ELISAVA Since 1961
Established in 1961, it is the first design school launched in Spain. As a pioneer, ELISAVA has established methodologi-cal guidelines which have served as a starting point for other schools.
The School was founded thanks to the effort of a group of professionals and cultural intellectuals (theorists, archi-tects and designers) concerned about the teaching of design and committed to social and cultural modernisation. This group defined a leading edge work-ing line distinguished by joining aca-demic rigour with the profession, which continues in effect today.
Throughout its trajectory, the role of ELISAVA has been decisive in forging the design culture in Catalonia and Spain. This is the case for various rea-sons. Many of the professionals work-ing in the design world were educated at ELISAVA, but since its inception it has been an open platform for anyone who has something new, intelligent and thoughtful to propose.
Very prominent figures have spoken at the School. Lecturers, speakers and collaborators have contributed to make ELISAVA a benchmark school where rigour, innovation and future outlook go hand in hand with creativity and technology.
At ELISAVA we have a track record of 50 years committed to open, flexible and multidisciplinary teaching and re-search, strongly geared toward the pro-fessional world, driving close collabora-tions with companies, institutions and universities around the world.
Based on our solid record of accom-plishment as pioneers in teaching de-sign and engineering, we continue con-tributing to the training of high-profile professionals.

STUDYING IN ONE OF THE EUROPEAN DESIGN CAPITALS
Barcelona is a city with an open and cos-
mopolitan spirit that offers its inhabitants
great quality of life. The city has become
one of the most attractive European cit-
ies in terms of quality of life, thanks to its
excellent academic, cultural and leisure of-
fer, its safety, the efficiency of its transport
and healthcare services, and an attractive
climate for enjoying the sea and mountain
year-round.
Barcelona is also famous as a city that
lives by and for design. Design is pervasive
in its urban landscape and museums, art
galleries, exhibition halls and showrooms,
not to mention restaurants, bookstores
and all types of establishments, which
exude their own identity thanks to their
furniture, lighting, commercial signs, etc.
The city is a real magnet for creatives and
designers from around the world, who feel
attracted by the latest trends and know
that the ecosystem nestling the system is
also a stimulus for their creativity.
All this makes the city one of the top Euro-
pean destinations for students.
ELISAVA’s headquarters are located in La
Rambla, in the very heart of Barcelona, a
few metres from the Mediterranean Sea,
in one of the most emblematic areas of
the city, recognised internationally for its
vitality as well as its historical and cultural
value. La Rambla, the Gothic quarters,
buildings, museums, shops and many of
the city’s attractions are walking distance
form ELISAVA. Any destination of interest
is accessible by public transportation in
very little time.
This privileged location enriches ELISAVA
and fills it with cultural vitality. This loca-
tion offers students proximity to the his-
toric Barcelona centre which, in turn, is
also the most vibrant and effervescent.
The ELISAVA facilities are therefore the lo-
cated in the ideal epicentre from where to
explore the corners of this city, worldwide
design and architecture benchmark.

EDUCATION FORTACKLING FUTURE CHALLENGES
Our academic mission is to offer university
training that prepares our students to take
on professional challenges at an interna-
tional scale, driving the relationship of our
community with the business fabric, the
institutions and society at large.
At ELISAVA we address these challenges
and we do so through a school model
which is unique in Spain. One of ELISAVA’s
clear differentiators is the interaction be-
tween design and engineering in the same
school. This dovetailing ensures a holistic
outlook where creativity and technology
co-exist with innovation in design and en-
gineering.
Currently, these disciplines have to con-
front a series of key conditions with vari-
ous implications, equally affecting crea-
tive and technological processes (new
communication platforms, new design
needs, new technologies, new materials,
social commitments, etc.). Each of these
areas inspires and makes up design and
industrial design engineering, but nei-
ther provides, separately, the necessary
knowledge for acting responsibly and
address the various levels of complexity
that are presented. The interaction that
takes place between communication,
product, technology and architecture at
ELISAVA allows us to comprehensively
address the design process, from con-
ceptualisation and project rendering all
the way to development.
Lecturers and collaborators who teach
at ELISAVA boast extensive teaching and
professional experience, they are aware
of new developments in their respective
industries and are capable of giving our
students a feel for workplace reality. This
is the only explanation for why we have
over 700 lecturers and collaborators for
2,000 students.
ELISAVA’s main value resides in the high
quality of knowledge attained, but also in
the networks of professional and interna-
tional relations that support the school.
As explained in further detail below, we
promote constant interaction with the
social and business fabric. This allows us
to create real learning situations, promote
research projects with companies and im-
plement a professional work experience
programme and a permanently active job
pool. In addition to these values, students
should add the advantage of belonging to
a community of recognised prestige, such
as ours, with an outstanding network of
professionals, many of whom have been
trained at the School.
Likewise, ELISAVA’s commitment is to
provide the students with a universal un-
derstanding of the cultures of design and
engineering. There are multiple factors in-
volved: the existence of a verifiable inter-
national student exchange programme;
visiting professors as part of our educa-
tional project; the activities and lecture
programme, involving internationally rec-
ognised professionals; courses in English
during the third and fourth years; and the
existence of courses that provide the abil-
ity to interpret the current socioeconomic
context internationally.
In our classrooms, the real protagonist
is the student. And the aim of our lectur-
ers is to motivate them to fully assume
problem-solving capabilities. We believe
that active development of students is the
basic premise for a good education.
The teacher acts as tutor, advising stu-
dents, providing them with experience,
coaching them to find the best meth-
ods and select materials and sources of
learning, detecting possible gaps in their
knowledge and enhancing their individual
capacities.
Our methodology is based, on the one
hand, on the vocational school concept
where students learn by manipulating ma-
terials. And on the other hand, it is based
on the need to constantly foster reflection
and discussion on what we do. For us, a
school should be a place for research and
exchange of knowledge and skills, a space
of expression and action that encourages
personal development through academic
and collaborative activity. We do not wish
for this knowledge and these skills to be
limited to the university environment.
They must be able to transform this
knowledge into social development.
Research in our sector plays a key role
when it comes to providing solutions to the
great challenges facing modern society,
becoming essential to meet the innova-
tion needs demanded by contemporary
society. It is no for just any reason that we
always say that creativity — or specula-
tive actions associated with design — are
a crucial basis for determining the new
possible scenarios, for generating new re-
alities. Undoubtedly, the combination of
creative design and technological creativ-
ity allow us to fully exploit the possibilities
of research. In this regard, and for more
than a decade, ELISAVA develops research
projects applied to design and engineering.
I it does so from a programme that acts as
an essential mechanism for connecting
with the world of business and institutions.
Research carried out is based on interdis-
ciplinary collaborations, which are closely
linked to studies carried out. Our research
is a reflection of the interaction between
communication, product, technology and
space at the School, prompted by a desire
for prospecting which has led to projects
in the field of mobility and transport, retail
design, habitat, public space, sustainability,
visual communication, etc. This research
has been addressed and is addressed from
different innovative viewpoints: the new
challenges represented by the revolution of
materials and their application to design,
the possible applications of new technolo-
gies in the creation of new products and the
detection of new real usage needs.
In order for skills and knowledge acquired
to be recognised and easily validated
throughout Europe, the School’s academ-
ic programmes are structured in ECTS
credits and competencies, which are the
main pedagogic requirements of the Eu-
ropean Higher Education Area. These are
level indicators which are understood in-
ternationally and which likewise reflect
a methodological change, based on stu-
dents’ new active role.
The ECTS system is based on the stu-
dent’s hours of work both inside and out-
side the classroom, and the competencies
stipulate what the student should be able
to do. Since they come from outside the
academic world, these terms —qualifi-
cations and skills— provide a constant
dialogue with the professional world and
promotes international mobility, both for
students who want to enjoy an off-campus
experience and for those who just gradu-
ated and want to enter the European la-
bour market.

SINCE 1961: THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCEOur over 50 years of experience speak for themselves. During these decades we have contributed to build a design culture in Spain and have become an academic benchmark and a platform for opinions and exchange of ideas between professionals of this discipline. We have known how to renew our academic offer and methodology to address academic needs well into the future. Our pedagogic method enhances the professional development of students, to the point that projects undertaken are awarded and recognised worldwide. Over 50 years garnering awards.

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
ELISAVA trains future professionals, al-
ways keeping in mind not only specialisa-
tion in their field of knowledge, but also
personal development. The School has al-
ways been committed to a pioneer system
of a teaching community based on three
pillars: a body of over 700 working profes-
sionals; an internal team of academics,
doctors linked to the world of design, en-
gineering, architecture, communication,
etc.; and a diverse group of renowned
experts in the business world, who can
convey their expertise and turn them into
basic skills for our students. All of their
experience combines with their extensive
teaching experience. Their close ties with
the professional world enables our stu-
dents to broaden their horizons, always
with a specific and open vision of the reali-
ties shaping modern society.
It is an open, diverse and cosmopolitan
network of co-workers for a total of 2,000
students. Lecturers teach small groups,
where classes are converted into me-
ticulous follow-up tutorials. The theory
and practice are taught through real-life
projects, while teachers highlight the lat-
est workplace developments. The conver-
gence of this melting pot of cultures and
identities inspires creativity and encour-
ages new ideas.
Students hone their talents and critical
thinking not only in the classroom. ELISAVA
classes also include visits to companies
and institutions, onsite projects, presenta-
tions, discussion, etc. various methodolo-
gies where the city becomes a laboratory
for exploration and analysis.
We teach to learn, innovate, observe and
investigate to respond to the needs of a
changing global society.

INTERNATIONAL OUTLOOK
Cooperation with universities in differ-
ent countries is one of the essential fea-
tures of ELISAVA’s educational project.
Exchange and mobility of students and
lecturers enrich the university experi-
ence, and the School promotes them by
establishing networks with international
schools that also include the development
of joint teaching, research and coopera-
tion programmes.
The value of this interchange lies in the
two-way exchange involved. We believe
that the diversity of profiles and perspec-
tives provided by students from around
the world enriches ELISAVA. The School
therefore actively promotes diversity for
the benefit of an increasingly more diverse
and dynamic community.
ELISAVA’s international presence has in-
tensified throughout its history, as it has
consolidated its academic prestige. For
us, the knowledge of other cultures, other
ways of approaching disciplines taught by
ELISAVA, is a basic asset in training stu-
dents. The School therefore offers partici-
pation in exchange programs in which stu-
dents can compare other learning meth-
odologies in different countries.
ELISAVA has established agreements with
more than 70 schools worldwide —Europe,
the Americas, Asia and Australia— and it
participates in various exchange, research
and cooperation programmes with inter-
national academic institutions. The expe-
rience allows us to confirm that the ben-
efit is twofold: it favours the circulation of
knowledge and improves the teaching of
disciplines taught by the School.
This international outlook is reflected in the
Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, where
more than 40% of students come from
other countries. To meet this demand, the
School also offers continuing education
programmes taught entirely in English.

The training provided by ELISAVA allows
students to comply with the new Euro-
pean university studies framework with all
the skills necessary to move internation-
ally. But this mobility is only possible with
a good knowledge of other languages, es-
pecially English. The School evaluates and
promotes its students’ multilingualism
through various strategies.
During the third and fourth year, specific
English terminology and English-language
projects, in addition to activities and work-
shops in English and the possibility of tak-
ing electives in English.
The knowledge of languages and techni-
cal English will be included in the Diploma
Supplement.
Through international programs such as
Visiting University, Study Abroad or mas-
ter’s and postgraduate programmes taught
entirely in English, and in collaborations
with international universities, students
from around the world visit us every aca-
demic year to enjoy a very special and in-
tensive educational experience. In the case
of the Visiting University and Study Abroad
programmes, the content of each program
is prepared according to the needs of each
participant. Their programming can include
all areas taught by ELISAVA.
This is a way of inviting students from
around the world to participate in the
ELISAVA project and thus promote interac-
tion and cultural exchange.
ELISAVA’s international outlook is ex-
pressed through various partnerships
and programs. The School is part of the
Cumulus Network, which brings together
the main institutions of the field of design
worldwide with the aim of promoting inter-
national cooperation. It is also a member
of the International Association for the
Exchange of Students for Technical Experi-
ence (IAESTE). In addition, ELISAVA works
with the Council on International Educa-
tional Exchange, a non-profit organisation
designated by the US State Department
to manage international student exchange
programmes. The School also participates
in the LifelongLearning/Erasmus Pro-
gramme, promoted by the European Union
with the aim of bringing students closer to
Europe and Europe closer to students.
Moreover, ELISAVA has signed bilat-
eral agreements that allow it to extend
its range beyond the European context.
These agreements are under constant re-
view, and we are constantly working to add
new destinations.
Exchange and mobility of students and lecturers enrich the university experience. Studying at ELISAVA opens your horizons to new academic worlds.

IMMERSION IN THE BUSINESS WORLD
The relationship between the university
and the rest of society is witnessing a real
revolution. More and more people, com-
panies and institutions come in contact
with the university community and estab-
lish innovative forms of co-operation with
great potential.
In this context, in recent years, design
and engineering have been developed to
become one of the most established and
most promising areas. Innovation, creativ-
ity and application of current technologies
are core values for our society. ELISAVA
has thus consolidated its relations with
the business sector.
The School particularly values its links
with organisations and institutions, since
they are where our students will develop
their careers. Every day we expand and
consolidate these ties, and define more
enriching joint working structures enrich-
ing for employees and collaborating enti-
ties, and for our School.
This effort results in stable partnerships
with leading companies. This network of
relationships is the result of the extension
and adaptation of different models of co-
operation to the needs of companies and
our own students.
Companies approach the School in search
of alternatives to traditional sources of
business innovation. By studying the crea-
tion of new options that have not yet been
considered, we can design to business
components. Moreover, these projects of-
fer companies the opportunity of identify-
ing the brightest students, while ELISAVA
can meet the demand for innovative talent
required by companies.
ELISAVA’s extensive network of companies and institutions allows students to obtain professional work experience in various types of organisations. The pool of internships makes it easy for companies to evaluate students and consider the possibility of hiring them.
Companies approach the School in search of alternatives to traditional sources of business innovation.
22
Maintaining direct contact with various sectors is vital for maintaining our academic proposal up-to-date.
23
Our job pool is open to all graduates and is managed online, so you will be able to check it easily once you have completed your studies.
24
Professional work experience, as well as
knowledge of the industry and the mar-
ket, are a great added value for our stu-
dents, who enjoy the activities organised
by ELISAVA and the agreements estab-
lished with companies and institutions.
These projects aim to reflect the potential
of interaction between the university and
companies in the development of real-life
projects. They promote student learning
and allows them to acquire experience in
the workplace. Also, they provide the com-
pany the opportunity of getting answers to
their specific needs in the dynamic, inno-
vative and creative university context. The
co-operation with organisations is an es-
tablished methodology at ELISAVA since
its inception.
Through co-operation with companies and
institutions, students acquire practical
skills and methodologies for developing
innovative products, and tools for antici-
pating trends, and develop their skills in de-
veloping social, user and brand strategies.
In short, they gain experience to improve
the world through design and engineering.
At ELISAVA we collaborate with a wide ar-
ray of business and institutional industries,
public and private, all the way from multina-
tionals to small, local institutions.
In this area, our co-operation stems from
a need or problem detected by the com-
pany and presented to ELISAVA. A team
is then created, comprising teachers and
students, which will work in a dynamic
environment to generate ideas and con-
cepts. The proposals will evolve into real
projects that will meet the need. It is a
different way of dealing with learning that
allows the company to gain from the uni-
versity’s methodology and creativity, while
students begin to take steps in a profes-
sional environment. The workshop format
has been well-established as a methodol-
ogy at ELISAVA for over fifty years.
ELISAVA boasts the highest rate of stu-
dent employment among university
schools. The School maintains links with
a wide network of companies and institu-
tions, from small design studios to large
multinationals that will allow professional
internships. Students thus enjoy the op-
portunity of a valuable experience that
allows them to contextualise everything
they have learned at ELISAVA facilitate
their entry into the workplace.
Internships are possible through the
signing educational co-operation agree-
ments, and they can be curricular or non-
curricular. Curricular internships allow
students to get academic credit for the
period they have spent in a given com-
pany. For businesses, the internship pool
is a practical opportunity to evaluate stu-
dents who may later be hired as part of
their professional teams.
It is a complete and flexible service avail-
able to all school graduates. The job pool
studies, classifies and responds to the
demands from companies looking to hire
professionals as direct hires or as freelance
collaborators on specific projects.
This service is provided online. We thus pro-
vide students with effective access to busi-
ness offers after graduation.
ELISAVA’s educational offer is also aimed
at companies and institutions that wish
to adapt to the continuous economic and
cultural changes in our society. The School
believes that this adaptation is essential to
transform changes into opportunities for
growth and professional improvement.
Every organisation knows its own train-
ing needs, the knowledge that will enable
them to improve their ability to respond
and adapt to new scenarios and new op-
portunities.
ELISAVA’s In-Company Training pro-
gramme offers the world a professional
training tool that suits the needs of each
company or institution. The courses are
tailored to the demands of the applicants,
who must define various parameters:
• The selection of basic content according
to their needs.
• The selection of dates and hours per
week depending on the availability
of workers.
• The decision to holding classes at their
facility or at ELISAVA.
The In-Company Training programme al-
lows us to test professionals and guide
them towards new approaches and op-
portunities in the areas of Graphic Design
and Communication, Product Design,
Spatial Design and Architecture, Strategy
and Management, Interaction Design and
Design for Food.

ELBULLIFOUNDATIONELISAVA elBULLI Challenge
Research & Innovation Lab
Research Project
This was a response to the challenge
ELBULLIFOUNDATION presented ELISAVA
for working together on the ElBulli DNA
and elBulli 1846 project. The School put
the creative talent of its students to work
for generating intensive and open ideas as
the groundwork for future scenarios. The
aim of this initiative was to stimulate en-
riching thought processes that would lead
to new situations, avoiding premature con-
jectures and advancing from a situation of
uncertainty through research and experi-
mentation. It broke the typical schemes
on the concept of both research areas and
visitor areas, creating new experiences
or other narrative possibilities of what a
cultural space can be. Through collabora-
tive and multidisciplinary efforts, multiple
proposals were generated to project new
possible scenarios. The new concepts have
been recorded in a series of audiovisual el-
ements: the no limit experience, seasonal
museum, new entrance ticket concept,
manifesto for an interior design tailored for
elBulli and transformation of data gener-
ated by visitors and elBulli into interactive
systems and experiences.

ELISAVA: A GREAT COMMUNITY
ELISAVA students come from beyond our
borders, and the School becomes a meet-
ing point for all cultures. People from
many different countries converge in our
facilities, turning our classrooms, work-
shops and laboratories into spaces where
creativity and innovation flourishes.
With students from all continents, ELISAVA
is an exciting place to study, work and
learn. The multidisciplinary nature of the
education offered by the School also al-
lows students from different disciplines
and at different levels to share, educate
themselves and work together on multi-
disciplinary projects.
Likewise, both the students and the
School organise activities, conferences
and exhibitions outside school hours aim-
ing to encourage participation and learn-
ing and strengthen relationships between
ELISAVA community members.
Aiming to keep ELISAVA’s doors open
once students have completed their
studies, Elisava Alumni, the Association
of ELISAVA former students, was created
in 2003 (www.elisavalumni.com). This or-
ganisation aims to encourage alumni to
stay in touch and progress professionally
and help them keep a close relationship
with the School and smooth communi-
cation with other sector professionals.
Throughout the year, ELISAVA Alumni
develops different kinds of activities: lec-
tures, round tables, professional confer-
ences, idea markets, etc., which enrich
the everyday living of their professionals.
30
The promotion of activities complementary to studies strengthens the links between the academic and business worlds.
31
ACTIVITIES TAILOREDTO YOUR NEEDS
In order to streamline ELISAVA’s daily ac-
tivity and strengthen its role in promoting
and disseminating knowledge related to
design and engineering, the School annu-
ally organizes various activities that com-
plement its educational work.
In some cases framed within educa-
tional programmes themselves, and
sometimes undertaken as initiatives in
parallel to daily activities, an average
of 100 activities are carried out during
the year which are complementary to
educational activity, including lectures,
presentations, exhibitions, specialisation
and career orientation days, professional
forums, workshops and conferences, in-
volving prominent national and interna-
tional personalities in the field of design,
communication, architecture and engi-
neering and attracting more than 4,000
people annually.
These activities stimulate day-to-day
life at the School and reinforce the role
of ELISAVA as a cultural promoter, ex-
panding the education provided in the
classroom. This is a simple and natural
formula for combining education and a
spirit of enjoyment, encourage personal
growth and a sense of belonging to our
School, continue sharing projects and in-
terests outside the classroom and better
understand our colleagues.
This initiative allows, through different
scenarios, to bring students closer to a
professional environment, and letting
experts show them the professional,
economic and social reality of the vari-
ous industries associated with our field
of learning.
32
Thanks to the effort and work of both
directors of continuing education pro-
grammes and the faculty and staff of the
School, each academic year we can de-
velop a program of about fifty lectures
and enjoy the involvement of profession-
als from various fields linked to the project
culture. This is a unique programme in
Barcelona, due to the intensity and range
of topics covered in relation to graphic
communication, product design, spatial
design, engineering, architecture, busi-
ness and design in general. It is a signifi-
cant, international contribution which in
a very special gives content to our city’s
design statement.
Within the wide range of international
ELISAVA lectures, can find such renowned
names like Ferran Adrià, Javier Mariscal,
Paula Scher from Pentagram, Rich Roat
from the House Industries studio, Irma
Boom, Andrew Stevens, Catrin Vagnemark,
Katsumi Komagata, Dani Freixes, Alejandro
Díaz, Anita Cooney, Ruedi Baur, Jorge Wa-
gensberg, Josep Bunyesc, Harriet Posner,
Beatriz Colomina, Torsten Massek, Laura
Alejo, Albert Jan-Pool, Tony Brook from
SPIN and Belén Torregrosa, among others.
The constant activity generated by
ELISAVA, through its various training pro-
grammes and research and innovation
projects with companies is reflected in a
unique calendar of exhibitions inside and
outside the School’s headquarters. This is
a very positive way of sharing and commu-
nicating creativity and knowledge arising
from the work of students and teachers,
appropriately through the medium of ex-
hibitions, so closely linked to design.
With the aim of channelling the creativ-
ity that permeates every corner of the
School, the ELISAVA Theatre Group was
founded in 2006. The group has become
a community cohesion project that goes
beyond the image of a university thea-
tre group. Rigorous and ambitious, this
group is led by professionals from the
show world and is a good example of how
great-quality theatre can also come from
the university level. The group’s have been
reached, as proven by the massive partici-
pation of students, teachers and admin-
istrative staff and services, its in-depth
integration into the School’s image, the
support from the management team and
of course its overwhelming public success.
One of the most recent initiatives of the
ELISAVA community has been the crea-
tion of a gospel choir, which —like the the-
atre group— comprises School students,
faculty members and staff. This group
promotes musical knowledge among its
participants and is preparing its first per-
formances.
33
Every year, ELISAVA attracts recognised professionals who invest part of their time in the Centre’s activity.
The spirit of activities organised in the School is to foster the professional and personal growth of the entire ELISAVA community.
34
35
FOSTERING TALENT: SCHOLARSHIPS AND PRIzES

editions: one for University Degrees stu-
dents and another for Master and Post-
graduate Programmes, called ei! Awards.
Professional Edition.
Among all students, the School selects the
best end-of-year projects with the aim of
stimulating their dedication and competi-
tiveness in society as a whole, especially
in sectors related to design, engineering
and industry. The awarded and finalist
projects are exhibited annually in an exhi-
bition open to all publics. The winners are
awarded grants to continue their educa-
tion in the fields offered by the School.
36
CUTTING-EDGE FACILITIES
ELISAVA’s headquarters boasts 11,000 m2
of facilities that include a range of areas
equipped for teaching, both classrooms
and workshops. These infrastructures accu-
rately address all the demands of ELISAVA’s
educational project and the requirements
of students and teachers.
ELISAVA is designed to help you develop
your projects efficiently and easily. That’s
why the School is open from 8 am to 10 pm
and enforces an open classroom policy to
all its services, so that even when there is
no teaching activity going on, they remain
available to students. Students can use
computer rooms, equipped with all they
need for project work, and workshops and
laboratories specialising in various areas.
Wi-Fi is available throughout the campus.
This favours activity and helps you stay
connected at all times.
The MediaLab is a space for audiovisual
(video, photography, post-production and
editing) and interactive system (augment-
ed reality, immersive environments, natu-
ral interaction) research and production.
This area for applied research and practice
is an educational resource is equipped
with a set of tools and accessories needed
for scientific research and technological
experimentation.
The Graphic Workshop allows experi-
mentation in different manipulation tech-
niques or printing (either handcrafted,
mechanical or digital) involved in creating
prototypes or models of graphical objects.
This area offers students the ability to
manipulate, modify and experiment with
materials for educational purposes, for
representational, expressive or verification
purposes. The workshop is equipped with
machines and tools for working mainly
on wood and its derivatives, polyurethane
foam, metals, plastics and resins. It offers
different services involving digital manu-
facturing, laser cutting and engraving, 3D
printing and CNC milling, and it has a paint
cabin, foam and plastic turning and a ma-
chine for thermoforming plastics.
The School has 11 classrooms equipped
with MAC and PC software with the specif-
ic programs required for their design and
engineering studies. To provide support,
we have a Customer Care Centre (CAU)
open during School hours.
ELISAVA has allocated specific areas of its
facilities for specific projects related to the
world of business and research. These are
real and programme-related projects that
require a space for the creation, in line
with idea laboratories. The workshops are
held as a complementary activity to stud-
ies offered by the university and offer a dif-
ferent way of approaching learning.
ELISAVA students have at their disposal
this multi-purpose space designed for
leisure and work. The walls are slate and
serve as a wall for developing projects
according to student needs. The room is
equipped with a microwave and refrig-
erator for students who bring lunch from
home. Students also have a bar service,
which offers a variety of meals and sand-
wiches that can be enjoyed indoors or out-
doors on the School’s terrace.
ELISAVA’s facilities area a mirror of the
dynamic teaching activities carried out
at the School. In order to exhibit projects
developed by its students, the School
features the Agora Hall, a central hallway
where, year after year, exhibitions take
place in numerous fields.
ELISAVA has annually invites prominent
Spanish and international figures who
share their knowledge with our entire
community through presentations. Most
lectures are recorded and broadcast on
the School’s Livestream channel.
37
SUPPORT FOR ALL SERVICES OFFERED
ELISAVA is a reflection of its students.
Year after year, the school incorporates
new services to expand and promote
the benefits for our students’ personal
and professional development. The
School gives global advice on techni-
cal issues, scholarship applications,
company internships and the choice of
an international destination to pursue
their studies.
OPEN CLASSROOM AND WEEKENDS
ELISAVA students have at their disposal
the specialised areas of the School, oper-
ating under an open classroom policy, and
the assistance of specialised personnel
outside class hours. Likewise, the School
opens some weekends each trimester, co-
inciding with the period prior to exams, so
that students can access materials in the
library, the computer service and the mod-
els and prototypes workshop.
STUDENT SERVICES AND INFORMATION
Its main mission is to address concerns
and questions from students and future
students of the School, and to coach them
throughout their stay. ELISAVA also man-
ages visits to schools, information ses-
sions and open days. The School manages
personal interviews with the various pro-
gramme heads of university degrees and
the programme directors of Master and
Postgraduate programmes.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
ELISAVA has a high degree of internation-
alisation which is evident in the exchange
relationship it has with over exchanges
70 schools in Europe, the Americas, Asia
and Australia. The International Relations
Service promotes and supports the mo-
bility of our students through its various
programmes.
Students entry into the business world is
reflected in the approach of our Bachelor’s
degrees, Master’s degrees and continuing
education. The School encourages stu-
dents to sign up for supervised internships
in companies and institutions. Internships
are carried out under the guidance of tu-
tors who are responsible for ensuring their
quality. They undertake constant monitor-
ing, assisted by the internships unit, which
reports to the Academic Management
Unit. After completing their programme,
students have access to a job pool thanks
to strong links with important Spanish and
international companies.
This department is responsible for pro-
cessing all applications for students’
school transcript and academic history,
and carry out the procedures related to
the different sections (internship pool,
international relations, etc.). It also man-
ages and coordinates teaching activity
and acts as a nexus of relationship-inter-
action between the coordinators, teachers
and students, serving the entire ELISAVA
community.
The development of academic activity in-
volves carrying out many different kinds of
jobs that require the multimedia materials
which the School supplies to students.
In order to improve teaching activity, stu-
dents receive a card at the beginning of
the year with a total number of copies al-
lowed by the School. Likewise, students
can order their own copy projects from
the Centre.
ELISAVA has a web tool for consulting and
reviewing notes, class or exam schedules,
teaching information management, deliv-
ery and collection work, surveys, password
change and recovery, registration docu-
mentation and academic management
information.
Communication is a key factor for linking
together the ELISAVA community. That’s
why every student and every teacher has
a personal e-mail address of the School.
The school gives students a university card
that allows them access to all facilities and
services, and stay connected to the ELISAVA
community, enjoying a plan of benefits and
discounts in various establishments.
For over 25 years, ELISAVA has published
a trilingual scientific journal Temes de Dis-
seny (Design Issues), which contributes
to driving discussion in this sector and
supporting the educational work carried
out. The School also communicates its ac-
tivities and events via e-notes, a bimonthly
newsletter sent to more than 30,000 peo-
ple worldwide.
The School is an active cultural platform.
To get its message out, ELISAVA has a
Livestream channel (new.livestream.com/
ElisavaBCN) that allows users to access
all master classes given by internationally
relevant figures, live or recorded.
ELISAVA provides a storage service that
takes care of the objects owned by School
staff and students.
The Enric Bricall Library is a leading ser-
vice for supporting research, teaching and
investigation, as well as the training of fu-
ture professionals in the worlds of design
and engineering. Its services are available
to the entire ELISAVA community and in-
dustry experts.
It was created in 1988 thanks to the initia-
tive of Enric Bricall, director of the School
during the 1986-1998 period. He was the
driving force behind a library open to differ-
ent areas of design, in order to contribute
to the training of future professionals and
encourage learning and creating. Over all
these years, the library has become a space
of knowledge for the ELISAVA community
and a testament to Enric Bricall’s vision.
The library, linked to the Collective Cata-
logue of Catalan Universities (CCUC),
boasts a collection of more than 9,000
books specialised in the fields of graphic
design, product design, interior design, ar-
chitecture, engineering in industrial design
and building engineering, complemented
with subscriptions to more than 100 jour-
nals worldwide. It also offers online access
the Design and Applied Arts Index and Ma-
tério databases.
The Netvibes site of the Enric Bricall
Library (www.netvibes.com/bibliote-
caelisava) features a selection of free

ELISAVA’s academic project is grounded in its extensive experience: over fifty years of teaching the disciplines of design and engineering, always understood as a modernising and transforming element for society.
41
EDUCATIONAL OFFER WITH GREAT PROSPECTS
ELISAVA is affiliated with Pompeu Fabra
University (UPF), offering official degrees,
the Degree in Design and Degree in Engi-
neering in Industrial Design, as established
by the new European Higher Education
Area. The School also offers Master and
Postgraduate programmes for profession-
al development and the Master’s Degree
in Design and Communication, the first
official design master’s degree in Spain.
Finally, the offer is complemented by a
wide range of specialised courses aimed
at professionals and companies. All these
academic lines aim to address new and
emerging professions and benefit from the
tradition of quality and creative personality
that has brought the School great prestige
over the years.
Being part of ELISAVA means participating
in a dynamic, creative and innovative envi-
ronment where you can learn from the di-
versity of profiles, experiences and cultures
from all those around you.
42
The Degree in Design is a flagship and
long-standing programme, accredited
both by the Pompeu Fabra University and
the University of Southampton, registered
under the “architecture and engineering”
knowledge branch. This programme of-
fers rigorous, in-depth exploration into the
fields of knowledge related to the design
process: creativity, rendering, expression,
technology, economics, strategy, environ-
mental impact, planning, technical devel-
opment, simplification and streamlining
of information, interaction, communica-
tion, relationship with the user and con-
sumption. Thus, throughout their studies,
students acquire the comprehensive skills
to coordinate, integrate and shape all
the factors involved in creating a project.
Likewise, from the third year onwards, stu-
dents can specialise their careers through
a series of optional itineraries comprising
various course modules corresponding
to four specialisations or tracks: Graphic
Design, Product Design, Spatial Design
and Digital Interaction. It should be noted,
as we often, that in the field of product
design, ELISAVA is unique when it comes
to the interaction with the Degree in En-
gineering in Industrial Design. With this
strategic decision, the School bolsters its
interprofessional character, vital for suc-
cessfully addressing the complexity in-
volved in the process of creating, produc-
ing and consuming a product.
The programmes are designed to train
professionals to design, re-design, man-
age and develop products; engineers who
can turn a design idea into an industrial
solution; professionals trained to man-
age the entire life cycle of an industrial
product, giving special importance to new
materials and technological integration
to find new product environments; engi-
neers capable of reducing the uncertainty
in decision-making related to investment
made by companies or product-gener-
ating organisations; experts who under-
stand design as an analytical, technical
and strategic process that leads to deter-
mine a suitable product at the right time;
engineers ready to meet the demands of
a highly competitive international market;
professionals with the multidisciplinary
perspective necessary to create and de-
velop products that can be applied indus-
trially, which contribute to the business of
exports and enhance competitiveness in
highly regulated markets.
ELISAVA programmes focused on the field
of product development constitute a clear
example of the interprofessional nature
which characterises the School, where
one of the most significant traits is the in-
teraction between engineering and design.
This gives rise to programmes such as De-
gree in Engineering in Industrial Design,
the double degree as designer and engi-
neer (simultaneous curriculum between
degrees), or the set of continuing educa-
tion courses in Design and Product, taught
at ELISAVA.
ELISAVA has recently taken a step forward
and have offered a Simultaneous Studies
between qualifications in order to provide
Bachelor’s students the chance to obtain
a double degree in Design and Engineering
in Industrial Design. These two disciplines
are complementary. On the one hand, De-
sign studies foster students’ creativity by
instilling a thoughtful vision of society and
providing strategic responses to global
problems. On the other hand, Engineer-
ing in Industrial Design studies essentially
aim at developing technical proficiencies,
providing the required tools to physically
and efficiently carry out the design of the
product in question. This complementari-
ty is very high and, likewise, it is especially
valuable in the workplace, which increas-
ingly seeks professional profiles that can
comprehensively take on the design and
product development sides of a project.
Students in this dual track will acquire
skills that are clearly desired by the busi-
ness world, and they complete their edu-
cation as engineers and designers, which
stands out as a unique, necessary and
future-proof proposal.
43
The Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary
Studies in Design and Communication, is-
sued by Pompeu Fabra University, and the
first accredited program of its kind in the
country, offers advanced training in com-
munication. The MUDIC is an advanced
specialised programme, which aims at
professional specialisation and introduc-
tion to research activities. The Master’s
Degree equips professionals and research-
ers with the necessary skills to develop ap-
plications in any medium, enabling the de-
signer and communicator for the design
of communication strategies and effective
messages in multi-platform mediums. It is
important to remember that the Master’s
Degree in Design and Communication
could lead to a PhD programme.
In order to promote professional develop-
ment and the acquisition of new knowl-
edge and skills, and hone existing abilities,
ELISAVA created the area of masters and
postgraduate diplomas a decade ago.
This programme, since its inception, has
grown gradually and currently has such
a high degree of maturity that it is able to
offer over 20 masters and 40 postgradu-
ate diplomas of very high quality related
to professional practice in any design and
engineering field, all designed to address
an increasingly more dynamic and chang-
ing professional reality. The programme
offer is structured around six main ar-
eas: Graphic Design and Communica-
tion, Product Design, Spatial Design and
Architecture, Strategy and Management,
Interaction and Design for Food, with pro-
grammes that combine generic and tech-
nical content, which have varying degrees
of specialisation and which boast the
added value of offering professional work
experience in companies, facilitating stu-
dents’ employability.
All this represents a wide range of possibili-
ties including, to cite some examples, from
concept generation and subsequent prod-
uct development to devising an advertising
campaign and the creation of a technical
project for a space in movement. And all
this takes place in an educational environ-
ment which in parallel promotes the de-
velopment of professional competencies
which are very important in the modern
workplace, with a distinctly practical train-
ing boasting a faculty of professionals rec-
ognised for the quality of their work.
ELISAVA organises the Summer Experi-
ence annually, a wide range of speciali-
sation design programmes during the
months of July and September, allowing
students to develop their creativity and
skills while improving their knowledge in
areas as varied as lighting, photography,
ephemeral spaces, etc. The School also
offers, together with Central Saint Mar-
tins, the Dual City Summer Courses, pro-
grammes offered between London and
Barcelona and focused on matters relat-
ing to art and design.
Design is an increasingly complex profes-
sion which is active in many areas, at a
time when the boundaries between the
traditional areas of expertise are blurring.
Designers should be able to feel comfort-
able in all areas of this broad market and
have expert knowledge on the range of
services they can offer. For this reason,
ELISAVA offers its Study Abroad 15-week
programme entirely in English, offering
students an overview of design and the
new opportunities it offers.
ELISAVA offers international academic
centres the opportunity of complement-
ing their training with courses designed
to meet their academic and curricular
requirements: the Visiting University. In
recent years, the School has had the par-
ticipation of students from institutions
coming from a great range of countries,
including the United States, Dubai, China,
Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican
Republic.
