Dear Bellevue Downtown Reader,
As our summer wanes, leaves fall and air turns crispy and cool, you have a bounty of ways to warm up your days and nights in the DTB. This issue highlights many extraordinary fall events, from the fundraisers in support of great local causes to The Bellevue Collection’s Fashion Week to spooktacular Halloween festivities.
Downtown Bellevue proudly welcomes the biennial Bellwether Sculpture Exhibition, featuring the work of 32 artists displayed in public spaces across Downtown. Take advantage of lunchtime guided art walks through the city; see p. 12 for the details. Head over to the Bellevue Botanical Garden to stroll through its changing colors and rock-sculpted waterfalls and over the suspension bridge.
For many of us, the season brings on cravings satisfied only by a locally-sourced, harvest-inspired fall menu. Our favorite Downtown restaurants will serve
up delectable dishes made with fresh ingredients from Pacific Northwest farms. Visit the Bellevue Farmers Market while you can! Not only can you chow down at one of the vendors or fill your baskets with beautiful seasonal items, you can donate fresh and canned food via baskets at the market’s booth.
On a final note, we encourage you to make Downtown Bellevue your stay and play destination for all of your back-to-school shopping and entertainment needs. There’s no better place, and we’ve avoided this word until now: cornucopia. Enjoy the options!

Fill your weekend with fun! Downtown Bellevue offers something for everyone whether you’re planning a weekend with family, friends or flying solo. Kick back and relax at the spa or hit the ground running for an afternoon at the Bellevue Botanical Garden — a day of adventure awaits from dawn to dusk!
Fresh Air FunBask in Bellevue’s natural, outdoor beauty while exploring the
53-acre Bellevue Botanical Garden. Meditate in the Alpine Rock
Garden or delight in fall’s rainbow of colors in the Dahlia Display. A
leisurely, half-mile stroll from the Visitor’s Center takes you across
a sweeping ravine and suspension bridge. Hungry after your stroll?
Head to 99 Park Restaurant for brunch, lunch or dinner. Celebrate
the abundance of the season fresh on your plate. Farm-fresh flavors
range from flaky salmon to San Juan halibut and off-the-vine,
heirloom tomatoes. Grab a seat on the patio or enjoy the outdoors
inside — the furniture is made from local, reclaimed wood!
Romance RevelryLove is in the air! Start the day with your sweetheart at Fran’s
Chocolates in Old Bellevue. Sip an iced, Venezuelan dark drinking
chocolate while savoring the sunshine thanks to outdoor seating.
When temperatures drop, head inside for a Tea & Chocolate tasting
or sample handmade truffles, chocolate-covered fruits and figs
from the confection case. Fran’s new seasonal collections promise
something new for every romantic mood. Let the good times roll
at Lucky Strike! It’s a swanky, adult update to your best teenage
memories — bowl a few games, hit the dance floor, test your arcade
game skills and refuel with one of their hand-crafted cocktails. End
your date night with dinner at Black Bottle. The gastropub is perfect
for a laid back, cozy meal of shared plates ranging from avocado
fries to flatbreads, gourmet tacos and sweet treats.
Brunch & BFFsPlan a day of pampering with your BFFs! Yuan Spa is a sanctuary
of relaxation from massage to hydrotherapy and manicures. All spa
packages include a complimentary lunch and guests are welcome to
bring their own wine or champagne — a toast to tranquility! After,
spend the afternoon exploring Old Bellevue. Gilbert’s on Main is

to sesame and poppy seeds, garlic and onion — or indulge in their
legendary Matzo Ball soup. Head down the block for some retail
therapy. A handblown glassybaby is a perfect gift with choices such
as “Friendship,” “BFF” and “Cherish.” Around the corner, a friendship
fashion moment awaits you at clothing boutique La Ree. Whether
you’re looking for weekend essentials or something for a night on
the town, La Ree offers an outfit for every occasion.
All in the FamilyFrom tots to the young at heart, Bellevue is a virtual playground
of adventures. KidsQuest Children’s Museum is a wonderland of
fun with regular exhibits such as puppet theater, train table, face
painting and pirate palooza. Special events include the Halloween
Spooktacular (October 24) and regular Parents’ Nights Out with
educational themes and special activities for kids — Black Light
Science (September 21), Creepy Chemistry (October 19) and
Fossil Discovery (November 16). When hunger inevitably strikes,
Lunchbox Laboratory is guaranteed to satisfy every appetite. The
kid’s menu offers kid-sized burgers, grilled cheese and homemade
corndogs. Older kids will relish the chance to build their own burger
with fixings ranging from cream cheese to fried eggs. Throw in a
side of housemade tots or Mac Du Jour and the only thing left will
be a post-dinner nap!
Game DaysIt’s that time of year again — football season! If you are unable to
make it to CenturyLink Field, Downtown Bellevue has many great
football watching venues. At 520 Bar and Grill their seven TVs
are always tuned in to the Seahawks and Huskies games. Every
Thursday during football season swing by to see (and hear) the live
broadcast of The Mike Holmgren Show, airing 3 – 5 p.m. on 950
KJR-AM. They take reservations and serve their happy hour menu
during games. Bellevue Brewing Company has a 19’x10’ projection
wall and 6 additional monitors for viewing pleasure. During the
game enjoy one — or two — of their highly anticipated fall beers
including a new KZOK beer, Fresh Hop Ale and Double Red IPA.
Plan ahead and reserve their hospitality room for private viewing.
Have fun, be safe and arrive early to fully enjoy your game day!

For many people, planning dinner is more complicated than restaurant reservations or grocery store trips. Thousands of Bellevue community members do not know where their next meal will come from. In 2015, Hopelink — a nonprofit serving those in need — served nearly 6,000 individuals at their Bellevue Foodbank and Emergency Services Center.
“Many people say how they never thought they’d personally be in
need,” says Kris Betker, of Hopelink. “It’s amazing how quickly life
can change. You can lose your job, become sick or just become
unable to make ends meet.”
Learn about organizations feeding those in need and how you
can help.
HopelinkHopelink’s Bellevue location is its second largest of five Puget
Sound locations. Clients include all ages with a particular emphasis
on school-aged children during summer months. According to
Betker, nearly 20% of Bellevue children qualify for free or reduced
lunch and breakfast. During school breaks, this leaves many kids
hungry. Hopelink accepts donations with a particular need for non-
perishable foods such as peanut butter and canned goods, which
stores are less likely to donate. Hope-Link.org.
Bellevue LifeSpringFounded in 1911, LifeSpring has served Bellevue for 105 years. Their
Emergency Food and Basic Needs Pantry delivers groceries directly
to households. All donations are welcome, but contact LifeSpring if
you’re interested in focused help. LifeSpring endeavors to serve all
food needs from cultural to dietary, allergies and more. They also
sponsor the Breaktime-Mealtime program serving children boxed
breakfasts and lunches during school breaks. During the 2015–2016
school year 128,000 meals were provided. For $25, a child is fed for a
week. To learn more about Adopt-a-Box, visit BellevueLifeSpring.org.

Thursday market averages over 40 vendors representing farmers,
bakers, egg producers and more. Donation crates overflow with

lettuce, eggplant, tomatoes, raspberries, peaches, bread, jam
and more. The total food donated since the program’s inception
exceeds 66,000 pounds. “Especially operating in Bellevue, there
are misconceptions that it’s a well-to-do area and everyone can
afford food. There are many people in need and everyone deserves
access to good food,” says Natalie Evans, market manager. A
new program was introduced in 2016. The community is now
encouraged to donate food via public bins at the farmers market.

Seastar Restaurant and John Howie SteakChef John Howie is passionate about eradicating hunger. For 14
years, Howie, his family, friends and a volunteer staff host 400-500
individuals for an elegant Thanksgiving meal at Seastar at no charge
to guests. He partners with community organizations such as
Bellevue LifeSpring, Hopelink, YMCA and more to extend invitations
to those in need. He also leads the Kick Hunger Challenge for Food
Lifeline. In partnership with the Seattle Seahawks, he raises money
for local food banks. In addition to fundraising dinners and auctions,
individuals can visit his restaurants for periodic cocktail and food
promotions with proceeds benefiting the cause. For updates and
details, visit JohnHowieSteak.com or SeastarRestaurant.com.
Homeward Pet Adoption CenterFamilies lacking food often extends to hungry pets. “The food
banks we work with estimate that 90% of the families utilizing their
services have pets,” says Terri Inglis, executive director, Homeward
Pet. “They’re also struggling to feed their furry friends and will
often feed their pets before themselves.” In 2015, Homeward Pet
donated upwards of 50,000 pounds of pet food to Puget Sound
food banks. Needs include dry kibble, canned food and even kitty
litter. Even half-used, opened bags of dry food are welcome —
donate rather than discard food if your pet changes tastes, diet or
develops allergies. For donation locations and further details, visit
HomewardPet.org.

incredible it was to see my work on display.
What were the challenges?
The most challenging part was deciding
which designs to put into the show.
How did you feel when you won?
At first, I didn’t realize that they had even
called my name. I was in total shock when
I realized I had won, since I was competing
with so many incredible designers. The rest
of the night was an amazing blur of talking
to people, interviews, and photos.
What kind of advice would you give to
those interested in pursuing fashion
design?
I would have to say that if fashion design
is your passion, you should go for it. It’s
difficult, and the hours are long, but it’s
completely worth it. They say that if you
love what you do, you will never work a day
in your life, and I believe this 100 percent.
How has the past year been after winning
the runway show? What have you been up
to recently?
The year since winning the show has
been amazing. I showed at FashioNXT in
Portland and my work has been featured
in numerous magazines and blogs, and I
have had the privilege to work with many
amazing photographers. Recently I have
been focusing on setting up my own
manufacturing which will allow me to
both expand my custom line, as well as
develop a line that I can wholesale to bridal
boutiques across the country.
The illustrious Fashion Week at The Bellevue Collection offers an avenue to experience the fashion world in a Pacific Northwest setting.
To kick off fashion week, The Bellevue
Collection will host its 5th annual
Independent Designer Runway Show
where featured upcoming designers
showcase their collections and compete
for a cash prize courtesy of the Kemper
Freeman Family and The Bellevue
Collection. Six months prior to this fashion
showdown, select local designers are
placed in a mentorship program designed
to develop their unique style and refine
their technique through the guidance of
a panel of fashion industry insiders. The
winning designer will have a look from
their collection on display in a Fashion
Frame at Bellevue Square.
The last designer who had one of their
looks featured in the Fashion Frame was
Phuong Nguyen. After a year filled with
opportunity and growth, Nguyen chatted
with us about her experience and her bridal
line, Dream Dresses by P.M.N.
How did you get your start in the fashion
industry? What sparked your passion for
fashion?
I have been interested in fashion as long
as I can remember, even as a young child.
After graduating from the Art Institute of
Seattle, I didn’t know what niche I wanted
to get into until I designed two gowns for
my own wedding. The gowns were so
amazing that many of my guests
thought I should start designing them
full-time, and thats how Dream Dresses by
P.M.N. was born.
What were the most exciting parts
of your experience in The Bellevue
Collection’s Independent Designer
Runway Show?
I think that seeing my gowns on display
at The Bellevue Collection was the most
exciting part. Having shopped (and even
worked) at The Bellevue Collection for
quite some time, it is hard to describe how

Ask Jesse Canedo what he does for a living
and he’ll tell you he is a “business advocate
supporting everyone from first time
business owners to global companies.”
Canedo moved from Texas a little over a
year ago after landing his job at the City
of Bellevue. He had never been to the
Pacific Northwest, but the region seemed
to fit his love for the outdoors, and he says
Downtown is the perfect urban setting
for his lifestyle. Canedo spoke to us about
what he loves about Downtown and his
hopes for the city.
What do you love most about being the
City’s Economic Development Manager?
The thing I love about my job is the breadth
of people I get to interact with. There’s
this incredible amount of energy here and
it’s great to be a resource to these new
businesses and tap into that energy.
Why did you choose to live in Downtown
Bellevue?
I love urban neighborhoods and I wanted
to be in Downtown Bellevue to be a user
of the product that I’m marketing and
selling. It’s close to work—I’m lucky in my
professional career that my commute has
always been less than 15 minutes long.
Today, I have a leisurely 10 minute walk to
the office.

BE OUR NEXT URBANITEDo you live and work in Downtown Bellevue? Email [email protected] and tell us your place of residence, employer and Downtown Bellevue story.
What makes Downtown Bellevue unique?
The energy here is constantly changing
and growing. There’s still this half-finished
canvas and untapped opportunity to
create new experiences and traditions in
Downtown Bellevue.
What are your hopes for the city?
Bellevue’s already on a great trajectory
and a lot of the things I’m hoping for are
already coming true. But I’d like to see the
city truly embrace its place as a video game
development hub. Maybe even have a
video game museum.
What would you like to see more of?
I know the transportation department is
working on this, but I’d like to see more
bike infrastructure. I’m a casual bike rider
and so it would be nice to do that around
Downtown Bellevue more.
Ideal weekend?
I’m a huge coffee guy so on Saturdays I
drink coffee and catch up on reading. I
probably caffeinate on a Saturday enough
for the whole week ahead. I really like the
coffee and the set up at Honor Coffee.
Favorite Happy Hour?
Daniel’s Broiler or El Guacho.
Favorite Event?
The Bellevue Arts Fair weekend was really
awesome. It’s huge! I took my family there
when they were visiting. My mom loves art.
Canedo is looking forward to seeing Downtown grow
into its potential and he’s eager to work with new
businesses. If you’re an aspiring business owner, he
encourages you to get in touch via email at
[email protected] or on LinkedIn.
