MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We at Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel are very fortunate to be part ofsuch a vibrant congregation, offering countless opportunities for us to connectwith each other. As president, I am fulfilled and proud when I notice the excitingchanges that have come to our community. It is truly heartwarming to see ourmembers singing beautiful Sephardic melodies, praying at the daily minyans, gathering among other families at the monthly Shabbat dinners, and interactingwith each other at our various events.

Ensuring that the Temple is a meaningful part of every congregant’s life, RabbiSessler, Rabbi David, and Cantor Mizrahi, with help from our staff, our Board of Di-rectors, our committee chairs, our numerous volunteers, Or Chadash Sisterhoodand Men’s Club, all put in countless hours to make Sephardic Temple a place thatis our spiritual, educational and a communal home. I would also like to acknowl-edge our dedicated preschool director, Eva Wysoki, and her entire staff for theirtireless work. After all it’s seeing happy children run around and enjoy their day atECC that makes all our efforts for establishing the preschool worthwhile. It truly is alabor of love. I extend my deepest gratitude to all of them.

That being said, all the hard work of the above individuals is meaningless unless we have support from you,our members. Open yourselves and play a significant part in this amazing community of ours. There are countless opportunities for you to get involved on so many levels. Attend the daily minyan – it’s only 45 minutes in the morning; Attend the adult education programs; Support the beneficial and fun events that havebeen so diligently organized; Become a volunteer in your favorite committee. Not only will you be fulfilled byhelping your community, but you will also be a role model for your children.

There are two ways to look at your temple membership. Membership may be seen as a way to receive services, or it can be viewed as an adoption of the synagogue into your daily lives. Look at Sephardic Templeas one of your family’s most valuable belongings. It not only enhances your existence today, but also helps youmaintain and preserve Judaism in generations to come. It must be nurtured by you so that it survives, strength-ens, flourishes, and provides sustenance to the next generation. L’dor V’ador.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as your president. I hope that my passion for all things SephardicTemple Tifereth Israel and my love for our community will inspire others. Passover is a celebration of the freedom our ancestors dreamed of, fought for, and ultimately won. But even as we give thanks, we are called to look to the future, and the future looks bright my friends.

Let us take a moment to pause and reflect, to embrace our loved ones, and to give thanks for our countlessblessings. My family and I wish you a warm home filled with loved ones, a meaningful Seder, a beautifulspring, and a Passover that reflects the goodness of life. Chag Sameach.

Ben Mehdizadeh, President

MESSAGE FROM RABBI SESSLER

Passover has many nicknames: the festival of the matzoth (in the Torah), thefestival of the spring (in more recent times), and also – “the time of our freedom”

(in the prayer book).

I am writing these words a day after my return from the AIPAC policy conference, which was a spectacular celebration of the Jewish state’s freedom, independenceand fortitude. The speakers at the conference highlighted and stressed Israel’smany achievements, including its economic robustness (Israel was one of thecountries least affected by the global economic crisis during the last half adecade). Culturally, Israeli art is diverse and prolific, achieving international recog-nition and acclaim. Militarily, Israel’s strategic alliance with the US is at its peak. Scientifically, Israel is considered one of the world’s most innovative and dynamic

information technology centers. With all of Israel’s geo-political challenges and existential threats, she is a regionalsuperpower and a powerful player in the international arena on multiple levels.

This year’s AIPAC conference was the best attended in history, with some fourteen thousand people present. One of the things that surprised me, was the diversity of the attendees. There were Hispanic delegates,African-American delegates, Evangelical Christians, and other non-Jewish delegates. I think that these diversegroups attended the conference because Israel is much more than a particularistic national project. Israel is aninspirational and universal story, exemplifying what happens when human beings achieve, through faith and sacrifice, “the victory of possibility over probability”.

With scarce natural resources and surrounded by a sea of enemies, Israel is a vibrant and robust state, despitethe many voices who throughout the years rejected its very plausibility and viability, be it prior to its establish-ment in 1948, before and during its existential wars of 1948, 1967, and 1973, and to the wrath of those whoeven today have the temerity to call for its isolation and eventual dissolution.

Israel’s political resurrection after some 20 centuries in exile, is an unprecedented phenomenon in the history ofhumankind. No scriptural passage captures more forcefully and poignantly this miraculous achievement thanEzekiel’s vision of the dry bones (Ezekiel 37), in which this mystical prophet envisages a group of dry bones scattered in a valley miraculously re-gathered, reintegrated, and re-covered with flesh and skin. Not only doesIsrael exist and survive, Israel thrives. Each time I visit the country I am amazed at how strong it is.

As we sit with our relatives and friends around the Seder table, let us recall how incalculably privileged a eneration we are, to live in an era of Jewish political sovereignty in our spiritual homeland. Let us celebrate and cher-ish the many freedoms that we enjoy as Americans and as Jews, and most importantly – let us thank the Almighty.

Let us celebrate the 20th century’s many exoduses of our families from the darkness of oppression and persecution in unfriendly lands. Let us ponder how we can intensify and deepen our bond with the land andthe people of Israel, and how we can grow in Torah and mitzvoth – our nation’s ultimate mission statement. And let us remember that what our people achieved collectively – the resurrection of the dry bones as envis-aged by the prophet Ezekiel, is also applicable with regard to our personal lives. We too can resurrect withinus shattered emotional limbs and spiritual tissues, reconnect with deadened and numbed aspects of our soul, and start thriving again to the astonishment of others, and despite even our own skepticism and self-doubt.

I leave you with President John F. Kennedy’s reflections about Israel, words articulated more than half a centuryago, yet they still resonate in their poetic pathos as politically contemporary and pertinent for today:

“Israel was not created in order to disappear – Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope, and thehome of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity, nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield ofdemocracy, and it honors the sword of freedom”.

Happy Festival of Freedom,Rabbi Sessler

MESSAGE FROM RABBI DAVID COHEN-HENRIQUEZ

Pesach is the Jewish educator’s holiday ‘par excellence’

The Seder’s main objective is education. We encounter in the Haggadah, multipleapproaches to learning: through music, through text study, through legends andparables, through edible symbols and through questions. The most important thingis to always make it new and relevant. That’s why the rabbis devised this incrediblepedagogical guide, and even encouraged creativity from the individual families, toadd your own ideas to the chain of tradition.

The Haggadah tells us about four children; these can be interpreted as four archetypes, or four types of learners, or even four different stages in a person’s life.

We have the Wise, the Rebellious, the Simple, and the One who doesn’t knowhow to ask questions.

As principal of our Religious School and Rabbi of the youth I feel everyday is a Pesach Seder. Every day we, the educators, have to be creative in the way we are

teaching and continuing our rich traditions. To transmit knowledge from one generation is, of course, our dutyas parents and teachers, but to instill the spirit of love to this knowledge, that’s where the challenge lies.

The Talmud Torah teachers are always looking to find ways to make our teachings engaging and meaningful tothe young generation. We must also appreciate that each child has their own unique experience and they allhave their own individual point of view. There are children who love the religious aspects of our traditionswhile others prefer to study about Israel’s history and the cultural side of Judaism. Both equally interesting, challenging and engaging. There are kids who love the holidays for their traditions and meaning, and there areothers who come for the social aspect, to spend fun times with their friends and family. There are also somewho come because of obligation to their parents and they have to prepare for their bar or bat mitzvah. Thesekids are not rebellious or removed from their heritage; these are the ones who haven’t been exposed to thebeautiful traditions and have not yet learned the richness of their faith. They will!

Modern commentators have added a fifth child: the one who doesn’t come to the Seder anymore. These arethe ones that have left the path of Judaism and don’t feel the connection of belonging. It is our duty as parentsand educators to teach, instill and learn to love our Judaism. Our attitude and approach can, will and must become our sacred mission to help these children, your children, become wise men and women, God-Searchers, spiritual beings, community leaders and proud Jews.

May the knowledge of our ancestors never cease to be transmitted, and may the light of Torah and mitzvotnever depart from the House of Israel. May this Pesach and all the holidays to come bring inspiration to you andyour family to continue this most sacred commandment of them all: to pass it on from generation to generation.

Cynthia and I wish you and all your loved ones a happy and wonderful Seder and may G-d’s blessings giveyou peace and joy as you celebrate our liberation from slavery.

Chag Sameach,Rabbi David Cohen-Henriquez, Talmud Torah Principal

MESSAGE FROM HAZAN MIZRAHI

The celebration of the festival of freedom must be connected with the

commandment “You shall relate it to your child.” The formation and

existence of the Jewish home, as of the Jewish people as a whole, is

dependent upon the upbringing of the young generation, both boys

and girls: the wise and the wicked (temporarily), the simple and the

one who knows not what to ask. Just as we cannot shirk our responsi-

bility towards our child by the excuse that “my child is a wise one;

he will find his own way in life therefore no education is necessary for

him”; so we must not despair by thinking “the child is a wicked one;

no education will help him.” For, all Jewish children, boys and girls,

are “G-d’s children” and it is our sacred duty to see to it that they all

live up to their full potential; and this we can achieve only through a

kosher Jewish education, in full adherence to G-d’s Torah.

Then we all will merit the realization of our hopes: “In the next year may we be free; in the next year may we

be in Jerusalem!” Amen!

I wish you and all your family a Chag Kasher v’Sameach.

The Festival of Pesach, the Season of Our Liberation, comes around every year not merely to remind us of the Liberation of our ancestors from Egyptian bondage, but also to inspire us to strive for a greater

measure of self-liberation from all limitations and distractions. This is the meaning of the highly significant passage

in the Haggadah:

“In every generation a Jew should see himself as though he

personally has been liberated from Mitzrayim [Egypt].”

TALMUD TORAH

Regina Hirsch, Holocaust Survivor, Talks to the Talmud Torah Students

On Thursday, March 20, 2014, fourth through seventh graders spent over one hour listening to the personalstory of survival from Regina Hirsch. For two months now these students have participated in a Holocauststudy program each Thursday. They viewed two films, Paper Clips and The Lady in Number 6. They toured

the new Anne Frank exhibit at the Tolerance Museum. They have conducted research onthe children lost in Terezin and have discussed the hopes andfears children and adults shared each day during the Holo-caust.

Regina Hirsch shared her story to the students. Her memory isvivid, picture perfect, as if this experience happened yester-day. Regina has been speaking to groups for over 60 years andfeels it so very important to share her story so that future gener-ations will understand what happened to 11,000,000 humanbeings. Regina was 12 when she and her family went into hid-ing, but in 1943 they were found in the woods and taken toTerezin. She remembers her mother being taken away with her

younger sister as they left the train. She worked with two other sisters in an ammunitions fac-tory. After liberation and a few years in a displaced personscamp, she and her two surviving sisters came to America.Today they live near each other on Wilshire.

The students asked such wonderful questions and Regina men-tioned that this was the first time she was asked questions bystudents. The one lesson Regina wants the children and all of usto take with us every day is that we need to love every body. Weare all humans no matter what color, size, language or religion. We need to rise above the hatred that caused the mass murder ofmillions of human beings. Meeting Regina Hirsch was a treat forthe students, teachers and parents who attended the talk. We allthank Regina for her time, her story and her grace.

MAURICE AMADO MERIT AWARD FUND

Parents: Apply Now for Your Children to Have a Summer of Fun!Did you know that our Sephardic Temple has aspecial fund that makes awards to young people toattend Jewish summer camps and other Jewishprograms? Many families enjoy this benefit of Temple membership each year–have you consid-ered being one of those families this year?

The awards, made from the Maurice Amado MeritAward Fund, are designed to encourage our youngpeople ages 6 to 24 years old to participate in pro-grams that enrich their Jewish education. The awardsare not based on financial need. All that is required isproof of Temple membership and proof of enroll-ment in a Jewish day camp, a Jewish residentialcamp, an Israel program, or any other organized andsupervised Jewish program; for example, March ofthe Living, youth tours to sites of Jewish importance, and youth leadership development programs.

Jewish camping has been found to be one of themost effective methods of Jewish education, ensuring a Jewish identity in adulthood. It is so ef-fective because it is a complete immersion experi-ence where Jewish values are lived and modeledby the staff, where the rhythm of the week is anchored by Shabbat, and Jewish culture isbrought to life through song, dance, and experientialeducation. There are many fine Jewish overnightand day camps in California that families may wantto consider. A good place to start your explorationof Jewish summer activities ishttp://www.jkidla.org/home.

Merit Award application forms are available onthe Temple website (www.sephardictemple.org),under the heading “Student Awards.” Thedeadline for applying for this summer is April30. Make sure your family takes advantage ofthis Temple benefit!

Completed application should be sent to Vicki Karmona at the Temple Office or e-mailed [email protected].

College Scholarship Awards for Sephardic StudentsStudents who are pursuing higher education as undergraduate or graduate students are eligible toapply for merit-based scholarship awards from ourTemple. Eligibility for these awards is one of thesignificant benefits of membership in our Temple. The awards are not based on financial need.

The funds are distributed according to categories, with preference going to students who are Templemembers themselves or are children or grandchil-dren of Temple members. If funds are available,Sephardic students who do not belong to our Temple may also be granted awards.

The scholarship awards come from funds establishedthrough the generosity and vision of some of our remarkable Temple members. The majority of thefunds come from the Maurice Amado ScholarshipFund. Awards are also made from the MaccabeanFund, the Sephardic Beth Shalom Fund, and theAron Cohen Fund. This last fund is directed at students who are pursuing careers as Sephardicclergy or educators.

Written by Marcia Israel Weingarten

What is the thread weaving together the Rue Tigrane Pacha in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria,Shah Street in the cosmopolitan city of Teheran, and thePuerta de la Mar in the Old Town of Rhodes, once apart of Turkey and now a part of Greece? And what do‘cahk’, ‘toot’' and ‘ashuplados' have in common?

These are names of culinary treats and a taste of theneighborhoods we once called home. “Cahk” is anEgyptian egg and sesame biscuit, “toot” a Persian marzipan delicacy shaped like white mulberries, and “ashuplados” are meringue clouds from the Island ofRhodes. These recipes and recollections, along withseveral hundred other multi-cultural delicacies, willmake up the new edition of Cooking the SephardicWay, the original lovingly produced by the Sisterhoodof Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, in1971. This cook-book has sold several thousand copies throughout theworld during the past 40 years.

Since that time, Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel hasgrown, evolved and become home to a growing num-ber of Jews from throughout the Ottoman lands and theMiddle East, as well as new generations of young fami-lies drawn to the warmth and vibrancy of the commu-nity. Each group has brought with them a cultural andculinary tradition that together create a beautiful ‘saladbowl’ of diversity that makes Sephardic Temple TiferethIsrael such a rich and enriching place to call home.

The ‘Cookbook Group’ has been meeting for the pasttwo years, sharing recipes and traditions from Turkey,Morocco, Rhodes, Iran, Israel, Egypt and South America. Our diversity makes us unique – bringing new flavorsand traditions to the table; always marveling at the simi-larities we share. We continue to collect recipes and arebeginning the process of testing. We are actively seek-ing and requesting your recipes and holiday/life cyclemenus from your respective ‘home’ traditions.

The new cookbook, which we anticipate will includephotographs and stories of our rich cultures, should bea volume that all collectors will want for their library…and ‘foodies’ and cooks of all backgrounds will want intheir kitchen.

We look forward to sharing the history of this projectand the vision for this new edition in future issues of theEl Shofar. For now, we ask that you submit your recipesfor consideration to our editorial committee [email protected].

Looking forward, with your input, to a stellar cookbookand the sharing of our rich and beautiful traditions.

OR CHADASH SISTERHOOD

Celebrating Reggie Arditti and SylviaKapon

By Katherine Cohen

Our two wonderfuland creative friends,Reggie Arditti andSylvia Kapon, werehonored at a specialSisterhood luncheonon November 20,2013. My memories

trace back many years with both Reggie and Sylvia.

It is appropriate that Reggie Arditti, now 103, behonored as our Sisterhood plans to publish a newSephardic cookbook. Reggie, as co-editor, and PearlRoseman, as editor, initiated our first cookbook thatwent to press in 1971. Recipes from women in ourcommunity welcomed volunteers into their homesto translate non-standard measurements into stan-dard measurements and test recipes so they couldbe easily prepared in any home. A half eggshell ofoil became a quarter cup and all the Ladino instruc-tions women had scribbled onto bits of paperneeded translation into English. Creating this cook-book was a work of love and years. The cookbookwas reviewed in the LA Times over a lunch Reggieprepared. The menu: boyos, burekas, fritadas, soutlatch and biscochos! The cookbook critic couldnot help being blown away by the Sephardic deli-cacies and Reggie remembers being blown away bythe number of cookbooks sold worldwide. Recently, Reggie came into the temple with herdaughter, Louise, to pick up two cookbooks for newcustomers! A woman who lost her cookbook inHurricane Sandy in New Jersey purchased one.Cooking the Sephardic Way continues to be used inmany homes. Reggie not only was an extraordinary

Sephardic chef, she served Sephardic Sisterhood asits president for several terms, treasurer and pro-gram vice president. Joseph Arditti, Reggie’s husband, served as our temple’s president. Congrat-ulations to Reggie Arditti, a well deserving womanwhose contribution to our synagogue community isimmeasurable.

Sylvia Kapon, now 95, lives near our synagogue inthe same home she and her husband, Mario, shared. After Mario passed away in 1982, Sylvia continuedto live a strong and active life. For years she pre-pared all the sweet tables for the weekly OnegShabbat, ordering the pastries and decorating theplatters. Sylvia also worked in the Matilda Seror GiftShop every day. Sylvia never hesitated to volunteerwhen the Sisterhood needed to prepare a Huevo.Sylvia also has been a speaker many times in our Talmud Torah, sharing her stories of growing up inSalonika, Greece. She also describes to the childrenhow she and her husband escaped the Nazis byhiding in Athens inhovels until the endof the War. Sadly, her mother and sis-ter were killed in the concentrationcamps. They hadlost everything whenthey returned to Sa-lonika after the war, including theirdaughter, Rachel, who died in a freakaccident. Sylvia andMario had onedaughter, Stella, who was born after the war in Sa-lonika and a son, Isaac, who was born in Los Ange-les. Despite the hardships of her early life, Sylviashowed the determination and strength to create afulfilling life for herself in our synagogue. Congratula-tions to Sylvia for being honored by Sisterhood. Youare a most deserving woman of valor.

LOS MERECIDOS RECIP IENTS

Jacqueline Amira-Slutske

What is Los Merecidos?Los Merecidos is a Ladino phrase which literallymeans “The Deserved Ones.” Since our communitywas originally started by Ladino speaking SephardicJews from Greece and Turkey the name stuck. In1981 the first “Los Merecidos” was awarded inrecognition of tireless efforts on behalf of our congregation and our Temple. Since then, there havebeen a number of members who have been recog-nized as leaders of our community for their passionand commitment to volunteer so that this communitywould continue to strive for future generations. Our2014 Los Merecidos recipients follow in the foot-steps of all the past honorees and we thank them allfor their hard work and commitment.

AROUND THE WORLD WITH LASHA

For the last few months, LASHA friendshave traveled the world with our new program,

WEDNESDAYS WITH LASHA. We have tasted foods

and have been entertained by the music of different

countries. We look forward to this continued

adventure as we explore our rich Sephardic cultures

and history.

LASHA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to

promoting the well being of the Sephardic seniors

in the greater Los Angeles area. In 1953-54 a small

farsighted group of dedicated Sephardic men and

women predicted the need for our organization

and laid the groundwork for LASHA as we know

it today.

LASHA helps us fulfill the commandment “Honor

Thy Father and Mother” by providing programs that

bring our seniors together and acknowledge that

their lives are important and they are not forgotten.

These programs for our seniors include luncheons,

resource assistance and social interaction for home-

bound seniors. Our staff and many volunteers inter-

face with seniors who are in need of assistance,

transportation or companionship. We work directly

with seniors, meeting them in their homes, and pro-

viding for their specific needs.

LASHA feels blessed and grateful to the President of

Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, Ben Mehdizadeh,

the Board of Directors and the office, grounds and

security staff for being such gracious hosts for our

programs. Levy Hall is the ideal location for our

lunch programs and the last three events have seen

the hall packed to capacity. We feel at home in the

synagogue and look forward to a continued and

long lasting relationship as we bring our seniors to-

gether in this warm and inviting home.

As we continue our Wednesdays with LASHA, we

welcome all of you, our temple community, your

familes and friends to our programs. Travel the World

with LASHA as we fulfill our Founders’ promise of

“Honoring our Fathers and Mothers”.

On behalf of LASHA, I wish all of you a warm and

delicious Pesach and look forward to meeting many

new friends at our events.

Shalom Haverim,

Marie Altchech

O n Valentine’s Day, as you exit a free-way off-ramp or drive down the streets of Los Angeles, the people you

see hawking red-and-white holiday bouquets on street corners may have more in common with you than you might ever imagine.

In the early 20th century, Sephardic immi-grants, many from the Mediterranean island of Rhodes, as well as from Turkey and Syria, got their first scent of success in America by selling flowers on L.A. street corners. From poor be-ginnings, often speaking only Ladino, they, and eventually their children and grandchildren, would go on to establish flower shops dotting the southland, as well buy real estate, and climb the economic ladder.

Two brothers, Joseph and Robert Cohen, whose parents were from Syria and Rhodes and who started out selling flowers on corners, are among those who branched out into real es-tate. Leon Moskatel, from Turkey, started with a flower shop downtown that would expand into florist supplies.

Flower shop owner Victor Levy, whose parents were from Rhodes, would become an organi-zational leader in the flower business, and Perry Hasson, son of flower-selling im-migrants, also from Rhodes, would hit upon an innovative way of selling flow-ers that is still with us today.

But long before that, for many Sep-hardic families, in-cluding that of my wife, Brenda —Perry Hasson was her fa-ther — the flower business meant ris-ing even before the flowers opened their petals to trek downtown to the L.A. wholesale flower markets to start to move those carnations and roses.

Joseph Cohen, born in Los Angeles in 1927 and one of seven children, has strong child-hood memories of his trips to the flower market with his father. “Afterwards, we would go have breakfast in the Flower Market Cafe. We would all get one giant order of hotcakes,” he remem-bered.

“When I was 12, on Sundays, my father had me run his flower stand on Long Beach Boule-vard and Vernon [Avenue],” said Cohen. “One day he came by and saw me playing with the guys. I never worked for him after that,” he said. Cohen spoke from his office above his son Morris’ flower shop, Moe’s Flowers, on Melrose

Avenue. His daughter, Rita Azur, ran the now-shuttered Rita Flora on La Brea Boulevard.

In 1943, at age 16, Joseph Cohen’s desire for a car drove him back into the business. A buddy has been drafted into the army and was selling a 1932 Ford roadster for $135 that Cohen just had to have. “How you going to pay me back?” asked his brother Al, who eventually loaned him the money.

The answer: selling flowers. After school, Cohen went to the

intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard and sold flowers in traffic. “It wasn’t long before I could pay him back,” Cohen said.

Lou Hasson, whose parents, Joseph and Grace, came to Los Angeles from Rhodes in 1921, remembers how “Sep-hardic Jews would stand on street cor-ners in downtown L.A. and sell flowers or shine shoes,” he said.

Hasson’s mother and his brother

Perry, who was born in 1925 and died in 1963, ran Flowers by Pierre on Whittier Boulevard, not far from Home of Peace cemetery. Perry Hasson’s wife, Shirley Berko, (my mother-in-law) recalls standing on a corner selling mixed bouquets for 52 cents a bunch even when preg-nant. “They probably felt sorry for me,” she sur-mised.

Soon after the Santa Ana Freeway opened in mid-1950s, Lou Hasson claims his brother Perry was the first to sell flowers at an off -ramp. “He hired two teenage Sephardic boys and dropped them off in the morning and picked them up at the end of the day,” recalled Has-son, a founding partner of Green Hasson Janks, a Los Angeles accounting firm.

Continuing in the family tradition, Susie Hasson Levey, a granddaughter of Joseph and

Grace, sells flowers on Sundays at the Encino Farmers Market.

For Joseph Cohen, selling flowers in traffic proved too hard. In 1946, he moved up in the business by selling sweet peas on the corner of Cahuenga Boulevard and Riverside Drive. “I made $35 a day,” he recalled.

In 1950, Cohen opened the La Cienega Flower Shop with his sis-ter Sue. Finding the going tough, he also started selling roses, carnations and violets on the corner of Barham Boulevard and Forest Lawn Drive. An old hand in the business advised that to increase sales, he should pour a little cologne into the buckets holding the violets.

At La Cienega, after trying his hand at arrangements, Cohen real-ized he could do better simply by selling cut flowers. “I was not a flo-rist, but I did know how to buy and sell,” he said.

“I used to love the flower market, that was my baby,” said Cohen, who enjoyed the business challenge, especially when flowers were scarce or the market was flooded.

“The biggest days were Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day,” said Cohen, who found a niche by putting out large, colorful displays for passersby to see.

In 1964, Cohen purchased a property at La Cienega Boulevard and Melrose

Avenue, where he put up a new building. Eventually his purchase of a street corner in Beverly Hills for a flower stand led to an even larger development on the property. “My brother Bobby [also in the flower business] and I built the Four Seasons Hotel,” Cohen said.

“I didn’t know anything else. I was just a kid,” Cohen said of his career in flowers. Today,

he raises amaryllis on his nine-acre ranch in Malibu and remembers the 25 years of having breakfast with his brothers at the Flower Mar-ket talking about flower prices, fishing and girls as “some of the best times of my life.”

Other Sephardic florists parlayed their ex-periences differently. In the 1930s, according

to “Sending Flowers to America: Stories of the Los Angeles Flower Market” by Peggi Ridgeway and Jan Works (2008, American Florist’s Exchange), Leon Moskatel, an immi-grant from Turkey born in 1902, set up a retail flower shop on Wall Street in downtown Los Angeles, where, to supplement selling cut flowers he also began selling floral supplies.

After Sam Ap-plebaum, his first cousin, joined the

business, the two men shifted their focus to merchandising floral supplies. Eventually pur-chased by Michael’s craft supply stores after Moskatel’s death in 1962, the store remains to this day under its original name, Moskatels.

“They were very generous to each other,” Ridgeway said of the Jewish immigrants who did business at the flower market. “Especially good to their own countrymen,” she added.

Victor Levy, born in 1927, recalls at least seven Sephardic-owned flower shops in Long Beach, some within just a few blocks of one another. “When one did well, others moved in; most were relatives,” said Levy, who opened Victor’s flower shop in Lakewood in 1954, and, over time, added locations in Cypress, Long Beach and Norwalk.

Levy, who was elected president of both the Florists’ Transworld Delivery (FTD) in 1980 and the Southern California Floral Association in 1973, said he “loved the flower business, work-ing with nature and beauty. I didn’t have to wear a necktie,” he said.

“The flower business has been good to all us Sephardics,” said Levy, who retired in 1985 and whose daughter, Melinda Evans, carries on in the business in Long Beach. “It’s a way for immigrants, all immigrants, to get into main-stream America,” he said, noting that many stores have now been sold to Koreans. “The Koreans have taken over where the Sephardics left off,” he said.
