“WE thank you, Eskom, for helping us finan-cially and helping our families as well.”

Those words were spoken by Kabelo April(18) after receiving a bursary from Eskom atthe Philip Sanders Resort near Bloemfonteinon Saturday.

The soft-spoken Virginia lad, together with19 other students, were awarded bursaries bythe electricity giant to pursue their dreams ofhigher learning. This is in linewith the compa-ny’s strategic commitment to contribute to thesocio-economic development of South Africa.

All bursary recipients were top 20 Free Statematriculants in 2012. They are already enrolledat different institutions across the country.

“We promise that we’ll work hard and makesure that the energy you invested in us will notgo to waste. Tomy fellow students, we have thesupport we need and we should not allow anyroom for error. My advice to you all is that pa-tience, persistence and perspiration make anunbeatable combination for success,” Aprilsaid as he thanked Eskom on behalf of his fel-low students.

“I feel honoured to be awarded such a hugebursary by such a huge company. It is such agreat honour for me. I was happy when I re-ceived a call from theDepartment of Educationto say that Eskom would be funding my stu-dies,” saidApril, who is studying towards aNa-tional Diploma in Building at the Central Uni-versity of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein.

The awards ceremony coincided with the50th anniversary of the Organisation of Afri-can Unity (OAU), which has been transformedinto the African Union (AU) – a day that seeksto promote an integrated, prosperous andpeaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens andrepresenting a dynamic force in the global are-na.

On awarding the bursaries, Public Enter-prise Minister Malusi Gigaba, said: “Our cele-bration today is two-fold. While we celebrateEskom’s 90 years of existence this year, we

would also like to commend our African headsof state for pushing forward the African Ren-aissance agenda.

“Today’s occasion is therefore in line withthe AU’s strategic objective set out a little overa decade ago, to accelerate a forward-lookingagenda that promotes a peaceful and advancedcontinent for all.”

The minister commended Eskom for cele-brating this important milestone by ploughingback to the communities and focusing their at-tention on the youth.

“As we look back at what Eskom hasachieved over the years, albeit some challeng-es, through this bursary programme we wantto reiterate our commitment to the empower-ment of our youth by ensuring that they arearmedwith a powerful tool which is education. We believe that it is only with education thatour youth can make an impactful contributionto the socio-economicdevelopment of our coun-try,” Gigaba said.

He added that the future growth and econom-ic viability of South Africa and its people de-pended to a large extent on the availability ofsufficient and professionally qualified individ-uals.

His sentiments were echoed by Eskom’schairman, Zola Tsotsi, who said that for thepast nine decades his company had been add-ing quality to the lives of South Africans andenabling the country’s economic growth.

“The awarding of these bursaries is just oneof the ways in which we make a difference inthe communities in which we operate.

“As a state-owned company, our perfor-mance is also measured by the overall valuethat we add to the lives of the public.

“Our developmental mandate is about creat-ing a foundation on which South Africa cangrow, helping to transform the lives of a largepercentage of the population that lives in pov-erty,” Tsotsi said.

TateMakgoe, MEC for Education in the FreeState, thanked Eskom for awarding bursariesto deserving students.

MY name is Thabile OrefileMoleko and I was born in Ma-hikeng on 15 January 1994.

My family and I arrived inBloemfontein in 1997 and I attendeda primary school and two highschools in the City of Roses. Iregard my school career as dismal.I was bullied from the age of sevenuntil the age of 15.

The minute I walked through thegates of the primary school Iattended, my persona was misun-derstood. For some reason I wasseen as different from my class-mates. The teachers treated medifferently as though I was disabledor mad. My gr. 1 teacher called mea failure in front of my motherbecause I had come from anAfrikaans nursery school and Istruggled to understand Englishand grasp things such as thealphabet. I would swap lettersaround while I was learning how toread and write.

The gr. 1 teacher convinced mymother that I needed to go to anoccupational therapist which I didfor a few sessions and then stoppedas I suppose it became clear to thetherapist that there was nothingwrong with me.

My gr. 1 teacher created aplatform that allowed my class-mates to start bullying me. Shetreated me unfairly when therewas a quarrel and I would alwaysbe “at fault” no matter the situa-tion.

From then on, I never had avoice.

My second name and mysurname loosely translate to “Hegave us trouble” and the blackgirls would always tease me aboutthat.

I was bullied throughout myprimary school career. I used toattend after-day care and Iremember in gr. 5 during breakthere was a couple of girls thatwas teasing me and ended upthrowing popcorn in my face. Ireported it at home and mymother got involved in thesituation. Little did I know itwould make things worse.

At school there were cliques andthe one clique that made my life aliving hell was the clique of blackgirls and they influenced othercliques to be against me. Theysucceeded in doing so because forseven years I never knew whatfriendship meant.

I was always desolate andisolated and it took a catastrophefor me to be befriended by twogirls.

In high school, which was biggerthan the primary school, all thosegirls who didn’t like me influencedthe new girls at the school and thebullying became more intense.

I fell into a deep depression. I feltworthless and I started practisingself-mutilation and eventuallyattempted to commit suicide but Inever succeeded.

In that depression, I drownedmyself in books and sport and Iexcelled both academically and insport.

I played netball, then laterstarted swimming and the angerwithin those girls became moreintense. They would pass rudecomments such as “since whendoes Thabile get 80% for mathemat-ics”.

I had a goal to swim at theworld’s largest open-water swim-ming race, the Midmar Mile, and

when “the clique” found out, theylaughed at me and told me I wouldnever make it.

I trained really hard and wentfor time trials. I wanted to provethem wrong so badly but I didn’tsucceed, I didn’t make the time atthe time trials.

The next morning the girls werelining the corridors laughing at mesaying I should never attemptdoing things that are “beyond me”.

My hunger to achieve this goalwas deepened and I carried onswimming.

Through my desolation I focusedmore on myself and started writingpoetry and eventually fell in lovewith it.

My cousin encouraged me toshare my poetry in front of theschool.

I did so and the school wasrather shocked that I was capableof writing poetry.

They liked my poetry but stillhated the girl behind the pencil.

In gr. 9 my English teachercriticized my writing, even tryingto crush my dream of becoming anauthor and a journalist. Her harshcriticism didn’t stop me fromwriting.

In 2009, the bullying was at anall-time high and I started becom-ing resistant to people. I justwanted to be on my own and

eventually became so sick fromall the stress that I collapsed infront of my classmates, but theteasing and being laughed atjust continued.

Towards the end of 2009, Irecall crying so hard and beingso deeply hurt as my identitynow became a joke within the

public’s eye. I was now beingcyber-bullied.

A group was created about me onthe social network Facebookentitled I know of someone that’sreally annoying.

I didn’t know how to deal withthat intense pain so I went to theprincipal, but he didn’t want tointervene because he said it wouldjust make matters worse.

In 2010 I changed schools, notbecause I was running away, but Iwanted to feel how it felt to behappy in an academic environmentand to go to school like any otherchild without fearing anything.

My goal was partially achievedas some of the kids at the newschool tried to bully me but theydid not succeed as I had alreadybeen through far worse at myprevious school.

My experiences at school led tomy passion for writing and in 2010an article I had written waspublished on the front page of theExpress newspaper. I also becamea published author with three ofmy poems being published in ajoint anthology, ViaGrapevine,

which was compiled by a Frenchauthor, Brigitte Poirson, andPhinithi Nate IV Ntelekoa. I alsorecited two of my poems on KovsieFM and one of the poems waspublished in ViaGrapevine in 2013.

I swam at the provincial aquaticschampionships in 2010 and 2011. In2011 and 2012, I swam the MidmarMile and completed both races andwas even among the medalwinners.

I am sharing my story because ofthe recent incident at Eunice HighSchool which involved violence. Most teenagers go through bullyingand don’t have anyone to talk to sothey resort to self-mutilation,substance abuse, even commitsuicide.

Throughout my school career Iwasn’t aware that I’m beingbullied, I didn’t even know it is acrime. It saddens me that girls andboys go through a similar situationas I have been through and evenworse. Bullying is a crime if youhave been bullied, act now. Don’tprocrastinate, you will live toregret it.

I would like to study MediaStudies and Journalism or Philoso-phy. My goal is to become a writerand my dream is to leave a legacy.*Visit our Facebook page,

THERE have been tributes andmourning on a national level forvarious famous personalities inthe past like politicians, celebri-ties and more. But what I haveexperienced with the death ofthe late Vuyo Mbuli is verydifferent.I get the sense of a particular

intensity in the mourning ofMbuli’s death. He was almost like a personal,

close family member to eachperson in South Africa.Could it be because he was

“personally” in all the homes offamilies every morning? I amnot sure.Perhaps it was because of

these home visits every morningwith the people. Yes, now Iknow why his death is mournedand feels so personal. He was a“family member” of these SouthAfricans. Wow, what a man, what a man.Douglas Colbert, my brother-

College has coursesfor variety of careersA CAREER inbusiness todayrequires a differentset of skills to whatit did a decade ago.

While there willalways be a placefor traditionalqualifications suchas BCom andMarketing, whatthe South Africanbusiness landscapeis looking for isindividuals withstrong leadershipcapabilities thatcan move comfort-ably and competent-ly between all areas– finance, market-ing and manage-ment of an organi-sation.

“Education is notstatic and althoughthere are otherBCom degrees onoffer, our researchshowed that therewas a gap for aqualification thatcovered all theseskills,” said NadineKruger of the

Higher EducationDepartment atBoston CityCampus & BusinessCollege.

“The BostonBCom ManagementMarketing degree isa bachelor’s degreethat equips studentswith the knowledgeand skills for careeropportunities in thefields of business, management andmarketing, focusingon digital market-ing, social mediaand brand manage-ment, all buzzwordsin the marketingcareer fields.”

The coursecontent as well asthe flexibility itoffers individuals ismaking this degreean increasinglypopular choice withstudents becauseregardless ofwhether theeconomy is experi-encing growth ornot, qualifiedentrepreneurs, marketers andmanagers arealways needed.

With the globaland local economystill in the midst ofone of its mostchallenging periodsthis is even morerelevant.

The BComManagementMarketing degreehas been created toproduce the kind ofmanagers andentrepreneursSouth Africa needsto make companiesmore productiveand push them toexplore newopportunities andways of doingbusiness.

An additionalconsequence ofthese tough andchanging economictimes is that

prospective stu-dents, both under-graduate andpost-graduate, areseeking out alterna-tive means tocomplete theirqualifications asidefrom them followingthe traditionalfull-time universityroute.

Whether it isbecause they needto work whilestudying in order tofund their educa-tion, or becausethey are too farfrom a suitableuniversity, orbecause they arealready in a career, but want tofurther or changetheir skills set oracquire a formalqualification, thereare students thatneed the flexibilityof studying parttime.

To alleviate thedownside of this,Boston offers theirdegree with flexiblestudy modes.
