LESSON PLAN

Subject: Chemistry

Form: 4 SN 2

Number of Students: 31

Date of Lesson: 16 July 2012

Time: 10.45 am- 11.55 am

Title of Lesson: Electrochemistry

Title of Experiment: Electrolytes and Non-electrolytes

Learning Objectives:

In the end of the lesson, students can be able to:

1) Classify the substance into electrolytes and non-electrolytes.

Content:

1) Electrolytes and non-electrolytes

Student’s Prior Knowledge:

1) Students have learned about properties of electrolytes and non-electrolytes

Noble Values:

1) Cooperativeness

2) Responsibility

Materials/Resources:

1) Laboratory apparatus

2) Activity module of Chemistry form 4

3) Article of newspaper

Page 2: Experiment of electrolyte and non-electrolyte

Set Induction (5minutes):

Teacher asks students to read an article that she gets from the newspaper. After students read the

article, teacher asks students how the victim gets the electrical shock. From students responds,

teacher later asks students to relate conducting electricity with electrolyte that they have learned

in the topic of Electrochemistry. Teacher later asks whether water is electrolyte or non-

electrolyte. Based on students respond, teacher later ask students to define electrolyte. Then,

teacher tells students that they will handle the experiment of determination of electrolyte and

non-electrolyte.

Development (50 minutes):

Step Teacher Activity Student Activity Teacher Materials/Notes

Step 1

(10 minutes)

Teacher divides

students into four

groups which two

groups will do the

experiment for molten

and the other two

groups will do for

aqueous solution.

Teacher later

demonstrates to the

students to setup the

electrolytic cell.

Students should

observe teachers’

demonstration carefully

to setup the

electrochemical cell.

Teacher reminds students to carefully

setup the cell.

Step 2

(5 minutes)

Teacher observes

students setup the

electrolytic cell.

Students should setup

the experiment well

under teachers’

observation.

Step 3

(15 minutes)

Teacher observes

students doing the

experiments.

Students should handle

the experiment

Teacher should reminds students to:

1) Make sure that the connecting

wires are kept away from the

carefully.

Students should record

the observation of the

experiments in the

table.

flame.

2) Molten naphthalene, C10H8 is

flammable and should keep the

flame low when naphthalene

melts.

3) Dispose the lead(II) bromide,

PbBr2 carefully as it is hazardous.

Step 4

(10 minutes)

Teacher tells students

to clean all the

apparatus used and

place them at their

place.

Students should clean

all the apparatus used

and place the apparatus

used at their place.

Step 5

(10 minutes)

Teacher asks students

to share their

observation from the

experiments.

Teacher later discuss

with the students about

their observation from

the experiments.

Student is called to the

front to write on the

white board the

observation from the

experiments.

Students are discussing

within the group based

on the observation to

state that substances

that they used are

electrolytes or non-

electrolytes.

Teacher should guide students to

discuss their observation from the

experiments.

Evaluation (10minutes):

Teacher prepared four different envelopes to the students. Each group should take on one of these different enveloped. Teacher later ask students to discuss and solve the problem given in the enveloped. A representative is called from each group to show the problem solving in front of the class.

Page 4: Experiment of electrolyte and non-electrolyte

Conclusion (5 minutes):

Teacher asks students to give the properties of electrolyte and non-electrolyte.
