OWATONNA — e latest in agricultural technology will be on display when the North American Farm and Power Show returns to the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna March 19-21.
“Agriculture has changed over the years, and the North American Farm and Power Show has grown to meet these challenges,” said Steve Guenthner, show manager for the expo.
And what will be the cutting edge agricul-tural technology that will be on display at the expo?
In a word, drones.e drones — their actual names are “un-
manned aerial vehicles” or UAVs — are aircra without pilots that can have cameras attached to them, allowing those who operate them, such as farmers, to get a bird’s-eye view of their elds.
“It’s a big subject,” Guenthner said, “when you look at drones and what they can do. It’s a labor-saving device.”
Guenthner said that the cameras on the drones can help farmers identify patches of dry soil in their elds or places where the ground is
too wet and in need, perhaps, of tiling. ey can also help farmers see where weeds are growing.
In the past, the only ways farmers might have been able to identify such things would be to physically walk the elds.
“But why walk the eld when you can y over it in about half the time,” Guenthner said. “It’s unbelievable in the number of footsteps it can save.”
Not only will there be exhibitors that will be showing the latest in technology at the expo, but a special educational session will be held at 2:40 p.m. ursday, March 19, specically on the use of drones in agricultural, led by Dan Kaiser of the University of Minnesota Exten-sion Service.
at seminar is just one of several seminars, all free-of-charge, that will take place over the course of the three-day expo.
is year marks the 13th year that Tradexpos — the Austin, Minnesota-based company that puts on the North American Farm and Power Show, as well as other agricultural trade shows around the county — has brought the show to Owatonna.
Farm and Power Show keeps farmers up-to-date on latest technology
Those attending this year’s North American Farm and Power Show at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna will be able to see the booths of 236 exhibitors this year, event organizers say. The event runs Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 21. (Press file photo) See SHOW on 5

It’s been a relationship that has been good for Tradexpos and for the city of Owatonna.
Guenthner rst brought the expo to Steele County a er having held it in the Cities — a place that he said simply wasn’t conducive to bringing in the sort of clientele that typically attends such a show.
“We needed to get out of Minneapolis,” he said. “We needed a more rural setting where farmers were willing to come to the show.”
Even something so simple as free parking could be a draw, Guenthner said, particularly when one considers how much the farmers were paying for parking up in Minneapolis.
So when he found the Four Seasons Centre on the Steele County Fairgrounds, Guenthner knew he had what he wanted — a nice-sized center with a lot of parking.
Make that “free” parking. And the expo has been successful, averag-
ing 25,000-plus attendees every year for the three-day event. Last year, it was even greater, breaking a record with just short of 30,000 people in attendance over the three days.
“It’s a good spring show, there’s no way
around it,” he said.In part, that’s because of when the show
falls — in mid-March when Minnesota farm-ers are itching to get out in their elds. And so, as the weather starts to turn warmer, but the farmers are still waiting for snow to melt or the ground to thaw, the expo gives them a chance to get o the farm for a while and yet still be thinking about farming.
And the exhibitors — 236 in all this year — love it, Guenthner said, because they are able to establish some good leads on potential customers for their products. ey may not sell something that day, but they might a week or two down the line. Or a month. Or a year even. But the leads, they say, are good.
In fact, the expo is so good that exhibitors are clamoring to be a part of the show.
“I’ve got a waiting list with another 140 booths wanting to get in,” Guenthner said. “I could ll another building if I had the room.”
Although a number of the exhibitors are returning from past expos, Guenthner said that at least a dozen exhibitors will be new to the show.
2014 was a record-breaking year for the North American Farm and Power Show with just short of 30,000 in attendance over the three days of the event. (Press fi le photo

“It’s always nice to have new ones to keep the show fresh,” he said.
In addition to the seminars and the booths, there will be a number of special events as well.
America’s Farmers Grow Communities will be making presentation of $2,500 checks to six area organizations. e program, spon-sored by the Monsanto Foundation, seeks to improve lives in rural communities through farmer-directed donations. Launched in 2010, the program allows farmers to enter to win $2,500 for their favorite nonpro t or-ganizations, such as 4-H, FFA, schools, re departments, food pantries and more. One winner is selected in each of the 1,324 eligible counties across 40 states.
At 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 20, the pre-sentations will be made. Recipients will be Hayfield High School in Dodge County, nominated by Sheryl Wohlers; Catholic Charities in Freeborn County, nominated by Brian Bias; Adam’s Swimming Pool in Mower County, nominated by Craig Hanson; Brains Together for a Cure in Olmstead County,
nominated by Jessica omas; Boy Scouts of Medford in Steele County, nominated by Mark Ihlenfeld; and Waseca FFA in Waseca County, nominated by Scott Singlestad.
Also, as in years past, the Minnesota FFA Foundation will hold a silent auction throughout the three-day expo, with bid-ding closing at 3 p.m. Saturday. e items will be provided by the exhibitors and all funds raised will go to support the Minnesota FFA Foundation Scholarship Program.
And Ag Power Enterprises Inc. will again furnish a 19-hp John Deere D110 Lawn Trac-tor — a $1,699 value — as an attendee grand prize. e drawing will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 21, in the main lobby of the Four Seasons Centre. ose attending the farm show are encouraged to sign up.
Show times are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21.
ere is no admission charge and parking is free on the Steele County Fairgrounds.

One of the materials we produce at our quarries is agricultural lime; which we use to spread on elds to increase the crop yields and income for farmers. Agricultural lime neutralizes the acid in the soil; which increases the crop yield. Excessive soil acidity can have a disastrous affect on crop production. Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products can spread lime on elds at a minimum rate of 2 ton per acre; but we can apply more as needed. We use spreader trucks to apply the lime to the elds; the trucks haul approximately 15 tons per load. Please call Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products for more information.
Call 507-635-3441 for details about our Agricultural Lime Spreading.
