What is a Handicap?
• A Handicap is an indication of a player's ability.
• A specific formula is used to compute Handicaps by factoring in a player's score and the difficulty of the course played.

Why would I want a Handicap?• A Handicap allows players of different ability
levels to compete with each other.
• Using Handicaps helps to even the playing field, making the game more fun.
• A Handicap also travels with you. If you play a course that is more difficult than
your home course, your Handicap will be higher. On an easier course, your Handicap will be lower.
This has to do with a Course’s Slope. Mid-Range Slope is 112; Winagamie is 91;
MidVallee is 115; and Chaska is 129.

Why would I want a Handicap?• For example, if a player with a 20 Handicap has a
score of 100, her net score is 80 (100 - 20 = 80), while a player with a 25 Handicap and a score of 105 also has a net score of 80 (105 – 25 = 80).

When should I get a Handicap?
• If you are just learning the game of golf and spend the majority of your time taking lessons or practicing, then it may be too early for you to get a Handicap.
• Once you start playing 9- or 18-hole rounds, you should establish your Handicap.

How do I get a Handicap?
• EWGA provides a Handicap service as a part of your membership.
• This is included with the EWGA GolfNet 21 that is offered to every member affiliated with an EWGA Chapter.
• In order to use this service you must first activate your GN21 account.
• You then must enter a minimum of five 18-hole scores or ten 9-hole scores to establish your Handicap.

When using the “Enter Scores” option, always remember the following:
1. You must select “Manual Entry” from the “Course List” drop down menu if the course (or tee) cannot be found in the “Course Finder” list.
2. You must use the Equitable Stroke Chart (ESC).
• ESC does not affect your real score; it is just for Handicap purposes.
3. For a manual entry, if you are entering a score for a 9-hole round, be sure to cut the rating in half but use the full slope when you enter your information.
