The Annual Meeting of the congregation is scheduled for Sunday, January 30, immedi-ately following the second worship service. A light lunch will be served, and child care will be available for children. We will begin the meeting even as people are eating in order to honor people’s time commitment and keep the event to a reasonable time. Could we do it in an hour? Last year we were just over 90 min-utes.

Among the important considerations will be (of course!) the 2011 budget and spending plan – which will be included in the Annual Report that you will be able to read well in advance of the meeting. An important piece of that spending plan will hopefully include mon-ies to fund a part-time pastor to work with Pastor Phil over the coming months. In addi-tion, the plans for a three-year Capital Ap-

peal / Mortgage Reduction effort will be pre-sented, and the Transition Task Force will give an update on their first steps in their nine-month project. We have also updated the FLC Constitution and Bylaws for congregational action. (Two informational forums have already been held for questions and comments, and copies of the updated version are available in the church office.)

Most of all, though, we will be setting the stage for this important year ahead, and each member of FLC – that’s YOU – is a critical piece in our future! So would you mark the date on your calendar and make plans to at-tend?

Thanks for your participation in this ministry we share as God’s people.

SCRIP at FLC Thanks to all who purchased SCRIP cards for your holiday gift-giving! Remem-ber, SCRIP cards are for more than just gifts! Consider purchasing SCRIP cards for your everyday shopping needs. “Shopping cards” are available for the places you shop every day: grocery stores, gas stations, department and discount stores, and restaurants! We have a wide variety of popular cards on-hand every week, and if you don’t see what you want, we can probably order it for you! A portion of each “shopping” card sold will come back to the church to help support the ministry of FLC.

Find more information and purchase SCRIP cards at the SCRIP table, which will be set upon Sundays between services. An all-inclusive list of participating stores is available. Cards ordered Sunday are available for pick-up the following week. You can help sell cards, too! We are looking for volunteers to help sell SCRIP gift cards on Sunday mornings. Please contact Mara Ceason – 651-463-8660 or [email protected] – if you’d be willing to volunteer.

From the Pastor

Church Council Notes

At the December 14 Council Meeting, the Finance Report indicated that November income was considerably less than projected with expenses exceeding income by nearly $8,000. This has reduced the cash fund balance (cash reserves) to $25,000, a net decline of $37,000 since the beginning of the year. Additionally, with cancellation of worship on Dec 11 and the reduced attendance on Dec 12 due to the snowstorm, the offering was severely impacted for that typically strong giving weekend. In view of that, the Council agreed that a letter should be sent to all member households apprising them of the situation and asking them to check where they are with their year-end giving. Treasurer Greg Lambert will also give an informational announcement at all worship ser-vices on the weekend of December 18/19.

Treasurer Greg Lambert reported that he has received 2011 projections for income and spending from all ministry areas, and he outlined the “preliminary” 2011 budget (projected income and spending plan). Currently, the projected income is $56,000 below the anticipated expenses, and a reworked budget will be presented to the Council in January to bring for congregational consideration at the Annual Meeting. The preliminary 2011 projected spending includes $40,000 for

IT’S NOT CHRISTMAS ANYMORE … IS IT?

This is so weird! I am sitting here at my computer just a couple of days BEFORE Christmas – with the plans for all the worship services and sermons and special visits and family stuff spinning in my head – and here I am, trying to write an article that you will be reading AFTER all of that has passed, after the hubbub has come and gone, even after many of the presents are put away and the decorations are taken down. It’s weird – because now I have to somehow compartmentalize my pre-Christmas frenzy and put myself in a post-Christmas mindset: focusing on the New Year ahead, not candlelight wor-ship; drawing attention to the January Annual Meeting, not the story of the manger; engaging you in ideas about our ministry staff and budget issues, not the wonder of excited children and gathered families. You know, I don’t think I can do it. In fact, I don’t know if I want to do it! It seems like once Christmas Eve is past, we move on from the essence of Christmas so quickly, and before we know it, Christmas has been put away for another year. So how about if I keep Christmas going right on into January with this article! Of course, I am not talking about keeping the decorations up or singing Christmas carols all month long or (heaven-forbid) going to the mall for more gifts. Instead, I’m talking about seeking to retain the essence of what Christmas proclaims: the truth that “Immanuel” has come into the world, that “God is with us.” So how about if we approach every Sunday in January with the excitement of Christmas Eve, not only wanting to be in worship ourselves, but inviting our families to gather with us, encouraging our friends to come, expecting to encounter something special, to glimpse again and again, week after week, that God is with us! And how about if we look at each coming week with the idea of being extra generous, finding time to wrap up and give some gifts – not store-bought gifts, but gifts of loving service, gifts of time and attention for others, gifts that help others know that God is with us! How about if we greet one another over and over with the un-ashamed enthusiasm of a Christmas greeting, or take the time to write a card to a person you care about, or offer a “Christ”-centered greeting to someone at work or school or in your neighborhood – a reminder both for you and the other that God is with us! How about if we take our memory of Christmas family meals and help make that a reality for God’s bigger family, looking at the bounty in our cupboards and joyfully opening our hearts to fill the

Food Shelf basket until it overflows like our Christmas tables – a sure sign that no one should hunger when God is with us! How about if you and I become the bright lights of Christmas that will shine warmth into the cold, darker days of January? When we take down the trimmings and the lights, how about if you and I light up, refusing to fall victim to the malaise of things as usual, redoubling our divine laughter, encouraging the joy of faith in one another, en-gaging the world’s sadness with the glow of knowing “God is with us.” Now wouldn’t that be a great January? Wouldn’t that be more along the lines of what God wanted for us when he sent Jesus into the world to be God with us? I pray that it might be so for us this new year. Hey, I’m kind of glad I had to write this before Christmas – before Christmas got away from me this year.

Blessings, Pastor Phil

additional pastoral support.

The Council was reminded of the Annual Ministry Team reports that are due for the Annual Report. The Annual Report will be published and available for members to pick up at worship on the weekend of January 15/16. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 30, after the second service.

Kris Akin reported that the ten-member Transitional Task Force has now met three times and will begin their evaluative tasks in earnest after the first of the new year. The overall mission of this group is to evaluate our cur-rent ministry and project the direction and needs of our congregation in the next five years, and their tasks will necessitate significant input from congregational mem-bers. This work is an important preliminary step to the eventual work of a Call Committee in selecting a new senior pastor.

The Stewardship Ministry Team has begun assembling a leadership team for the three-year Capital Appeal / Debt Reduction Campaign which the Council formally author-ized in October. This effort will carry the theme Strengthening Faith Together, and will be guided by the consulting firm of Mark Davy & Associates. Information for members will begin appearing in late January, and the bulk of the effort will take place in February and March.

As previously approved by the Council, the Youth Team and the Children’s Ministry Team have agreed to “swap” two rooms (six-month trial period) in order to give the Youth Ministry a larger space and better accommodate the growing number of teens in our Youth activities. The “swap” will take place during the week between Christ-mas and New Year’s.

Farmington Lutheran Church helps to support the Garland Hall Children’s Home in An-chovy, Jamaica. Each year a trip is taken in February by vol-unteers from a number of differ-ent churches to make repairs to

the living quarters and to provide the children and staff with “Christmas in February” and a day outing including a movie and lunch. The confirmation mentor groups from FLC each sponsor a child from Garland Hall and provide them with clothing, shoes and a toy or two. In December of each year, 2-3 people make a trip to Jamaica to determine what projects will be taken on dur-ing the week in February. The following is a report provided by Pastor Tom Nyman on this “scouting” trip.

Dan Froiland and Tom Nyman had a productive trip to Garland Hall Children's Home. They arrived in Jamaica on Monday, De-cember 6 at Montego Bay and were met by Mission Jamaica Di-rector, Jeff Peterson.

On Tuesday they purchased birthday cake and ice cream for the children and staff. Gwen's birthday was a few weeks ago, and Kimoya Smith's birthday is Dec. 7.

We discovered that Long Hill Road, the road from Montego Bay to Anchovy where Garland Hall Children's Home is located, is still suffering from the effects of the tropical storm that took two lives on that road. It is washed out in placers and driving is a bit treacherous - even by Jamaican standards.

At Garland Hall Children's Home, we were welcomed by Gwen Woodit, the Administrator and we discussed the chidren,

conditions in Jamaica in general and conditions at the Orphanage in particular.

There are currently 30 children at the Home.We did a walk around to see how previous projects had held up.

We discussed our Sunday outing with Gwen. One of the propos-als was to take the children to the beach on Sunday, have a wor-ship service there, enjoy some time in the water, have lunch there, and then return to Garland Hall Children's Home for Christmas in February. Gwen was enthusiastic about this proposal.

We took pictures of the children and staff who were available. (Photos available for viewing on Global Missions Bulletin Board) We assessed the possible projects and prioritized them. We took notes and pictures of the projects.

We left Gwen money for a fun day field trip. for water, and a little extra for emergencies. Garland Hall Children's Home has been out of water for some time. Apparently a pump that brings the water from the road up the hill is burned out. They use rain water from the cistern arrangement we built (with help from Rube Goldberg) a few years ago. However, they have to truck in water for normal consumption.

All in all, it was a very good trip and we will be ready for our February 2-9, 2011 Mission Trip. Thanks to all who supported us with prayers and Garland Hall Children's Home with financial gifts.

Note to Missionaries: Compact florescent bulbs are expensive in Jamaica. If we each brought one or two, we could impact their electric bill.

Blessings, Tom Nyman
