HAPPY MAY, ESTERO!
I don’t know about you, but I am feeling a little more relaxed each month. That’s the great thing about living in ‘Paradise’. We have the choice to do as much or as little as suits us at the moment. No pressure, just doin’ whatever we enjoy!
There is plenty still to do. And with a few more of our seasonal residents gone, we can do what we enjoy a little easier and certainly quicker. We still have golf, the beaches, wonderful restaurants that are not quite as crowded, three malls full of shopping ideas, music and theatre entertainment both north and south of us and of course, FGCU spring and summer sports and our new Florida Tarpons.
Speaking of FGCU sports, our cover story this month is a tribute to the women’s basketball team. These ladies delivered some of the most exciting sports moments that we have ever seen! What a tremendous season they had this year. I congratulate Coach Karl Smesko on his most successful 10th year and to the entire team that took all of us to new heights. You provided us with great memories to cherish. And to the fi ve graduating seniors, we wish you the best that life has to offer as you set out on your individual journeys. We’d love to hear from you from time to time.
This month’s community spotlight is on the husband/wife dentistry team of Owen and Claudie Delgado-Feeney, residents of Stoneybrook. Learn about this wonderful family oriented practice and their
accomplishments. I am so proud to call them neighbors!
This month’s featured restaurant is the Blue Water Bistro at Coconut Point Mall. It has been reeling in customers with its impressive array of fresh catches and shellfi sh, plated perfectly with made-from-scratch sauces. The colorful dishes they create are as pleasing to the eyes as they are to the palate.
From traveling in Vietnam to unique and classy Mothers Day gift ideas and more, this month’s issue has something for everyone.
To all of the mother’s in our community, I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day. May you receive all of the love, attention, respect and appreciation that you deserve.
And fi nally, to all of our service men and women in uniform and our treasured veterans, we salute you and your valor and courage that keep us safe. You will be in our hearts and prayers this coming Memorial Day, and always.
So until next month, remember to “Enjoy the Lifestyle.”

Those of us who have pets are very familiar with the guilt we feel when our busy lifestyles take us away from Fido for hours at a time.
But we might feel a little bit better about the long hours apart if we knew that our dogs were at home watching TV programs that will enrich their lives.
At least that’s the premise behind DOG TV (www.dogtv.com) a new 24-hour channel cable TV channel that aims to keep canines entertained for hours.
The channel features special programming developed using research from pet behavior experts.
The company has worked with animal behavior researchers over the past few years in order to develop its content, aimed specifi cally at dogs. According to DOGTV, canines are happier when a television is on and the channel has been tested to ensure it captures a dog’s attention. It will be broadcasting three types of programs — calming sections to reduce animal anxiety, stimulating sections to keep dogs entertained and segments aimed at improving their behavior. The Humane Society of the United States has recognized the channel and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has also accepted its techniques.
Check out the website and call your cable provider for information on how to subscribe.

Let’s face it, shopping for razor blades ranks right up there with life’s least favorite activities.
First, a good blade is very expensive. Second, when you hit your local Walgreen’s or CVS, the blades tend to be locked away making it inconvenient to purchase.
Enter, the Dollar Shave Club. This brilliant idea became a viral
sensation on the Internet this spring with its fun launch video which challenged men and women to throw away their razors for a “@*#**$ great shave.”
The Club not only promises a quality shaving experience, but it also offers a low price ($1, $6 or $9) per month for blades and convenience (blades are shipped directly to your door) every month.
There are three types of blades you can order: The “Humble Twin” for $1 per month plus shipping and handling, the $6 per month “Lover’s Blade” which includes shipping and handling and the “Executive” for $9 per month which includes shipping and handling.
All of the blades include aloe strips and the Executive features six stainless steel blades with Vitamin E to protect your skin.
Visit www.dollarshaveclub.com for more information and to see a fun video which can be a seminar on how to enter a market in a unique, fun and effective way.

Many loyal Estero fans watched in agony as the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) women’s basketball team lost in the fi nal minutes of an overtime heartbreaker against St. Bonaventure in the Eagles’ fi rst appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Competing in post-season play was a major accomplishment for the young program, crowning its tenth season with a conference championship, a perfect 18-0 conference record and an overall record of 29-3.
The team was led by a group of fi ve seniors, along with sophomore Sarah Hansen, who has been named the Atlantic Sun MVP, the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a Full Court Mid-Major All American
h o n o r a b l e mention.
Much credit for the lady Eagles’ success goes to Head Coach Karl Smesko and his team, having
built the FGCU women’s basketball program from scratch and placed the university on the radar among top basketball programs nationwide.
“We made a name for ourselves and hopefully we did a good job of representing our school and letting people know who FGCU is,” said senior Eglah Griffi n, who ended her college career one three-pointer shy of posting the highest three-point percentage in the nation.
In the Eagles’ fi rst year of
postseason eligibility, FGCU made winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament title look easy, crushing the second-seeded Hatters with a fi nal score of 67-39.
“We’ve gone up quite a few levels since we fi rst started, and we try to get better every day,” said Smesko, the A-Sun Coach of the Year.
By the end of the season, FGCU was ranked No. 3 in the Mid-Major poll and in the Top 30 for the coach’s and Associated Press polls. They went into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 12 seed, paired with No. 5-seeded Bonaventure.
“For the coaches and the press to put us in the top 30 teams in the nation speaks volumes,” Smesko said.
Knowing this was the program’s fi rst year of postseason eligibility, the team set a goal early of winning the conference championship and competing in the Big Dance.
“As soon as we stepped on the court in preseason, we talked about how badly we wanted to go to the NCAA Tournament,” said senior co-captain Kelsey Jacobson. “We set the goal, and we expected to achieve it.”
She and Co-captain Courtney Chihil have played for FGCU since their freshman year and have grown along with the women’s basketball program. The Eagles have won three A-Sun Conference championships in fi ve Division I seasons.
“I think it’s an honor to be called a leader for this team that has had so much success,” Chihil said.

conference, while Smesko called Chihil “an amazing all around player who often gets overlooked.” During the last few moments of regulation play against Bonaventure, Chihil made a much celebrated shot to tie the game and force overtime.
Next season, the Eagles will be without four of their top fi ve scorers -- Chihil, Jacobson, Griffi n and Nicoya Jackson -- as the seniors move on with life beyond basketball. Only Jackson aspires to further a basketball career by playing overseas.
“I can’t wait to graduate, but I know I’m going to miss college basketball,” said the Criminal Justice major who posted the second highest scoring average after Hansen.
She called going to the NCAA Tournament “a dream come true,” even
with the heartbreaking overtime loss. “Every basketball player prepares to go the NCAA their whole career,” Jackson said.
As a redshirt sophomore, Hansen, led the team in scoring and rebounds and was selected as fi rst team all conference. She has two seasons remaining at FGCU but has played alongside the graduating seniors for the last three years.
Hansen knows next season she will be a key player, not only on the court but also in leading a younger team. Also stepping up will be teammate Whitney Knight, who made the all conference freshman team this season.
For Smesko, Hansen has turned out to be a diamond in the rough. He saw the McKean, Pennsylvania native play half of a high school game and placed a star by her name but didn’t have need for another player until months later.
“I liked her competitive spirit, and I liked her toughness,” Smesko recalled. “I gave her a call right before she was ready to commit to another school. I knew she was a kid who would fi t in well with what we do, and I really liked the way she went about things on the fl oor. She’s even exceeded my expectations of her.”
Hansen attributes her competitive spirit to growing up with four siblings.
“I have the best parents in the world,” she added. “They were always behind me, teaching me I shouldn’t be satisfi ed if I’m not giving my best effort and telling me I can do anything I want to
do if I just work at it.”Not only has Hansen posted the most
impressive numbers on the court, she maintains a 3.95 grade point average.
While Hansen has received much attention, Smesko said the team’s success can’t be attributed to one individual, as different players step up with rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
The seniors said they have been proud to represent FGCU and appreciate the amazing support the team gets from the Estero community. The game against Michigan State and the fi nal home game against Stetson both drew crowds of more than 3,000.
“You feel good to be an Eagle every day,” said graduating senior Sarah Brolsma Whitfi eld.
The young women also attribute much of the team’s success to Coach Smesko, saying he doesn’t yell, but he has high expectations and lets players know if they are meeting them.
“He’s got to be one of the most hardworking coaches in the entire country,” said Jacobson, calling Smesko “a basketball genius.” “He knows how to motivate us and get us to do the right thing.”
As the team says goodbye to its graduating seniors, Smesko is proud of their development on and off the court.
“They’re a great group of young ladies; they’re great student athletes,” he said. “We’ve got some kids among the best and brightest -- doctors, nurses and business leaders of the future.”

Now the worst thing you can do is bring mom a vacuum cleaner for Mother’s Day, but splurging on the actual kitchen and the bath is a sure winner.
Th e kitchen is a family gathering spot and an investment in a dream kitchen will provide years of enjoyment and practical use. Similarly, the bathroom is a sanctuary and a place for pampering and respite.
As such, we highly recommend that you consult with mom before springing for major changes.
While remodeling may seem daunting and labor intensive, the good news is it doesn’t have to be.
Our recommendation is to fi nd a trusted professional to work on designing your dream spaces.
One common mistake to avoid: do not act as your own “contractor” to save a few bucks.
We scoured local Kitchen and Bath businesses and the common theme was: please hire a pro to avoid costly mistakes.
“I tried to do it on my own with a kitchen project and took a bath (no pun intended),” said George who asked that his last name not be disclosed. Th e Estero resident learned his lesson when he decided to splurge on his wife’s bathroom.

Dog Trainer and Author Lisa Hartman is no stranger to helping animals, and her new book is no exception. Best known as a Dog Trainer and Pet Expert in South Florida and “The Hamptons”, New York, she is also an Author (“DIAL A DYNAMITE DOG: The Ultimate Field Guide for Training Your Pet”), and an accomplished pet photographer with her work appearing in many pet publications and pet products. She is regularly seen on television and in magazines giving pet advice, and has worked and volunteered for many rescue organizations here and in New York as well. With her soon to be re-leased “Hampton Dogs” and now “Florida Companions” she decided to marry all of her talents and put the fun in FUNdraising.
“It will also be “raising” awareness to specifi c issues facing Florida pets and the work of animal advocacy groups here” Lisa says of her new book. “From dog res-cues to therapy dogs, dock diving and canine frisbee, there are plenty of ways your pet can make a difference and have a better quality of life in Florida. Some people are still not aware that you can adopt a purebred dog. I have two gorgeous purebreds, a Dalmatian and a Chi-nese Crested. They have both appeared on magazine and book covers and create quite a stir walking down the street. I am still amazed that people don’t believe I rescued them. But I think all animals are beautiful, and fully believe great companions are made, not born, whether purebred or a mixed breed.”
Like Hampton Dogs, Florida Companions is a beauti-ful, full color coffee table book that people can have their pets participate in, and have their stories told. “What’s more, nobody would throw away a book fea-turing their animal, so the mission of these advocacy groups will always be at pet owners fi ngertips, and the pictures and stories of pets enjoying life in Florida even if from humble beginnings is priceless.”
Here’s how it works: For $700.00 your pet receives a photo shoot in the Southeast Florida location of your choice, a full page photograph in Florida Companions with their profi le or rescue story, and you receive a copy of the book. Pets do not have to be rescues but proceeds from the book as well as fundraising events benefi t local animal organizations.

VOLVOOCEAN R A C E
It’s been called the ‘Everest of Sailing’ for good reason… The Volvo Ocean Race is an extreme global sailing race where six teams are competing across
39,270 nautical miles through some of the world’s most treacherous seas. The race kicked off from Spain on November 5th and will conclude in Ireland in July 2012.
Making its only North American stopover, the crews of these 70-foot specially designed sailing yachts will begin arriving at the newly constructed Volvo Ocean Race Downtown Miami Race Village on May 6th… leg 7 of the 10-continent race… and the excitement is mounting!
Spanning more than 27 acres
in Bicentennial Park, the village will provide an expected 200,000 tourists, sailing enthusiasts and the local South Florida community a place to “Sea and be Seen.” With a rich history of sailing in the South Florida community, Miami is home to the U.S. Sailing Center.
For 14 event-packed days and nights there will be sailing and

extreme water sports activities, educational programs for children of all ages, interactive pavilions, a 3-D Marine Cinema featuring the global race, music entertainment and wrap-around special events.
And that’s not the half of it! There will also be a Classic Steamboat Race, Optimist Class Nationals, In-Port Race, Pro Am Race, paddle
boarding lessons with PUMA, Mother’s Day in the Park, an Antique & Classic Auto exhibit, kite sailing, food, drinks, a family festival, a Gala and more.
With the recent $50,000.00 commitment, the Miami DDA became one of the offi cial Port Sponsors. “Miami Downtown development Authority is a strong partner to have
for this event,” says Don Poole, president, board of directors, Volvo Ocean Race Miami, Inc. “We know with the local impact of this event that businesses in Downtown Miami will feel the economic boost during a month when tourism usually starts to slow down.”

of the Miami Downtown Development Authority explained that “… downtown Miami is a natural backdrop for this event. As an international destination with an iconic waterfront setting, the district is already serving as a magnet for tourism and recreation. Local merchants are being notifi ed to gear up for the tourism infl ux they will see this May. We are proud to participate as a key sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Race and are excited to have this opportunity to showcase our city’s greatest assets.”
Another partnership is The Big Blue & You Foundation. Through this joint venture there will be plenty of fun and educational experiences for the children who visit the race village on pre-determined dates. The Miami-Dade Public Schools and select private schools will help facilitate the organization of local students to visit the site as planned fi eld trips. The legacy’s main goal will be to inspire participating youth to understand the importance of water (both fresh and salt) in our daily lives and how they can be involved in protecting this precious resource.
“We strongly believe that children are the strategic medium to transport new ideas and information about protecting our blue planet to their parents, families and society as a whole,” says Danni Washington, Founder of The Big Blue & You Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to inspire, educate and empower today’s youth to become global stewards of the Earth and guardians of the Oceans through service learning, visual arts & media “We applaud Volvo Ocean Race Miami’s efforts in proposing this special opportunity for the children in our community.”
The newest partnership is Groupon. The internet site will be providing “Groupon Getaways” to their online database including opportunities to purchase tickets to the Volvo Ocean Race Gala on May 17th, sailing packages, VIP passes, weekday and weekend events and tours of the Volvo Open 70s.

Whether you are a seasoned traveler or it is your fi rst time overseas, Ireland offers an English speaking destination with rolling hills, dramatic
coastline vistas and authentic experiences that will create lasting memories. Experience the sophistication of Dublin and Belfast and the peaceful ambiance of small villages in the span of just one week! From the old to the new, Ireland takes on a Robin Hood-esque feeling amongst its crumbling medieval castles to its world-class golf courses and resorts, which are known as some of the best in the world!
Ireland is a favorite destination for the clients of SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel. Laura Hildenbrandt, Personal Ticket & Travel Concierge says “We’ve seen a dramatic rise in the number of clients who are inquiring about vacations to Ireland.” One reason may be its diversity, drawing travelers of every age, nationality and interest! Laura says
“The number of things you can see and do in this one amazing country, are astonishing! We’ve customized Irish vacations for golfers, honeymooners, luxury clientele and families looking for an alternative to the normal summer family vacation experience.”
Some of the most famous sights in this green and gorgeous country are the Waterford Crystal exhibition in the South East, Blarney Castle and the Cobh Heritage Centre in Cork, Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher and the ‘Burren Landscape’ of County Clare. Other “must see” areas are the Aran Islands, Connemara in County Galway and Ireland’s most visited attraction, the ancient Megalithic Tombs at Newgrange, which is located just 45 minutes north of Dublin.
The people of Ireland are warm and friendly. It’s not unusual for travelers to be invited to belly up to the bar of a traditional Irish pub and have a pint with a local. While the accents and dialects of the spoken word will vary greatly while journeying from County Dublin in the East of Ireland to the western counties of Cork, Kerry and Clare, the one unchanging constant will be the level of friendliness, humor & welcome that visitors are met with throughout their travels.
Ireland will leave its visitors with a wonderful array of memories of the diverse scenery and cultural differences that they will encounter from one side of the country to the other. To learn more about this destination with endless possibilities, please call Lisa or Laura at SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel (954-456-0419 or 866-798-7328) and they will customize an enchanting Irish vacation you will not soon forget. You can also visit www.sitinmyseats.com for your next vacation to this or any other worldwide destination.

As we passed beneath the s e a - f o a m
inspiring draperies and stepped into the Blue Water, daylight faded away as we found ourselves in an undersea world of mottled blues and bubbles.
With just a few steps, we had plunged into a culinary adventure at the Blue Water Bistro. The hip bar area, illumined in blue, and the award-winning swordfi sh sculpture give the restaurant an elegant, oceanic feel.
“It’s a very sexy interior,” says owner Skip Quillen, whose company of chefs at Culinary Concepts overseas fi ve local restaurants, offering everything from juicy steaks to hearty pasta and gourmet burgers.
Blue Water opened in Coconut Point Mall in 2006 and has been reeling in customers ever since with its impressive array of fresh catches and shellfi sh, plated perfectly with made-from-scratch sauces.
Quillen, his corporate chef, Chris Metzler, and Blue Water’s chef, Dan England, are all graduates of the Culinary Institute of America. The colorful dishes they create are as pleasing to the eyes as they are to the palate.
“We try to have personal creativity,” Quillen said. “Everything we make, we make from scratch.”
Our seafood feast began with The Ultimate. King and snow crab legs jutted boldly from a bed of ice dotted with Panama white shrimp, oysters, clams and mussels. The Ultimate appetizer for two was served with zippy cocktail sauce and creamy citrus sauce for
dipping. After serving us cheddar jalapeno rolls and
sourdough bread, our server, Marge, walked us through the rest of the menu, highlighting the extensive cocktail list and the sushi rolls made in-house daily.
“I tell everyone we make the best crab cake in town,” she boasted, and we discovered this was no exaggeration.
The giant patty is made from three types of crab, along with chunks of lobster, and served atop a creamy Palm Island remoulade. With a ring of green and red olive oils at the plate’s edge and more crab meat piled on top, this crab cake was a beauty.
We also dove into a festive mound of mussels cooked in Bloody Mary both with jalapeno-citrus spiced vodka, appropriately named “Morning After Mussels.” Then we sampled the Sugar Shack Shrimp, one of the bistro’s most popular appetizers. This sweet and spicy dish features crispy fried shrimp with an Asian fl are, served with black beans and rice.
Feeling fat and happy already, we focused our attention on the main course. House specialties include Fresh Grouper Scampi, Seared Tuna and the Captain’s Cut, featuring

miso glazed sea bass, wasabi crumb, carrot miso-soy and Asian stir fry.
The Fresh Catch section offers nearly a dozen selections of fi sh from all over the world, including Canadian Atlantic Salmon, Costa Rican Swordfi sh, Australian Barramundi and Hawaiian MonChong.
“We’re the only ones who get in fresh fi sh from Hawaii and the Northern shores,” Quillen noted.
Fresh catches change with the season, so the “School of Fish” on the back of the menu proves helpful in defi ning each of 39 species the restaurant serves. I learned Opakapaka is pink snapper with a tender, sweet fl avor, and Hamachi, or Rainbow Runner, is a cousin of yellowtail with rich and oily meat and a strong, buttery fl avor.
Following Marge’s recommendation, we settled on Mahi Mac and Chicken Danny. As we waited, we enjoyed the Apple, Walnut and Romaine salad, featuring thin-sliced apples mingled with chunky blue cheese dressing and proscuitto. The Bistro Salad fuses the fl avors of mixed greens, watermelon, pecans, sunfl ower seeds,
chevre cheese and raspberry-yuzu dressing. When our main course arrived, we fi rst feasted with
our eyes, as again, the dishes looked nearly too lovely to mar. The signature Mahi Mac features macadamia encrusted mahi mahi, served over island rice with grilled pineapple chunks and togarashi sauce, piled attractively with julienned vegetables.
The creamy Chicken Danny is a split, grilled breast of chicken served with chevre cheese, roasted mushrooms, spinach, artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes, on a bed of fettuccine with sweet basil and lemon sauce.
The evening was capped with homemade carrot cake (served with gingersnap gelato) and Peanut Butter Black Bottom Pie. This decadent treat layers dark chocolate ganache and peanut butter cream, served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.

I had run over to the bayside shack right after my downtown lunch meeting to chat with a potential client and then needed to zip out to check on a video production. But I had a couple of minutes before I had to be at the edit so I walked over to say hi.
Bill was in shorts and sporting two days of stubble. Ed was in khakis and sneakers. Ed had a beer. Bill was drinking wine. Neither was looking at their smartphones. And did I mention that it was 1:30 on a workday?
“Look at the two of you – happy as pigs in mangos, enjoying a beautiful day with nowhere to go. Man, I want to be you when I grow up.”
I told them about Starbucks envy. You know Starbucks envy. That’s when you go to
Starbucks and see those people sitting there in the sun. Usually they have a bike leaning against their table or they’re there with their dog. They’re reading something on their iPad or thumbing through The New York Times. Not a care in the world and clearly nowhere to rush off to. They remind me of that old poster, “Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.”
When I go to Starbucks, it’s usually to meet someone on the run — I’m meeting Marcos at the Starbucks in the Grove at nine or Kim at the Starbucks on 69th Street at two in the afternoon. We’ll grab a cup of coffee or tea, share pleasantries, and then get down to work — exchanging ideas and layouts, strategizing next steps — before we run off to our next meeting. Of course, while we’re meeting we’re fi elding text messages and calls, mostly about where we’re going next, who we’re going to meet, and what time we’ll be getting together.
But just to sit there and take in the scene, with nothing pressing to run off to… wow. My desires might be simple but that kind of takes my breath away.
So anyway, I told Bill and Ed about my fantasy — my Starbucks envy. Ed laughed and told
me a story:“I was walking through Coconut
Grove one night and there were a couple of guys
playing music on the street corner. They had a guitar case out in front of them and a few people gathered around and they were having a great time. I thought, ‘I want to do that, too.’ So I went out and
bought a guitar and have been taking guitar lessons ever since. I’m not so good yet but I’m giving myself 10 years because I want to be just like Turkel.” (Hey wait a minute, that’s me.)
Here’s the funny part. Until Ed mentioned that it was me and my buddy he stumbled upon on that street corner, I was listening to his story thinking, “I want to do that, too.” It wasn’t until he mentioned who he saw playing that it dawned on me that I already do that.
It’s more than the old paradigm to “be careful what you wish for because you might get it.” In this case, it’s about realizing what you’ve already got, what the perception is of what you’ve got, and what your perception is of what else is out there. The grass is always greener, indeed.
And it’s not just a good thing to think about when you’re evaluating your life. It’s also a good exercise to do when you’re thinking about your brand. After all, a brand is not what you think of your company, it’s what your employees and your customers — and your potential customers — think of it. And it’s very possible that those two viewpoints are not in sync.
Kodak thought it stood for the fi nest in photography until its customers cared only about digital photography and Kodak found itself in bankruptcy.
Palm thought its brand stood for PDAs until it realized that RIM’s Blackberry and Apple’s iPhone had stolen its market share.
And Blackberry, who thought its brand was de rigueur for portable communication in the boardroom, is quickly discovering that its customers no longer agree.
Even powerhouse Google, which preemptively purchased YouTube to maintain their superiority in search technology, is concerned that Facebook and the voice-recognition company Nuance, will take their place in both search and ad sales.
So whether you’re dashing to a meeting, playing music on a street corner or marketing one of the world’s most important companies, remember that when it comes to your brand, perception IS reality. Even at Starbucks.
