Page 2: Escaping the Forest Fires

Sixteen baby orangutans are part of 470 of the animals rescued from the wild as flames rip through jungle home.

Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation's Nyaru Menteng centre is helping the apes recover from smoke inhalation.

But as raging infernos continue to sweep Borneo Island, consideration is being given to evacuating animals entirely.

Sixteen baby orangutans are being cared for after suffering infections from prolonged exposure to the thick, yellow smoke suffocating Indonesia's half of Borneo Island.

Their devoted caretakers are looking after the fun-loving infant apes as they recover from high fevers and serious coughs brought on by the arid fumes.

Page 5: Escaping the Forest Fires

They are in need of a healthier environment after being left without a habitat to survive in by the raging infernos that ripped through their island paradise.

However, as the threat level of further fires remains at its peak, the animals may all need to be relocated again, with further thick smoke a looming danger to their health.

Although one pair can be seen hugging, and dozens more lying around listlessly, they still remain anxious and alert to the hazardous conditions closing in.

Page 9: Escaping the Forest Fires

Most of the orangutans are too exhausted to move after days hunting for food and water as fires relentlessly encroached on their forest homelands, forcing them to flee.

The vast plumes of smoke have drifted over large expanses of the region, sickening countless people, disrupting transport, schools and business.

A whole number of older orangutans gather to eat fruit at the rehabilitation center operated by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.

Despite being a near annual occurrence, the toxic cloud is on track to become the worst on record, and staff at the centre say the intensity of the smoke and flames at ground zero has never been seen before.

Baby orangutans, which had previously suffered from respiratory problems, are fed milk by a worker at a nursery in the rehabilitation centre.

The threat level at the centre still sits on 'code yellow' but a full-scale evacuation of all 470 orangutans in their care is being considered.
