EN Engineering Completes LargeCommissioning ProjectEN Engineering recently completed its largest commissioningproject to date, the Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC (STT) pipelineproject. The 515 mile interstate natural gas pipeline throughAlabama, Georgia and Florida will be able to transport over 1billion cubic feet per day. "The project represents our singlelargest commissioning project from both a time and revenueperspective," stated Mark Chadd, Vice President, Automation.

The Automation teamperformed allcompressor stationprogramming, pre-commissioning, andcommissioning forthree compressorstations, 42 mainlineblock valves, and sixmeter and regulationstations. "The projectincluded creation ofsite-specific, detailedcommissioningmanuals with start-upprocedures describing the sequence of events for commissioningeach of these systems, including visual inspection andenergization support, PLC/HMI software development, factoryacceptance testing, site acceptance testing, tuning, and training,"Chadd explained. "We also provided standard operator,maintenance, and on-site training demonstrations for all writtenapplications, including HMI display operation, loop and pointconfiguration, custom applications and reports."

Our efforts spanned eight months and employed as many as 30Automation team employees. "It was truly a team effortcoordinated by Project Manager Lance Irvin. At times, our teamwas working 12 hours days 6 days per week and logged inexcess of 21,000 hours."

Chadd attributes the successful outcome to a high level ofefficient and effective communication between STT, localcontractors, and the EN Engineering team. "Project meetings tookplace daily and weekly to ensure a coordinated effort. Thecommissioning leads communicated with the project managersand commissioning coordinators at each site." he recalled. The successful commissioning project demonstrates ENEngineering's capabilities in this new service area. "As a result ofour work on this large-scale project, we are in a position to winnew business, and in fact, have just earned another sizablecommissioning job," Chadd concluded.

Recycling Facility Project Utilizes ENEngineering's Expansive ExpertiseLast month's ribboncutting in Ohio at anew commercialplant and feedevaluation facility forPureCycleTechnologies kicked off a largemulti-faceted projectthat will utilize resources from many of EN Engineering's areas ofexpertise. Although the project will be led by the IndustrialSolutions team, it will eventually by staffed by process industries,electrical, PSM, refining, design, and environmentalprofessionals.

"This is a tremendous example of a multi-dimensional project,"stated David Gibson, Vice President, Industrial Solutions."Through our various experts, EN Engineering will be providingthe entire gamut of industrial site services."

"The new commercial plant and feedstock evaluation unit is beingbuilt in a vacant industrial site where one active plant continues tooperate," explained Robert Williams, Senior Project Manager."We will be assessing the existing infrastructure of the idled plantand determining what can be re-used, along with designing thenew facility and material handling systems, as well as bringing innew utilities." The feedstock evaluation unit will begin operating inthe summer of 2018, with the full-scale plant targeted for a 2020opening.

"Our extensive process design expertise, along with expertise intraditional engineering services, made us a great fit for thisproject," Gibson explained. "We have the capabilities to designthe material handling processes and understand the ISBL processdesign. Combined with our expertise in traditional civilengineering services, this is a great advantage. We're excited tobring our vast areas of expertise together and work on thisbreakthrough project."

The new PureCycle facility will use Proctor & Gamble's breakthrough recycling method to removeodor, contaminants, and color from one of the world's most common plastics and restore usedpolypropylene (PP) plastic to 'virgin-like' quality with a recycling method that is one of a kind andenable consumers to purchase more products made from recycled plastic.

Virtual and Augmented Reality RevolutionizeEngineering PracticesVirtual reality (VR) isgrowing in popularityas electronic devicesbecome smaller, yetpowerful enough torun graphicallyintense programs.Currently, the mostpopular applicationscreated are for theentertainmentindustry; however,everyday businessuses are not far behind.

EN Engineering uses an array of 3D modeling platforms such asAutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, and Revit to 3D model complexprojects. "Any 3D model designed by EN Engineering can beturned into a virtual reality demonstration," explained RyanHagensee, Design Technology Manager. "Once the model iscomplete, the process takes just a few days to create a workingVR application within the Unity software engine." Importing themodel into the Unity engine allows custom programming andincreased functionality. "We currently use VR for visualizingworksites, but soon we will be able to change out materials, paintcolors, valve operators, and eventually design in VR."

"In the past, we had to look at 2D drawings and imagine theresult," added Dave Klimas, Chief Engineer. "Now we can put ona VR headset and immerse ourselves in the design as if we werethere."

The potential of VR is exciting, but augmented reality (AR) willhave an even greater impact on engineering practices.Augmented reality utilizes a device with a screen and a camerathat adds data to a view of the real world. A mobile phone or atablet can work as an augmented reality device; however, moreadvanced headsets are coming on the market every day. DAQRI,Microsoft HoloLens, and Meta 2 are examples of state-of-the-artAR headsets that use a see-through display to show additionalinformation about the site. "Imagine your AR display giving youexact instructions on shutting down a line, or showing the flow ofgas through the piping of a complex system," explainedHagensee. "The AR device can detect unique geometry, whichtriggers the work instructions."

Augmented reality can be a game-changer in the natural gas andoil industry. Work instructions, safety updates, training, andinspection checklists are all items that could be put into an ARapplication. "Augmented reality could be the avenue for passingdown information from the aging workforce to the next generationof workers," Hagensee suggested. "As the aging workforceretires, utilities will be looking for solutions to ease this burden."

Recently, RyanHagensee and DaveKlimas visited DAQRIheadquarters in LosAngeles to examinetheir Smart Helmettechnology. During thevisit Dave Klimaswalked around a"virtual" turbinereviewing the design.The turbine maintainedits orientation as Davewalked around it. Davecould select menus bystaring at them for asecond or two,activating thatcommand within thehelmet view screen. Inx-ray mode, Dave couldlook at the engine'sinner components.

EN Engineering Earns Gold Shovel Standard Certification

EN Engineering has earned the prestigious 2017 Gold Shovel Standard certification, a first-of-its-kind excavation safety programdesigned to reduce dig-ins and protect the underground gas andelectric system. With safety as its highest priority, the Gold ShovelStandard certification process was developed to ensure that hiredcontractors are vetted annually and adhere to the safestexcavation standards.

Gold Shovel Certification gives the client assurance that ENEngineering has procedures in place for trained employees to worksafely around buried utilities. In many cases, specifically inCalifornia, it is a prerequisite for working with certain utilities. "The certification helps ensure the safety of the public and ouremployees while working around buried assets," stated Phil Eggen,Senior Project Manager, Corrosion Engineering Services. "Withthis certification, EN Engineering will be able to showcase ourcapabilities to perform Indirect Assessments as part of the ExternalCorrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) program for many Californiautilities."

Meet Our People: Gary BlevinsAs a child, Gary Blevins witnessed firsthand the devastatingimpact a workplace injury can have on a family. His grandfatherlost a leg as a result of an incident while working on the railroad."I learned the importance of workplace safety early in life, and thatreally stuck with me," explained Gary. Now, as Vice President,Process Safety Management, he leads a team that is dedicated tohelping companies reduce risks on jobsites and implementregulations to avoid tragedies.

The Process Safety Management (PSM) team helps evaluate andimprove clients' PSM programs to ensure safe operation andcompliance with standards and regulations. "Our ultimateobjective is to help clients meet their compliance and regulatoryrequirements and help mitigate the risks they face on a dailybasis and prevent catastrophic events," he commented.

Gary, who joined EN Engineering in 2009, has an impressive 25-year career in the energy industry. His father worked for El PasoEnergy, a natural gas company, where Gary completed severalinternships during college. This experience convinced him toremain in the field. Today, he enjoys applying his vast expertise tohelp customers. "One of the things that excites me is winning thetrust of a new client and becoming an advisor that clients cantrust. I've built very strong client relationships over the years, andit is personally satisfying."

Working out of the Catlettsburg, Kentucky office, and also living inthe area, Gary bleeds blue, rarely missing a University ofKentucky basketball game. He and his family live on a small farmwhere they raise Angus cattle, and they show cattle in severalnational cattle shows each year. "We have gone to nationalshows and state fairs in Tulsa; Indianapolis; Des Moines; andGrand Island, Nebraska," he explained. "We've had some divisionand grand champions over the years and actually had the divisionchampion female at the Kentucky State Fair this year! It's a greathobby for the whole family."
