IntroductionThis Insights Discovery profile is based on Elaine Strathern’s responses to the InsightsPreference Evaluator which was completed on 25 November 2015.

The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocratesidentified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built aroundthe model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This modelwas published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings.Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work inunderstanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to thepresent day.

Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understandingand development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths andweaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help themto better respond to the demands of their environment.

Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. Itreports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or deleteany statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identifywhether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.

Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and takeaction. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them onareas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personallyand interpersonally.

OverviewThese statements provide a broad understanding of Elaine’s work style. Use this section to gaina better understanding of her approaches to her activities, relationships and decisions.

Personal Style

Elaine wants to sample the best that life can offer. She has a sense of adventure and likes tokeep her spirits and expectations high. She may become pessimistic and gloomy when she isthwarted or fails to see ways to make the important changes in her life. She tends to have aninterest in the new and unusual and is gifted at expressing her feelings. She will take everypossible opportunity to generate new relationships or to be with others. She flourishes in jobswhere she can be of constant service or use her talent to persuade.

Her obvious charm and enthusiasm tends to make her popular with friends and colleagues alike.Work that is purely practical or work that leaves her on her own for long periods can make herirritable. She should take care to include the practical details in her projects and continually try tolook at situations from an objective viewpoint rather than just her own perception. Her life willtend to be a series of initiated, but unfinished projects. She tends to see the environment aswelcoming, challenging and exhilarating, and if it is not, she tries to create that atmosphere.

Socially adept, even-tempered and tireless in her efforts to bring about peace and well-being,she tends to hold the perfect relationship as the ideal. She pays scant attention to negative, pessimistic or divisive situations or conclusions. She is convinced of her own abilities and isconstantly seeking environments where people will appreciate her. Elaine enjoys work thatprovides variety as she is quick and resourceful and can turn her attention to many things. Heroriginal thinking generates a constant stream of ideas. Elaine seeks greater fulfilment in her lifethrough the offering of help and service to others.

Elaine is team-centred, thorough and articulate. Her vivid imagination constantly pushes hertowards turning her ideas into reality. Her social gatherings are frequent and worth attending, particularly when they mark important events. She is used to doing several things at once, butothers may view some of this as superficial activity. Due to her sociable, friendly andwarm-hearted demeanour, she is best employed in providing practical service to others.

At her best in jobs which deal with people and situations that require co-operative working, shedislikes impersonal tasks and work demanding factual accuracy, unless she can be free toinclude the people factor. Elaine is energetic, enthusiastic, responsible, conscientious andpersuasive. She is strong on initiative and creativity, but may often be weak on the completion ofprojects. Routine is the real bad news for her, and it may sap her energy. Able to cope with anumber of projects at once, Elaine gets a lot of enjoyment from the social aspects of work.

Interacting with Others

Placing a high value on her harmonious relationships, it is not surprising that people turn toElaine for encouragement, nurture and support. An unconditional positive regard for others is astrongly held feeling that Elaine values. As she is highly articulate with a quick sense of humourshe is often the life and soul of the party. Energetic, gregarious and sociable, her intuition

heightens her insight, vision, curiosity and desire for new ideas. She radiates sympathy andunderstanding to all by nurturing and supporting.

Elaine probably prefers more relaxed social interaction. Do not assume this to be an indicationthat she is not serious about important issues. She may dislike and even avoid tasks whichrequire attention to detail or inordinate paperwork. Elaine's ingenuity, warmth and herunderstanding of others allows her to proceed through life with great confidence. She is veryeffective in a leadership role, able to persuade others of the value of her vision. She likes to seekout the company of others and is a good conversationalist. She is at her best in co-operativeroles that deal with people and allow her to air her views.

Elaine has a remarkable ability to get people to follow her lead. She prefers creating a busy andexciting world around her. She does not appreciate critical comments about her personalqualities as she sees these comments as personal attacks on her integrity. Usually verbal andpersuasive, she will seek or wish to withdraw quickly from confrontation unless provoked to theextreme, when she may go “off the deep end” verbally. She is enthusiastic in helping peoplemake the best of themselves and she is proficient in making lots of contacts.

Decision Making

Preferring a harmonious outcome, Elaine will go to great lengths to ensure the preservation ofrelationships. If everyone can be involved in a project, she will ensure that they are. She may getbored quickly and tend to ignore significant detail in her desire to move on to more excitingthings. She may unconsciously manipulate the process to get her own way. She has the ability toappear to listen to other people's viewpoints but may not necessarily be hearing or intending toaction them.

Through her intuitive feeling personality, she may have difficulty in limiting herself to a singleproject and usually prefers to keep many balls in the air. She will tend to be concerned with theeffect that the decision making process, and its result, will have on others. She prefers tasks orprojects which allow flexibility of scheduling. Her direct, sometimes erratic approach tends towork against her being totally consistent on a day to day basis. Elaine will usually encouragedemocratic or even consensus decisions, as opposed to having them imposed autocratically.

She will not allow systems and procedure to stand in the way of what she believes is right. Sherecognises judgements that rely heavily on logical analysis, but then may ignore this in makingher decisions. She is prone to jump to conclusions and may act on assumptions that may wellturn out to be wrong. Elaine's natural curiosity for new ideas will bring new and fresh ways ofthinking to the group. She may be perceived by others as a somewhat impulsive decision maker.

Possible Blind SpotsOur perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who weare onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our lessconscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “BlindSpots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test themfor validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.

Elaine’s possible Blind Spots:

Occasionally Elaine may miss opportunities through a lack of awareness of the need to concludethe planning detail. It is difficult to know what to expect from her next. She would much ratherengage in quick intellectual banter than complete some mundane task or consider spending quiettime on her own. She should try to suppress her automatic good feeling towards people whotreat her well, applying a cooler perception to the reality of the situation.

She could learn to protect herself against closed-mindedness by waiting a few seconds morebefore speaking, giving others the chance to offer input. She tends to ignore her problemsinstead of finding rational solutions for them and needs to try to keep her eyes and mind open aswell as her heart. The desire to remain open and responsive to new challenges can make herappear rather erratic, and appear inconsiderate of the best laid plans and schedules of others. She should be careful not to leap too quickly without considering the consequences, making surethat she completes the tasks she is responsible for before turning to more enjoyable matters. She appears generous, but in reality may have only limited patience for those who aredependent on her.

Her active life keeps her so busy that sometimes she fails to plan ahead. She values fast actionand doing many things at once. When under pressure she may get the job done by cuttingcorners or neglecting quality. She may jump to conclusions or make incorrect assumptions anddecisions too quickly, without gathering all the important facts. Sometimes she is so intent on herown plans that she doesn't stop to listen to what others have to say. While she can be charming, funny and entertaining, occasionally she gives the impression of insincerity.

Opposite TypeThe description in this section is based on Elaine's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often,we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are differentto our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personalgrowth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.

Recognising your Opposite Type:

Elaine’s opposite Insights type is the Observer, Jung’s “Introverted Thinking” type.

Observers are precise, cautious and disciplined and are painstaking and conscientious in workthat requires attention and accuracy. They are objective thinkers, concerned with the rightanswer and will avoid making quick decisions. Elaine may see the Observer as hesitating toacknowledge a mistake or as becoming immersed in researching for data to support an isolatedview.

Observers tend not to trust strangers and will worry about outcomes, their reputation and theirjob. They are reticent about expressing their feelings and Elaine will often see the Observer asunresponsive, cool and uncaring. Observers draw conclusions based on factual data. They maybe slow at producing results, as gathering data is the stimulating part of the job for them.

Observers like to make rules based on their own standards and apply those rules to daily life.Elaine may find herself at odds with Observers due to their private nature and lack of enthusiasmfor social events. Introverted analysis may prevent the Observer from expressing thoughts asreadily as Elaine would wish.
