ESL Pathways
How do I begin?
Step #1: Get Help
Contact Mary Calderon to make an appointment
for help (see below).
Step #2: Enroll
Enroll in the college by filling out the application
online at mjc.edu
Step #3: Test
Take the CASAS placement test for the English
for Life and Work Program to determine your
level. Take the ESL Accuplacer test to enter the
Academic ESL Program. The tests are free in
Yosemite Hall Room 147 (West Campus).
Step #4: Register
Register for classes at www.mjc.edu. Click on
Class Schedule under Academics. Pay for clas-
ses online or in person at the Business Office on
East Campus
Step #5: Ready!
Buy your books and attend class! Books for
courses are available at the MJC Bookstore (East
Campus).
What is the difference
between the two programs?
English for Life and Work
This program teaches English
language skills for everyday life and
work situations. The classes include
listening, speaking, reading, and
writing skills. Grammar and
vocabulary are also taught. The
classes are 8 weeks during the day
and 16 weeks at night.
Academic ESL
This program teaches academic
English language skills for students
who want to take college courses.
The courses are 16 weeks.
Students can take courses in
reading/composition, grammar, and
speaking/listening to improve their
academic English skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
What documents do I need?
Only a picture ID or residency card is needed
to complete an application. The college as-
signs a student identification number once
you apply. There is no need to be a legal
resident to take non-credit courses. To take
classes for credit and apply for financial aid,
you must be a California resident.
How much are the courses?
Non-Credit English for Life and Work cours-
es are free; however, a fee of approximately
$19.00 is charged each semester for health
and student services.
Credit courses in the Academic ESL
Program or the English for Life and Work
Program are $46.00 per unit or $29.00 per
semester with the BOG fee waiver. All credit
courses are five units. Financial aid is also
available.
