments and the ones we consider with our fi-nancial advisors, is that the cost of these investments ultimately gives us a very important and greater re-ward. It is the investment in the life of a child.
So what is one child worth? How do you put chil-dren’s lives in a financial budget?
These are not easy questions to answer. We must seek God’s Word for these answers. God’s Word has ALL the answers, even the economic ones.
The Bible tells us, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son (Jesus) that whoever would be-lieve in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. That really tells me what a child’s life is worth, what your life is worth to God. He loves you and me and these young ones enough to give His own Son’s life for ours. What a deep amazing sacrificial love!
So at French Camp, we faithfully pay the cost of in-vestment so that young people have the opportunity to meet and know who God is. We pray that they will learn to accept His love for them and have new lives as the result.
We believe there is no greater investment!
Buildings shift and creak, athletic uniforms fade and tear, sidewalks crack and crumble, but God’s love and mercy in a life stands the test of time—for eter-nity.
A big thank you to all of you who help us make French Camp what it is. If you have yet to partner with us in this work, we ask you to prayerfully con-sider us in your stewardship planning.
Haven’t been here? We would love for you to visit. Bring a friend, spouse, or bring a group! It would be our privilege to show you what God is doing here at “One Fine Place.”
Investing in eternity,
Stewart
If you are looking for someone who loves the Lord, is a hard worker and a faithful friend, we have him right here at French Camp Academy. Roy Purvis has served FCA in many ways since 1976.
He started as a Board of Trustees member, chair-
ing the Plant and Property Committee through 1981. While still owning a welding supply business in Greenville, he and his wife, Rosemary, moved to French Camp to serve wherever their skills and abilities were needed.
Roy’s easy going nature, strong work ethic, and hu-mility along with his construction and maintenance skills made him a great fit for FCA. For years he helped out with grounds work and building main-tenance.
During the 1990s he returned to his welding business, sold it, and came back to FCA. In 1998, following the death of Ralph Newman (another godly, commit-ted servant at FCA), Roy became the Di-rector of Maintenance and Plant & Prop-erty.
Today, Roy serves the Lord with gladness on campus, in his church, community and family. He is being honored as Staff Member of the Year by his fellow workers. Some of the characteristics that FCA staff commended Roy for are his generosity with time, money and talents, being a role model for all, and his faithfulness.
Roy and Rosemary have seven children: Kim, Ja-son, Scott, Len, Jeff, Melanie and Michael. Their ten grandchildren light up their eyes and enliven the house. Roy enjoys music, especially playing the dul-cimer and singing.
Roy continues serving, keeping us up and running, speaking life to students and staff, and joyfully ac-cepting whatever role he’s asked to fill. The staff of French Camp Academy is honored to have Roy Purvis as a fellow worker and friend, leading by ex-ample with a life that glorifies God. u

“The most important [commandment],” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as your-self.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” — Mark 12:29-31

Mission Teams: Here and ThereBy Sylvia Dickson
What makes French Camp Academy so special? We are a community. That means we work together, learn together, worship together and laugh together. We also serve together.
Where in the World?Missions at FCA is both give and take. We send mission teams to serve others; others send mission teams to serve us. Using resources and abilities to meet others’ needs in the name of Jesus is what missions is about. This summer, staff and students joined forces to go to Haverfordwest, Wales. Here are excerpts from the team’s report:• The Welsh culture lacks foundational knowledge of Bible stories and Bibli-
cal truths.• During the week, 21 kids attended Holiday Bible Club…an emphasis was
placed on the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The kids soaked it up…with many questions and explanations to parents when they went home. Each day they memorized a scripture.
• Each afternoon and evening was spent with teenagers in games and activities followed by conversation about the importance of Biblical truth and a rela-tionship with Christ. Most of these are youth we have built relationships with over the past several years so it was a joy to go a step deeper with each of them.
• The week was filled with opportunity to share the good news of the Gospel, build relationships with children in the
community and their parents and teach them God’s word. The continuing relation-ship with Hill Park Baptist Church and the children and youth of Haverfordwest allows us to have an ongoing ministry to this lost culture.
During some of the school break times, stu-dents and staff travel to Ft. Worth, TX, Mexico, and other areas for mission work.
No LosersMissions is a win/win situation. Involving students in mission and service work gives them valuable experience to take with them into the world. The people we go to and the people who go are all encouraged, helped, and shown Christian love. The goal? To glorify Christ through a heart of compassion.
Home MissionsMeanwhile, back at the campus, other mission teams are building, painting, teaching VBS, clearing trails, cooking, and hosting sports camp. We are so thankful for the many churches, businesses, civic groups and individuals who carve out a day…a week…or more and come to FCA to help. Here are pictures from a few of the groups who have inspired us to continue the work by their love and good deeds. u

Right: We are grateful to Grace Evan-gelical Church volunteers of German-town, TN who led VBS, cleared trails, and painted for us.

French camp academy alumni news Where Are They NoW?
Sillahs Shine at MC and UUBy Sylvia Dickson
Kawsu and Bangali Sillah are not com-mon French Camp names. And, al-though they have many things in com-mon, these brothers are pretty special.
In 1999, Ouma Sillah, a single mother with five children, arrived in America. Originally from Sierra Leone, they had lived in a refugee camp in Gambia for about four years. Bangali’s first memories are of living in a mud hut and hearing a next door neighbor singing Christian songs.
When Kawsu and Bangali were around six years old, they immigrated to America and lived in Memphis, TN. Their mother realized the importance of her sons getting a good education, so she enrolled them in Neighborhood Christian School where they attended through the eighth grade.
During this time, the brothers formed a close friendship with the Purselley family. Through them, the Sillah family was introduced to French Camp Academy, which came to be the next step in their education.. Both young men graduated from FCA, Kawsu in 2010 and Bangali in 2011. Lamin, a younger brother is currently a senior at FCA.
While at FCA, Kawsu and Bangali were known for their athletic ability, strong work ethic, and growth in their commitment to Christ. Kawsu participated in football, bas-ketball, track and baseball. He also was voted Mr. FCA his senior year. He comments: It was not by my hard work, but by God’s grace alone that I was given such a high award.
Bangali played football, ran track and cross country at FCA. Two highlights of his FCA days are winning the first football game against Weir in over 20 years, and plac-ing second on the mile relay at the state track meet.
Both Sillahs say that the teachers, dorm parents and other staff were great role models. Kawsu put it this way: They all helped push me to strive for greatness—not only academi-cally but physically, mentally, and spiritually. Bangali added, I learned how to be respon-sible and to make sure to always have a Christ-like attitude.
Kawsu is a junior at Mississippi College in Clinton, MS and has a GPA of 3.85. His goal is to become a coach and use his ability and knowledge to encourage young people. Bangali is now a sophomore at Union University in Jackson, TN, finishing his freshman year with a 3.0 GPA. After graduating from college, he is planning to go into construction work with a vision of returning to Africa to rebuild broken houses.
Kawsu and Bangali are aware of God’s presence in their lives, in every good or bad thing that happens. Their life in Sierra Leone, Gambia, immigrating to the USA, liv-ing at FCA, college, and the future are summed up with this confidence: For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope’. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Giving their lives to Christ is a personal, day-by-day commitment to deny self and give ALL GLORY TO GOD, because they are convinced that by faith in Christ, they will live with him forever. Because of that, they are living for Him now. u
Head of the Class: Alex LawsonBy Sylvia Dickson
After graduating from French Camp Acad-emy in 1972, Alex Lawson has made his way back not once, but twice.
Alex came to FCA in the fall of 1968 as a freshman. That spring, his sister, Sandy, had graduated. She came to FCA following their parents’ divorce and Alex lived with his grand-mother for two years. He became a victim of gang violence in his school, so French Camp was a safe school solution for him.
Alex was involved in the music program under Jim and Helen Hill. He has wonderful memories of traveling with the French Camp Singers to perform and help with youth retreats. The Hill’s also took him under their wings to tutor him back to grade level academics.
When Alex graduated, he went to work to earn money for college. He majored in Social Science and Secondary Education at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS. His goal when he started was to be in law enforcement. By the time he was a senior, he knew God was calling him to the ministry.
In 1979, he received his Master’s of Religious Education from New Or-leans Baptist Theological Seminary. He then went to Arkansas where he worked in youth and music ministry and taught school for 10 years. Second Time AroundHe returned to French Camp in 1990 to teach in a Christian school, and unknown to him (but well planned by God), to meet Becky Will-coxon, who was teaching Bible at FCA. They married in 1991 and now have three children, Daniel, Faith and Joy.
In 1993, Alex was called as the Pastor for Looxahoma Baptist Church in Senatobia, MS, where he served for nine years. Then, for three years, he was Pastor at Beacon Street Baptist in Philadelphia, MS.
Third Time’s the CharmCurrently he is Pastor at Bethsaida Baptist Church in French Camp, and stands at the head of the class at French Camp Academy. Enter the doors of the English IV classroom and you know you’re in for a treat. Alex Lawson now teaches a class that in the past, he would much rather have slept through or skipped altogether. Lawson teaches with a wit and enthusiasm that keeps his class on its toes.
His experiences as a dorm student, his family history, exposure to school violence and love for Christ all add together to make Alex Lawson an exceptional teacher, insightful counselor, and compassionate pastor. u
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perse-verance the race marked out for us. — Hebrews 12:1

Perhaps you have reached a point in life when you are beginning to think about making a larger chari-table gift to FCA. In talking with other friends like you, I have found that a good many would like to make larger gifts, but feel that the need to retain assets to provide future income prevents them from making those gifts. If this describes you, then take a moment to think about a charitable gift annuity.
A charitable gift annuity works like this:
• An individual like you turns a lump sum of money, stock or property over to French Camp Academy. Every year, or several times a year for the rest of your life, French Camp Academy will send you a check. Th e amount of your check will be the same every time regardless of whether the economy rises or recedes, usually between 6-11% of your fi nancial gift.
• Th e IRS allows you a substantial tax deduction in the year the money is given for the gift annui-ty, generally from 30 - 50% of the amount of the gift. In addition to your hefty annual income, the IRS allows a sizeable portion of it to be tax free!
• Rates and payments are guaranteed and it’s based upon a predetermined government scale that our bank facilitates for us. Th at’s how it works.
For example: As a donor, age 80, you give $10,000 for a charitable gift annuity. The annuity rate based on your age is 6.8%. You will receive annually, $680, $567 of which will be tax free for your esti-mated life span. In addition, you potentially claim a charitable deduction of $4,669* for your gift.
If you are interested in learning more, give Lance Ragsdale a call at (662) 547-6482, or send an email to [email protected].
*Based on calculations in effect at the time of print-ing and subject to change. The charitable portion of your gift will be determined as of the gift date. u
Giving that Gives Back - An FCA Charitable Gift Annuity
I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you.
I said, ‘You are my servant’;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dis-mayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Think October: fall settling on the air…temperatures dropping…leaves turning gold, red, yellow and orange…marshmallow roasting and story-telling by the campfire…and French Camp Harvest Festival.
Every year, for more than 60 years, French Camp, MS has hosted Harvest Festival and the Grand Auction on the second Saturday of October. This year, that date is October 13.
As you approach the Cain-Pat-terson Gymnasium where activi-ties kick off around 9:30, you can smell food cooking on the grill and voices of eager shoppers who have arrived early to get a close up view of the auction items. Folks stop to visit while shopping for homemade items in the Country Store: bread, jams, preserves, sugar cane, and handcrafted items.
The auction bidding is fast and furious as one after another joins the fun. You stand in awe as each item finds a new home, whether it’s a bushel of peanuts, a handcrafted porch swing, or a pieced quilt. Most of the pro-
ceeds go to benefit the young people at French Camp Academy.
At noon, everyone takes a break for the fabulous dinner-on-the-grounds. You stand in one of the lines and heap your plate full of food. There is plenty to go around, supplied by French Camp Academy. You could have brought your favorite dish to add to the bounty; instead, you make a generous donation in one of the boxes on the tables.
Activities in the Natchez Trace Historic District are in full swing, so you hop on the shuttle for a short ride from the gym. You saun-ter through the District, browsing in the Log Cabin Gift Shop and Double Blessings Thrift Shop, touring the restored cabins, homes and museum.
Families watch as delighted children perch atop horses for rides. Everyone you see is enjoying something: musi-cians playing, craftsmen working, and old-fashioned sorghum molasses mak-ing. The Council House Café is serving up box lunches for those who missed the dinner-on-the-grounds—or just got hungry again.
Harvest Festival has grown from a local event to a gathering time for friends and families from across the United States and beyond. Become part of this tradition by joining with the many that gather for French Camp Harvest Festival every October. You are bound to see someone you know—if not this year, next.
Call (662) 547-6482 or visit the website www.frenchcamp.org for more information on the French Camp Harvest Festival, Saturday, October 13th, 2012. u

French Camp’s Harvest FestivalBy Sylvia Dickson
Christine Reagan founded a crafts club in Carrollton, MS so she could teach young people quilting, crochet, ceramics and other arts. At the age of 80 she died in a car wreck. Memorials were sent to North Carrollton Methodist Church and fabric was purchased to make a special quilt. Because of her interest in helping young people, the quilt, named Christine’s Garden, was donated to French Camp Academy to be auctioned at the 2012 Harvest Festival. Pictured above are three of the quilters: Ellen Hey, Elizabeth Hey and Susan Dunn.
Reunion: We are Looking Forward to Looking BackClasses of 1980–1990 (‘82 celebrates 30 years; ‘87 cel-ebrates 25 years), gather at the FCA Welcome Center Saturday, October 13, 2012 for a come-and-go reunion from 5:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m.
Please let Lisa Henning know if you can help with this event: (662) 547-6482 [email protected].
We are looking for someone from each class to help.
