activity -involving more than one task - it is better to accomplish it in easy
steps. In this way, you will focus on each task and will easily manage your

STEP#1: IDEA GENERATION
HOW TO GENERATE IDEAS?
Before writing an essay, you have to generate some good Ideas. To
accomplish this task, you have to go through Idea generation process. This
will involve TWO of the following effective techniques:
• BRAINSTORMING
• MIND MAPPING
Brainstorming
The purpose of brainstorming is to generate on a topic. It involves group
discussion between two or more individuals with the aim to produce random
ideas. Remember these factors when brainstorming a topic:
• FOCUS ON QUANTITY- produce as many ideas as possible
• AVOID CRITICISM- the goal is to generate assorted ideas without
being judgmental
• WELCOME UNUSUAL IDEA- come up with new and original ideas
Mind mapping
Mind mapping is a more refined form of idea generation. It is aimed to
outline and classify ideas obtained through brainstorming. It involves:
• Writing your topic in the centre
• Branching out ideas through linear illustrations
• Using colors to connect similar ideas
STEP#2: RESEARCHING
Researching Tips
After you have generated ideas, you have to research your topic. It involves
gathering materials relevant to your topic. For researching your topic, you must:
• Go through different sources of information-
books, newspapers, magazines, academic journals etc and gather relevant
information
• Make notes of important information in the course of your research
process
• Organise your materials in a proper filing system
STEP#3: WRITING
FORMAT
The FORMAT of an essay is:
• Introduction: In this section, you will state purpose for writing the essay. You will provide background information about
your topic. Here you will introduce your thesis statement.
• Body: In the body part, you will elaborate on what you have stated in the “introductory paragraph”. Here you will provide
your main arguments along with relevant examples to support your thesis. Use a proper organizational plan such as hierarchical steps or
chronological order to discuss your arguments.
• Conclusion: Lastly, you will summarise all your main arguments in the conclusion. Also, you will remind your readers
about your thesis- the central argument of your discussion. Wrap up your paper by offering a relevant proposition.
STEP#4: EDITING
Important Skills Of Editing An Essay
Finally, you must edit your work before handing it over. At this
step, you must capitalise on the following four skills:
• REVISING- Rephrase or rewrite portions of text
• PROOFREADING- Remove spelling, grammar and
punctuation errors
• FORMATTING- Make sure that you have used the right
formatting style for your paper
