Unit 1Introduction to and Case Studies in
Entrepreneurship and Career Opportunities
Rationale:
This unit will introduce students to the concept and characteristics of entrepreneurship andventure planning, and to the importance of entrepreneurship to individuals, communities, and
the Canadian economy. Students will examine a number of entrepreneurial case studies from avariety of sectors. Students will be expected to be able to analyze the different cases to identify
similarities and differences. This should also be an opportunity to seed ideas of what makes a
good venture, what makes a successful entrepreneur, and how opportunities may develop.Exposure to a great variety of examples of ventures will also inspire creativity within students.
Pre- Requisite Learnings:
No pre-requisite learnings are required as this is an introductory unit.
Unit Objectives- By the end of the unit, students should be able to:
Explore the meaning of entrepreneurship and how it relates to problem solving. Explain the differences between invention and innovation. Identify the common characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Recognize and examine some of the factors that influence entrepreneurs. Distinguish and illustrate the characteristics of an entrepreneurial venture. Compare and contrast entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship and explore constraints
to innovation within organizations.
Explain and show the relationship of entrepreneurship to the individual, community andsociety as a whole.

Common Essential Learnings
Communication: Students will be able to communicate with others what skills it takes to be
a successful entrepreneur and what skills they have in order to be as well. They will have tocommunicate this through many different mediums throughout the unit.
Critical & Creative Thinking: There will be many different times throughout the unit that
students will have to sit and think creatively in terms of self-discovery and skill development. Inaddition they will also have to be creative when determining factors and roles entrepreneurs
are influenced by and possess.
Technological Literacy: Throughout the unit students will be interacting with different toolsto create info graphics, gather info from YouTube and the internet and create presentations.
Personal & Social Values & Skills: Students will have to examine themselves throughout
the entire unit and plan action plans to develop their skills.
Adaptations:Will be made accordingly and after discussion with the student and LST have taken place.
