The Brantford General is a 250+ bed, acute care facility, aprograms and services for our 120,000+ residents. Over the last seven years, $90 million has been invested in improvements to the hospital. The Willett, Paris is a multi-service health care centre with a daily Urgent Care Department as well as a state-of-the-art Diagnostic Imaging Service.

Our Vision: Leading the Way - Exemplary Care The Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) Foundation relies on the generous support of our many donors to ensure we are able to meet the needs of our patients, both today and tomorrow.

The BCHS Foundation is committed to raising critical funds to support the top priority needs for The Brantford General and The Willett, Paris. Your support of the BCHS Foundation helps us purchase medical equipment that is not paid for by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care, provide essential resources to maintain the exceptional level of compassionate patient care, and invest in new and innovative technology.

The BCHS is a regional centre for Paediatrics, Mental Health, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, CT Scanning, Critical Care, Surgical Services, Ambulatory Care and Emergency Medicine. We are also the site of the Brant Community Cancer Clinic and the SC Johnson Dialysis Clinic for patients throughout Brant County and Haldimand-Norfolk.

We have more than 200 physicians and 13 members of the Department of Dentistry using our facilities. In addition, we employ over 1402 highly trained staff and have more than 430 dedicated volunteers at our sites.

Together, we are transforming healthcare in our community!

• The new Integrated Stroke Unit at the Brantford General Hospital held its official opening on October 30, 2013. This facility houses a 20-bed integrated stroke program serving the communities of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk. Now patients who suffer a stroke will have access to best practice stroke care provided by a team of professionals with expertise specifically in stroke.

• The Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) has been awarded a Gold Level 2013 Quality Healthcare Workplace Award for the second year in a row from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ontario Hospital Association. The BCHS was presented with the award at the Ontario Hospital Association’s Health Achieve Conference on November 5, 2013.

• The BCHS was honoured to host a tour for this year’s 29th Annual International Conference of the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME, hosted in Toronto). The BCHS welcomed individuals from all over North America to learn about and see the process flow of supplies and information supporting patient care.

• The Grand Erie Six Nations Clinical Education Campus – Brantford Centre officially opened at the BCHS with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 18, 2013. The centre was built with the help from a generous grant from the City of Brantford, and additional funding provided by McMaster University, the DeGroote School of Medicine and the BCHS Foundation. The centre includes classrooms, offices and ‘call rooms’ for medical residents on duty.

• Canada’s first multi-discipline, automated hospital laboratory officially opened in February 2011 at the BCHS.

• We celebrated the opening of a second cluster medical isolation unit in June 2013. This allows the BCHS to be more effective in responding to patient care needs when they require isolation for infectious diseases such as MRSA, VRE or C-Difficile. The isolation unit rooms have specialized furnishings and fixtures that stand up to increased cleaning and ensure each room has dedicated equipment for the duration of the patient’s stay and serves as a model for other healthcare facilities.

• Brantford General is top hospital in Canada for lowest mortality rates. The achievement was announced by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) in Ottawa with the release of the national 2012/13 Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR), which measures the number of actual deaths compared to expected deaths in hospitals that meet a statistical threshold of 2,500 or more HSMR cases in each of the last three years.

QUALITYHEALTHCARE WORKPLACE

It is an exciting time at the Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) as we continue to be recognized as a leader in healthcare in Canada.

Recent Successes at the BCHS

The face of healthcare fundraising has changed; we have asked our donors to support the development of the capital equipment fund,

to assist us in responding quickly to the growing and significant needs of our healthcare system.

This will allow us to maximize every dollar. We must be flexible to “spring into action”

when equipment unexpectedly fails, replacement parts are no longer available,

technology changes, or special discount purchase opportunities are made available.

A Worthy Investment

Our Need: Prioritized Capital Equipment

Each year, the BCHS staff, physicians and management identify medical equipment that requires new or replacement purchase. Although the BCHS, through sound fiscal management, provides funds to replace or purchase approximately $2 million dollars of this equipment, the annual list currently exceeds $5 million.

It is estimated that over $25 million will be needed by the Brant Community Healthcare System to support critical patient equipment, over the next 5 years.

It is through the generosity of our many wonderful donors, like you, that the BCHS Foundation has been able to help fund the purchase of critical pieces of equipment to support our healthcare system. The equipment supported by donor dollars isn’t ‘nice to have’ – it is essential, much needed equipment required to perform daily medical diagnostics and care for our patients. Funding for this equipment is not provided by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, but rather from generous corporations, foundations and individuals who care to maintain and improve our community’s health.

Benefits to our Community

Modern, up to date equipment and resources are attractive to new physicians looking to set up practice and provide incentive to existing care giving professionals to stay in our healthcare system.

In recent years, the Brant Community Healthcare System has been fortunate to acquire state of the art medical imaging technologies such as our new MRI, 256-slice CT Scanner, and our two digital mammography units. The importance of keeping and maintaining these technologically sophisticated pieces of equipment are paramount when considering how they impact patient care in all areas of our hospi-tal. Without the MRI, we wouldn’t be able to offer the OtisMed Knee replacement, the first of its kind in Canada. Our new CT Unit will enable our Radiologists to provide virtual colonoscopy and enhanced cardiac angiography to our community. Acquiring the best technology available on the market allows the BCHS to not only provide exemplary diagnostic tools, but enhances the medical services across the continuum of patient care.

Combining highly skilled medical professionals with state of the art technology and equipment,

we are able to provide exemplary care to the resi-dents of our community without having to travel

to other healthcare centers. We are truly Leading the Way- Exemplary Care.

These are some of our current emergency patient equipment needs.

Glidescope: A glidescope is a fibre optic, video - enhanced laryngoscope used when critically ill and trauma patients require the insertion of a breathing tube. This allows for a artifical ventilation.

Emergency Equipment Needs

Over the next five years, the BCHS will require this investment to support the purchase of new and replacement patient equipment in the ER to ensure life-saving technology and resources are available to our community.

Neonatal Monitor and Cart: A comprehensive diagnostic monitoring system for our youngest patients; this tool is used to measure a patient’s blood pressure, pulse, temperature and pulse oximetery (oxygen levels in the blood). This is critical medical information needed when dealing with patients who often cannot tell you for themselves their symptoms.

Portable Ultrasound: Typically used in situations where space is limited, mobility is important or the scanning must be completed in the department where the patient is located. Portable Ultrasound can immediately diagnose and assess medical conditions and is one of the most commonly utilized pieces of equipment in the ER.

Patient Physiological Monitors: A comprehensive diagnostic monitoring tool, used to measure a patient’s blood pressure, pulse, temperature and pulse oximetry simultaneously. Fourteen of these monitors are required in the Emergency Room in both Zone 1 and 3, where the most acute patients are provided exemplary care.

Our Need: $1 Million

Transport Monitor: The BCHS ER provides treatment, on average, to 2-3 cardiac episode patients a day. In complicated cases, these patients require transport to tertiary care centres. A Portable Monitor is required to consistently monitor these patients while they are being transported by ambulance with an ER Nurse. This monitor also has defibrillator capability to assist in a continued medical emergency.

Summary Our ability to support our Emergency Room patient equipment needs (immediate and future replacement) exceeds the financial capacity of our operating funds, provided to us annually by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Please support our Emergency Services Capital Equipment Fund, to continue to provide these essential resources to our friends, neighbours and family members.

The health of our community depends on it.

Bariatric Trauma StretchersSpecially designed for use in the Emergency Room, these stretchers are capable of adjusting for a variety of different treatments, including conversion to an x-ray compatible table.

Large Volume Level 1 IV Fluid WarmerThis critical emergency room tool is used to administer fluids that are warmed to body temperature to avoid shock, during treatment to trauma patients.
