Electrolysis
Jarod Coulter
• An electrolytic cell uses electrical energy to produce a change
• Electrolysis is forcing a current through a cell to produce a chemical change for which the cell potential is negative
Uses
• Charging batteries• Chrome plating• Producing certain metals• Breaking apart water
• 1 ampere = 1 coulomb of charge a second
• Using this information some stoichiometry can be done
Sample Problems
Water (the exception to everything)
• Needs a salt to be added for electrolysis due to so few ions in the water (hard for a current to pass through)
• It takes more voltage to oxidize water, this is called overvoltage.
• It is hard to say where it comes from, some difficulties transferring electrons, scientists think.
