By Sam EricksonA dependable car is easy to forget about. If

you drive every day, it can be easy to stop think-ing about the car as a complex mechanicaldevice and to think of it more like a television-atool you use when you need it. With winterweather approaching, it's really time to startthinking about safety and preparing for the

change in the seasons. There are a lot of movingparts to check on a car, but, without good tires, the safety of a car might be seriously compro-mised. There are just a few simple steps to take toensure you've got quality tires for the inclementweather approaching.

First, check the tire pressure. A monthly checkis best, but when it's cold outside, you'll want tocheck the pressure more often. Fill your tires tothe recommended level, which should be visibleon the tire or on the inside of the driver's door, thenext time you are at the gas station. Keeping tiresat their recommended pressure keeps them work-ing at maximal efficiency and improves gasmileage.

Many people have heard of tire rotation butdon't actually know what it is. Most experts rec-ommend that tires should be rotated every 5,000to 8,000 miles. This rotation is important becauseit evens out the wear on your tires. Based on yourdriving habits, where you drive, what the roadsare like and many other factors, some tires can

wear more than others. Tire rotation will ensurethat the tires wear evenly and you won't have toreplace one before the others. All you will haveto do is move the wheels from one position on thecar to another to keep them in good shape.

Tread is probably your next step. Visuallyinspect your tires and the tread. If you can see thebars that run across the tires, it is definitely time to

have the tires replaced. Snow or winter tires area great option for those that have significantsnowfall to deal with every year. An old trick is tocheck the tires with a penny. If you insert thehead of the Abraham Lincoln picture and part ofit is hidden by the groove, you are on the safeside. If you can see his entire head, it's time toreplace those tires. Finally, you'll want to listen toyour car at highway speeds for any irregularnoises, grinding or bumping sounds. If you dosense something, have it checked out by a pro-fessional.

Your tires are your first line of defense againstinclement weather and road conditions in thewinter. They should be checked regularly to

ensure you get the maximum life from them andthey are giving you maximum contact with theroad. Dealing with tires isn't a glamorous part ofcar care maintenance, but keeping your tires ingood shape will save you money in the long runand ensure your safety.

By Sam EricksonOctober is Fall Car Care Month. With the

imminent onset of winter, it's time to give yourcar a full system review. This handy checklistcan let you know what you should do in orderto get the most out of your car. If you've onlygot a short amount of time, follow these inorder to maximize your efforts.

Brakes_Heat and increased travel duringsummer can wear out the rotors, shoes, pads, drums and calipers on your brakes. These arecomplicated systems. While some people feel

comfortable handling this inspection and anyrepairs themselves, other less-knowledgeablecar owners rely on their mechanics to inspectand replace these.

The Engine: If your car runs rough on theroad or when idling, it's best to have it checkedout by a mechanic. Winter is a time when youare relying more on your car, so it's worth theinvestment.

Tires:Check the tires for their tread life andany worn or bald spots. Rotating tires regular-ly can prevent uneven wearing and increasethe life of every tire on your car. Checking forthe right tire pressure is important to do every

month, but it is even more important as youmove into winter.

Battery: Increased battery problems in thewinter are actually often the result of the sum-mer heat and extended driving. Corroded bat-tery posts or a bulging case can indicate prob-lems. Professional tools are needed to test the

juice in your battery.Wipers: Your wipers are your key to visi-

bility, and they are easy to replace and rela-tively inexpensive. You can visually inspectyour wipers for pits and cracks or you cancheck them as they work. If they have goodcontact and clear water cleanly, you probablywon't need to replace them for the winter.

Fluid Levels: Your car contains several dif-ferent fluids: power steering, brake, oil andwindshield wiper, to name a few. Check thelevels in your owner's manual and make sure

to top off these before the season. It won't takelong and it won't be expensive. If you noticeany very low levels, it might be time to have aprofessional check for leaks.

Belts and Hoses: Belts and hoses appear inmany places in a car. Check for cracks in beltsand soft spots in hoses, which often appearnear the clams.

Air Filter: The best thing about an air filteris that it is easy to change. Air filters keep yourcar operating at peak efficiency and give youthe highest fuel efficiency. As cars idle more inwinter, this becomes increasingly important.

Lights: Check the alignment on your head-

lights to make sure you aren't binding otherdrivers and all of your taillights and signals arein good working order. This will make commu-nication easier while on the road and maykeep you from getting pulled over and receiv-ing a ticket.

Few things are more important than good

car care maintenance. Take the time toinspect, check and fix any problems with yourvehicle to ensure you have a safe winter driv-ing season.

By Sam EricksonWith all of the things to keep track of-the bat-

tery life on your phone, the kids' schedules, plansfor the weekend-it can be difficult to cram in all ofthe necessities, like taking good care of your carin the fall season. There are a lot of things to takecare of in your car, but a handy mnemonic to helpyou remember is the four Bs-blades, battery, brakes and belts.

Blades: Wiper blades are your first defense

against accidents because they help you to seeclearly and make smart decisions. Blades can getcracked or warped over time and their housingcases can become unbalanced, leading to poorvisibility. Compound that poor visibility with dan-gerous driving conditions like snow or ice, andyou could have a real problem. Wiper blades areeasy to replace and relatively inexpensive. Youcan pick up a cheap set at almost any store if yourcurrent wipers aren't cleaning up to your stan-dards.

Battery: Heat in summer can actually reduceyour battery life. A visual inspection will show youif your cables have corroded or if there is a prob-lem with contact on the battery posts. Cleaningthese is something that can and should be doneby a professional. A professional mechanic canalso check the battery power and recommendwhether you should have the battery replaced. The last thing you want is to be stuck somewherein the middle of bad weather with a dead battery.

Brakes: Good brakes are essential to the safe

operation of your car, particularly on bad roads. If your brake pedal has a little extra give or goesall the way down to the floor, it is definitely time tohave your brakes looked at by a professional.Sound is often your best indication of how yourbrakes are doing. If there is noise when you applythe brake, like metal on metal, there might be toomuch wear on the disks. If there is a grindingnoise, you might have worn out the rotors or disks.Your best option is to have your car towed to the

shop to prevent any possibility of an accident ifyour brakes are that worn down. Have yourbrakes checked regularly by an expert to avoidthese problems.

Belts (and hoses): There are several differentbelts and hoses in your engine. When the engineis cool, squeeze the hose to check for soft ormushy spots, which often occur around theclamps. You can also look for cracks, bulges orcontamination of any sort with your eyes and withyour hands. If hoses are damaged, replacementshould take place immediately. A busted hose orbelt will leave you stranded on the side of theroad. If you have any questions, have your carinspected by an expert.

The simple fact is that in inclement weatheryou rely more on your car than you do in the sum-mer, and the stakes are higher if there is a failure. There are a lot of things that can be checked inpreparation for the winter, but the simplicity of theFour Bs makes it a really useful way to approachfall car care.

    Driving safely withthe four Bs

By Sam EricksonWinter is the time when most car care

emergencies happen. In the warm days ofspring and summer, few people are con-cerned about the occasional roadside prob-lem. With always-on communication and theproliferation of roadside assistance programs, many people take it for granted that they willbe able to call for help at a moment's notice, regardless of the conditions. Mother Nature, however, has a way of humbling even the mostprepared driver. In winter weather, the stakesare much higher in case of emergencies, par-ticularly in northern parts of the United States.

If your area has inclement weather, be pre-pared to meet any challenges by equippingyour car with an emergency preparedness kit.

The most important things in a car emer-gency are the same things that are importantevery other day: food and water. Water isreally the most critical element. Most peopledon't have loads of extra space in their car,but water can be stored in small drink boxesor pouches in the trunk. Water is also usefulfor sanitation or for taking care of an over-heated car. Food can be a problem becausecars are often exposed to severe tempera-tures, which makes food storage difficult.

Calorie-dense items, which are not perishable, are your best bet. These could include driedfruits, nuts and energy bars designed for hik-ing or camping.

Food and water can provide an importantpsychological boost as well. Many expertshave argued that people who survive stressfulsituations are not necessarily the best pre-pared. The people who overcome these obsta-cles are the ones who believe they can. Whilethey certainly provide physical comfort, foodand water can go a long way toward provid-ing that psychological comfort as well.

Once you've taken care of these essen-

tials, you can look to a few more importantitems. Staying dry and warm will help you pre-serve energy, so blankets and a poncho orraincoat are the next most important things to

get into your kit. A solid multi-tool gives youflexibility without adding too much weight orthe need for extra space, and a first aid kit isessential to take care of any small injuries thatmight occur. If you have kids, consider provid-ing some toys to occupy their time while youwait for help.

Commercial kits are available at big-boxstores, hardware stores and many stores spe-cializing in auto parts. These are often moreexpensive than building a kit yourself, but theyare convenient and can be used as a startingpoint for your kit. Only you can decide whatthe best option is to make sure that you don't

get stuck without assistance. Being preparedin case of an emergency will give you thetools-physical and psychological-to getthrough the ordeal.

Emergency in the car? No problem

Unfortunately, too many of us knowsomeone - a family member, friend or col-league - who is affected by breast cancer. In fact, breast cancer accounts for nearlyone in three cancers diagnosed in U.S.women, according to the American CancerSociety.

Since there is no cure for breast cancer, much more needs to be done in the fightagainst this life-threatening disease.

There are several easy ways you canmake a difference this October, which isBreast Cancer Awareness Month, andbeyond:

Get the Word OutAwareness is crucial to early diagnosis

and timely treatment. Talk to your sisters, mothers, daughters, aunts and friendsabout scheduling annual checkups anddiagnostic tests.

Since genetics can play a factor, sharingyour medical history with your family isespecially important. Use free web servic-es, such as the governments FamilyHealth Portrait tool, available atwww.familyhistory.hhs.gov, to collect thisinformation and help your health careprovider formulate a prevention plan.

Show Your SupportBeyond spreading the word, there are

easy ways you can support the fightagainst breast cancer from your grocerystore list to fundraisers and more.

First, look for your favorite brands thatare giving back to the cause. For example,Nestl Pure Life Purified Water is support-ing The Breast Cancer ResearchFoundation (BCRF) through its Pink Packprogram. Every package of Nestl PureLife Purified Water marked with a pinkribbon represents a donation to BCRF,with a minimum of $750,000 this year.

BCRF is dedicated to breast cancer

research that will ultimately help lead toprevention and a cure. Currently, 91 centsof every dollar spent by BCRF is directed

towards breast cancer research and aware-ness programs, such as one of the grantsthat Nestl Pure Life is helping to fund, aimed at findings drugs to prevent breastcancer in those with the BRCA-mutation.To join Nestl Pure Life in supportingBCRF and make a direct donation sup-porting research efforts, visit www.bcr-fcure.org.

Another easy -- and fun -- way to showyour support and raise funds year round isby participating in walks and runs.Gather a group of friends and family andfind a local walk or race that raises fundsfor an organization tied to research or find-ing a cure. Its a meaningful way to getdirectly involved.

    Healthy LifestyleBCRF-funded research has indicated

that there is a positive relationshipbetween exercise, a healthy lifestyle, andbreast cancer risk.

Among other things, it is important tomaintain a healthy body weight throughexercise and a well-balanced diet. Oneweight maintenance trick is to stay hydrat-ed and eat plenty of fiber-rich foods likealmonds, beans and apples, which makeyou feel full and can help you avoidovereating.
