Celebrating 21st Birthday in 2018
May 2019 #29
In just under two months I will turn the page and hand-off the PMI HK Chapter presidency baton. Leading the Chapter has been a fun, educational, sometimes exciting, sometimes challenging, al-ways interesting experience that I highly recommend. My experience as Chapter president these six years has been good because of the fantastic people I’ve had the privilege to work with in this role. Thank you to all the Chapter leaders and volunteers!.
Together the Chapter leadership team and volunteers have worked hard to serve the profession in Hong Kong through strong and relevant programming, conferences, facilitating connections, and through providing leadership development opportunities. I believe the Chapter is well positioned to continue to deliver on its mission and help our members to succeed
We focus on the Chapter’s Core values and strategies to increase awareness and adoption of best project manage-ment practice; develop, nurture and sustain our professionals; and continuously engage, collaborate and outreach to our members
What have we accomplished over the past couple years? Just to name a few, we held our regional congress in
Hong Kong every year. This provides an excellent platform for sharing of knowledge, networking, and leadership
development for our volunteers and executive team. We organized training to universities, corporations and the
public to promote best practice and professional development. We conducted award competitions to promote
awareness and adoption. We facilitated our members on the PhD research surveys. We also started our coaching
programs for teenagers in a number of high schools for three years, which yielded wonderful results
Last but not the last, we successfully established a Chapter incorporate and formed a new PMI Hong Kong Chapter
Limited which signifies a new beginning of our well-established chapter. Looking back when the Chapter was first
started with five members, we are proud to have grown into a 1,400 plus members Chapter and have over 6,600
certificate holders in Hong Kong
Thank you to the membership for giving me the opportunity to serve you as president of the Chapter. Please don’t
hesitate to contact me or any leadership team member if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. I can
be reached at 9125 9090 or at [email protected]

PMI Melbourne Conference 2018
PMI Australia Conference 2018
By Janet Yu, VP Certification
The PMI Australia Chapters have put together a 2-day annual national conference on 22 May 2018 in Melbourne,
Australia, with close to 300 delegates who attended. This year’s theme “Diversity, Performance, Wellbeing” is un-
derpinned by four streams: i) Project Trends and Innovations, ii) the PMI Talent Triangle™ skills of Leadership, iii)
Technical, iv) Strategy and Business. The conference featured 50+ speakers who are industry leaders, influencers
and scholars to provide insights into various aspects of project management and the latest ideas that may affect
businesses today and tomorrow.
The conference organizing committee believes that “Through embracing diversity, focusing on performance out-
comes and making time for wellbeing, successful project results can be achieved.”
Session Highlights
Diane Samaroo and Forum Metpally from Ericsson spoke about how Ericsson takes pride in
endorsing the belief that a varied and representative workforce can generate a creative and
productive environment, an environment where every member feels equally valued.
In delivering performance and achieving results, Kimberly Wiefling from Silicon Valley Alli-
ances, through some interactive activities, vividly introduced some simple methods in prac-
ticing scrappy design thinking.
Chee-Peng Tan’s talk on Superior Performance Leadership 4.0 Through Diversity & Wellbe-
ing explained how future leaders should master the Industry 4.0 enablers to transform their
business in the digital economy, and how Industry 4.0’s project managers should delegate the
machine-possible activities and put more focus on people and the soft side of project manage-
ment to deliver better project results.

Other Conference Highlights
To keep accurate track of the delegates at the sessions in the 2-day conference, a
small IoT device was attached to the name badge distributed together with the
conference package. All the conference rooms were equipped with a reader so no
more scanning and queuing up were required at the entrance. This simple mecha-
nism showcased how technology could be applied to streamline a process to pro-
vide a better user experience.
Chee-peng Tan
Another interesting feature of the conference was
the visual scribing by Paul Telling who helped cap-
ture three of the key sessions in creative form real-
time.
All in all, it was a fruitful two days with a well
worked out list of diversified topics and speakers.
Delegates have learned more about the changing
business landscape, acquired practical skills on im-
proving project performance, networked and
shared knowledge with peer professionals, academ-
ics and community representatives.

2018 PMI Taiwan International Congress (PTIC), 10 to 11 November 2018
By Alex Sin, VP Young PM Development
The PMIHK Chapter executive was represented at the Con-
gress by Christine Yau—EVP, Janet Yu - VP Certification, and
Alex Sin—VP Young PM Development. The 2018 PTIC is the
most important annual event for the PMI Taiwan Chapter.
Here is my summary of the Congress theme messages:
We agreed that only cross-field talents would survive the tech-
nology impact and be able to master the future. From this
event, we recognize that AI is no longer in lab work but already
part of our daily life. People may wonder if some of our jobs
will be replaced by AI. However, the challenges ahead will
bring us more opportunities because more changes and inno-
vations mean more projects to do and more project manage-
ment involved. We should concentrate more on how to get
ourselves ready when the opportunities come. The topics in-
clude Top Ten Outstanding Project Managers, the trends and
applications of AI, the Agile Practices, and the international
experiences of project management.
