Pushing the limits with new alloys

For Petrochemical applications involving temperaturesbetween 650° C and 1 100° C (and beyond), heatresisting alloys must ensure creep strength, carburisationand corrosion resistance, creep elongation and withstandthe effects of cyclic temperatures and changes of theoperating environment if properly designed. Moreover, maintenance concerns such as weldability after ageingare also of importance.

The main applications for centrifugally cast tubes in heatresistant alloy are the following:• Steam reforming, for the production of syngas,

hydrogen, ammonia or methanol. Process conditionsare up to 30 bar (435 psi) and up to 1 000° C(1,832° F).

• Steam cracking, for the production of ethylene. Processconditions are of a few bars of pressure only, buttemperature sometimes reaches above 1 150° C(2,012° F).

Latest improvements consist of:Improved creep properties of a high carburizationresistant alloy by adding Ta or improved carburizationresistance by adding Al.

Specific grades are developed for reformers, such asXOR (25/35 Nb Ta), of for crackers, such as 40XO(30/40 Nb TaAl), being a creep resistance improvementto the current 35/45 material, with similar corrosionresistance properties.

Thermal shock resistance & weldability after ageing arekey features which those new alloys also accommodate.

Finned tubesManoir Industries is using a new developed machiningprocess allowing to improve the heat transfer for ourVulcan tubes. It leads to an increase of the tube IDsurface by more than 25%.

Furnaces equipped with Vulcan tubes have been alreadydelivered in Italy, in the US, in India and partial furnacein Canada. Vulcan internally finned cast tubes are anadequate substitute to current extruded tubes from amechanical properties perspective.

The use of finned tubes increases tube life as tube metaltemperatures are lower with an identical production ratesince heat transfer is higher. Energy savings also occur.

A brand new production unit in peopleRepublic of China enables to offer a betteranswer to the petrochemical market needsin and outside China. This new plant islocated in Yantai, Province of Shandong.

Manoir industries’s anti coking coatingfor ethylene producersThis development offers coking resistance with theelimination of catalytic coke and a low adherence of amorphous coke.

The larger benefits of a coated coil in an gas crackerconsist in extended run lengths, conversionimprovements and higher throughput. It also protectsthe tubes from carburization, improve their hot erosion& thermal shock resistance compared to uncoatedtubes.

Additional improvements of such a coating are alsothe ductility, the thermal stability, the service longevityand cost savings. Some furnaces equipped with thiscoating are operational.
