Memory Verse
Father forgive them for they do not know what they do. Luke
Bible Story Summary
Jesus was taken to Golgotha to be crucified. He was hung on the cross. At the same time, two criminals were also crucified on crosses to the right and left of Jesus. While on the cross, Jesus forgave the people for what they had done to Him. At the foot of the cross, people stood around watching. The high priests and the scribes mocked Him. The soldiers also mocked Jesus and said that if He was the King of the Jews, He should save Himself. One of the criminals who hung on a cross next to Jesus said to Him that if He was indeed the Christ, He should save them all. The other criminal on the other cross recognised who Jesus was, and knew that He had been wrongly condemned to death. The criminal asked to be remembered when Jesus returned to His kingdom. Jesus saw the man’s humility and repentance, and told him that they would be together in Paradise. When it was twelve noon, it became dark for three hours. Then Jesus cried out, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” After Jesus said this, He died. (Luke 23:32–49).

Bible Text Luke 23:32–49
Good Friday
Jesus was taken to Golgotha to be crucified. He was hung on the cross. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”1
At the foot of the cross soldiers drew lots for His clothing. People stood around watching. The high priests and the scribes mocked Him. They said, “He saved others. Let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
The soldiers also mocked Jesus and offered Him sour wine. On Jesus’ cross it was written, This is the King of the Jews. They said, “If you are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
At the same time, two criminals were also crucified on crosses on the right and left side of Jesus. One of the criminals taunted Jesus and said, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us!”
The criminal on the other cross corrected him. “Do you not even fear God, since you have been condemned to death? We have been justly condemned. We have received a just sentence for our deeds. This man, though, has done nothing wrong.” He then said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”2
Jesus told him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”
It was twelve noon and suddenly it became dark for three hours. The sun no longer shone and the veil of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus cried out, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” After Jesus said this, He died.3

Colour illustration story cards (page 5
Before You Teach the Lesson
• Print and cut out the colour illustration cards. The illustrations are fromthe Palm Sunday, Lord’s Supper, Jesus before Pilate and Journey toGolgotha lessons.
What You Should Do
1 Show the children each illustration. Ask them to put the illustrations in the order they think the events occurred, and briefly discuss each event. Then ask the children to identify which event caused Jesus to suffer the most. They may
choose the picture of Him in front of the soldiers. Tell the children that in the lesson today they will learn about the events that happened after the picture where Jesus died so we could have our sins forgiven.

Before You Teach the Lesson
• Print the full colour illustration for Good Friday.
What You Should Do
1 Begin telling the story. Show the Good Friday illustration to the children. Ask the children how Jesus might have felt when He was treated so badly. Emphasise that Jesus asked our heavenly Father to forgive the people who mocked him and wrongly accused Him. Continue telling the story.
2 Ask them to predict what they think Jesus will say next. Finish telling the story to the end.
3 Point out that Jesus reacted in the same forgiving way to the people who accused Him and to both criminals. Emphasise that Jesus suffered greatly and died for

us so our sins could be forgiven. Explain to them that His example shows “the once brought, fully valid sacrifice, and bitter suffering and death of Christ” (CNAC QA:
37 – The Seventh Article of Faith). In other words, this sacrifice was only brought once but is valid for all people who have ever lived and who will ever live.

Things You Need
 Clear jar Container with bleach
 Water Food colouring
Before You Teach the Lesson
• Fill a clear jar ¾ full of water
What You Should Do
1 Show the children the clear water, then add some food colouring to the water. Ask them if the water is still clean. They should agree that the colour has made it unclean. Pour some bleach into the water and stir until the water becomes clear.
2 Explain to the children that sometimes the choices we make lead us to do things that we should not do. In some cases
when we do such things, we are committing a sin which is an act that does not please God. Ask the children to give you examples of sins they may commit. For example, lying, stealing, or not honouring their parents. Then explain that similar to how the bleach turned the water clear, it is through Jesus’ suffering and God’s grace that we can be freed from sin and have our sins forgiven.

Teacher Tip: Before the

much bleach it takes to make
the water become clear.
Teacher Note: The sacrifice
of Jesus cannot really be
compared to something
as trivial as this example.
The significance of Jesus’
sacrifice far surpasses our
understanding. This example
merely serves to give children of
this age group a tiny idea
of what it means to have their
sins forgiven.
