POMI exercise (2012)
• Several models applied to Po valley
Lombardy region.
• After several adjustments and several
scenarios simulated normalized
results are similar!
We learn from inter-comparisons
QUESTION:
How to deal with the variability of model responses to emission
changes?
PROPOSAL:
An inter-comparison platform: To address the issue of the sensitivity of
model responses to emission changes, in particular to assess, discuss,
explain and minimize model discrepancies.
CT9 Platform | objective
Platform intended to benchmark
and understand differences
among modelling system
responses to emission changes
• Wide set of cities in Europe (mostly EU capitals)
plus a few regions were defined.
• Main pollutants: PM, NO2 and O3
• Addressing both episodes and yearly averages
• Theoretical scenarios
• Intended both to local & European scale
modelling systems
• Platform rather than an exerciseintention is not to compare cityresponses among themselves but tocompare model results over a given city

CT9 Platform proposal | steps
1. Generate EU-wide results with episode scenarios
In progress
2. Generate EU-wide results with long term scenarios
Done
3. Upload local results (region/city) for comparison
In progress
4. Build an visualization interface
Done
5. Assessment and understanding of differences
Waiting for additional results
6. Build processes to allow downloading specific city data
(BC, emissions, meteorology) for sensitivity analysis.
To do
CT9 Platform proposal | steps
This inter-comparison platform would allow:
- understanding the variability of
models responses to emissions changes
- guide member states/cities in the
application of emission reduction
measures:
• Model system vs model system
(same/different scale)
• Model vs model
(with similar input data)
• Model version vs. model version
Results example and comparison indicators

𝛼 =∆𝐶𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦
𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝛼
𝛼
𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 𝐹𝑈𝐴 %reduction
Similar results mean
a linear response

CT9 Platform proposal | NOTES
• Important to have model developers on board (local and European scales)
• The JRC has run EU-wide simulations with EMEP and will possibly do with WRF-CHEM to
populate the platform but other EU-wide with similar/other models/versions are welcome.
• Very important to get local scale modelling groups simulating their cities.
• (suggestions from some groups): inter-comparison up to the street level later stage
