Review of Events from 1 Samuel
I. Beginning of Kingship for Israel
Samuel is born and called to be a Prophet
Israel defeated by the Philistine; Ark taken & restored
II. Kingship in Israel—Samuel
People request a king, Samuel anoints Saul, choice is confirmed and he is inaugurated at ceremony
Saul’s Kingship is a failure
III. Establishment of Kingship in Israel
David enters Saul’s service, becomes alienated. Jon-athan protects David from Saul who tries to kill him. Saul kills priests at Nob, David rescues the people of Keilah, Saul still hunts David, David spares Saul’s like, David threatens Nabal’s life, David spares Saul and enters Achish’s service. Saul’s reign ends.
And so the first book of Samuel ends with the death of a king, who if he would have obeyed God would have had a kingdom established forever.
