As I write, we are nearing the end of the month of Av, which recalls one of the saddest days of the Jewish calendar: Tish’ah B’Av. Since its observance, we have moved from the theme of rebuke to the message of comfort, primarily conveyed through the seven haftaroth that are read in the seven-week period leading up to Rosh HaShanah. In the midst of this time,
we will also enter into the month of Elul during which our tradition implores us to begin the work of self-reflection and t’shuvah, of preparation for repentance and renewal.
Elul has the power to be the most meaningful of times on the Jewish calendar, as we look inward, and take the opportunity to remodel ourselves. During Elul, we scrub our souls clean, and we

ready the offerings of our hearts. It is a beautiful time. And, it serves as a reminder that, according to Jewish tradition, it is never too late to turn and return. In anticipation of this month and the High Holiday season, I share with you the following poem by Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis:
The last word has not been spoken The last sentence has not been written, The final verdict is not in. It is never too late To change my mind, My direction, To say no to the past And yes to the future, To offer remorse, To ask and give forgiveness. It is never too late To start over again, To feel again To love again To hope again…
Wishing you a meaningful month of Elul.

For all practical purposes, summer is
over. Schools are back in session, it
gets dark earlier in the evening and
the mornings are cooler. With summer
ending, activity is high at Shir Tikvah.
Our Birthday Party was a big success.
Thank you to all of our committee
members who worked so hard to make
our first birthday a memorable event.
Also, a big thank you to all of our
angels for their support and to all of
our congregants who donated auction
items and to all who bid.
We are very excited about the launch
of our Shir Tikvah religious school.
Many of our congregants and Rabbi
Harari have been working hard
planning and developing a curriculum
that will be both innovative and
interesting for our children. We look
forward to a successful first year and
will be sharing many of our activities
and plans with you as the year
progresses.
With September comes the High
Holidays, this year at the end of
September and the beginning of
October. Plans are almost complete for
both Conservative and Reform
services. Rabbi Harari will conduct the
Reform services and Justin Callis is
back to conduct our choir. Rabbi
Podwol and Dalia Podwol will lead the
Conservative services. This year on the
second day of Rosh Hashanah, we are
pleased to welcome Rabbi Zukrow and
congregants from Temple Beth-El in
Munster.
If you have not already, please be sure
to send your pledge and initial dues
payment for the temple year. High
Holiday tickets will not be issued until
we have received your commitment.
Security for all of our congregants,
staff and guests is our highest priority.
Once again we will have security
personnel at both doors throughout
the holidays. ALL PERSONS ENTERING
THE BUILDING MUST HAVE A TICKET
FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS. With the
ongoing escalation of violence in our
country, we are sure that you can
understand the extra security
precautions. We greatly appreciate
your support in this matter in order to
manage who is entering the temple.
As you can imagine, temple presidents
receive numerous letters and emails of
advice, counsel and comment. We
recently came across the following
prayer which we share with you.

Presidents’ Message

A Prayer for Kehilla Presidents
Adonai, please grant our
synagogue presidents clear vision
to see the hidden challenges that
lie ahead, both far ahead and
those that lie hidden in front of
their noses, but no one seems to
notice. Grant our presidents
excellent hearing to hear your
guidance whether it comes from
the heavens, a burning bush, or
from the mouths of board
members they disagree with.
Adonai, please grant our
presidents patience. While they
want to get things done quickly
and we admire their drive, help
them understand that they need
to get the rest of the board and
congregation to be on board. And
please show board members and
congregants that they must help
the president, because he or she
cannot do it all. Finding money, as
always, remains a challenge for
presidents, so help them find all
the untapped assets that their
kehilla possesses.
Adonai, please grant our
presidents the strength to do
what must be done for the good
of the kehilla, even if it is
unpopular. And give them the
stamina to endure the numerous
meetings and telephone calls
that go with the job.
And finally, Adonai, your name is
eternal, but that doesn’t mean
board meetings should be.
Please help our presidents keep
meetings collaborative,
productive and short.
We, your temple presidents, are
fortunate to have a caring and
dedicated board, a wonderful partner
in Rabbi Harari and a supportive
congregation.
We wish you a Happy and Healthy
New Year.
