Here at HighLives Travel we strongly believe inthe positive contribution tourism can make tosustainable environmental and socialdevelopment within South America. Inparticular, we understand that air travel can behighly damaging to the environment, and so ifwe choose to travel by air, it naturally followsthat we should also make efforts to activelysupport and promote sustainableenvironmental enterprises.
We are the official travel partner of ArBoliviaProject, an initiative founded by TheCochabamba Project, in conjunction withapproximately 1,000 smallholder families, thatfocuses on reforestation and sustainable landuse within the tropical regions of Bolivia.
The root cause of deforestation in Bolivia is thepoverty that leads to slash and burn farming. The ArBolivia Project takes a businessapproach and splits the profits from timberrevenues equally with farmers, rather thanpaying local people a salary and exportingmost of the profit overseas.
This way, the project is far more likely to besustainable, and ultimately successful, byaddressing social and environmental problemswith a business solution.
It takes 25 years and more than £60 for atypical tree to reach sufficient maturity to befelled and exported, which is where ArBoliviarelies on donations. Our project sponsorshipprogramme guarantees a £60 donation forevery person travelling with HighLives. 100% ofdonations go directly to the ArBolivia Project toensure that farmers are paid and supported toenable their trees to grow and avoid slash andburn farming. We also encourage ourcustomers to match this donation, which wefacilitate on their behalf.
The ArBolivia Project has been structured sothat it can be replicated more widely, bothwithin Bolivia and elsewhere and we lookforward to supporting its expansion acrossLatin America in the future.
