This week we celebrated the academic achievement of our students at an Academic Awards Ceremony. While this occasion was a recognition of the many intellectual achievements, it was also an opportunity for us to once more gather with the wider OLSH community, joining in the applause for nearly 100 awardees. At OLSH College Bentleigh we are committed to life‐long learning and a culture of learning and engagement that pushes the boundaries of our capabilities. Even during this ceremony we went beyond by using web link technology to connect the whole College community – both in Bentleigh and at our Hartzer campus in Bowral. This allowed our Issoudun girls and staff at Hartzer to watch and listen to every word, as well as our Issoudun girls to receive their awards in real time in another state while we were watching here in Bentleigh. How wonderfully inclusive technology can be. What is the award criteria? Consistent Application to Studies recognises students who have exhibited consistent academic endeavour, while working diligently and conscientiously. These students are motivated self‐starters; they have demonstrated effective use of class time and have been persistent in the completion of their school work. Academic Achievement recipients have demonstrated an outstanding level of application and endeavour across a number of subjects. These students have achieved results that reflect a high standard for their year level. Academic Excellence recipients have performed with academic distinction; they have approached their studies with rigour and enthusiasm achieving exemplary results in their subjects. VCE Subject Awards acknowledge the students who have demonstrated the highest level of academic excellence in each Unit 3 subject. These students have approached their studies with consistency, organisation and diligence.

Detentions We have introduced a new procedure in relation to notifying parents and students of detentions. Parents and students will receive an email stating that the student is expected to attend a detention. Parents are asked to reply to the email so that we know that you have received the notification. Students are expected to attend the detention on the date specified in the email. You are reminded that detentions will be issued for uniform infringements, out of bounds, behaviour, tardiness and failure to adhere to College rules.
Social Media Parents are reminded to regularly check their daughter’s activity on Social Media. As part of the College’s ongoing education in this area, Susan McLean, a world renowned expert on cybersafety will address our students on August 18. We need to work together in partnership to ensure the students are using technology in a safe and appropriate manner. An extract from Raising Space Cadets by Michael Grose. Parenting Ideas. “Learning to stop and think before reacting is one of the most valuable life skills a child can develop.”
Parents and schools can work together to help our children learn these skills. Michael Grose’s simple graphic below sets out a useful process to teach our children this skill. The process leads to high emotional awareness which not only leads to better responses, but also leads to better regulation of emotions and behaviour. This is important to long term wellbeing, success and happiness.

Italian Language and Culture at OLSH Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation and Original Speech Writing State Competitions On Friday June 20, the Year 10 Italian students participated in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition. The girls recited a poem to an assessor and were judged on expression, accurate pronunciation and overall delivery of the poem. We then explored the grounds of Melbourne University, visiting different faculty buildings and the Student Information Centre where we collected brochures on undergraduate courses and learnt that the University has its own postcode! Congratulations to Veronica Fell (Year 10) who was short listed as a state finalist for the Poetry Recitation and Alyssa Jopling (Year 12) who was shortlisted as a state finalist for her original speech. Thank you to Ms Riviello and Ms Graffeo for facilitating the day and encouraging us to do our best! Bravissme ragazze!
The World of Caravaggio and Gentileschi This term the Year 10 Italian Language class focused on the topic of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art. We researched these historical periods and learnt about the history of Italian artists. The two main Italian artists we studied were Artemisia Gentileschi and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. For our language assessment, we engaged in a 15 minute conversation and discussion in Italian with Ms Riviello. Part 1 focused on general conversation skills where we spoke about family, friends and school. Part 2 was a discussion on Caravaggio or Gentileschi with an analysis of a chosen artwork.

In Canberra
Our National Capital
An exciting part of the Hartzer Campus experience is the two‐day visit to our national capital, Canberra. This year, students enjoyed tours of the Australian Institute of Sport, Parliament House, The Australian War Memorial, The Museum of Democracy, the embassy and diplomatic district, The National Portrait Gallery and The National Capital Exhibition. At Parliament House, students and staff were enthralled by the antics of the federal parliamentarians during question time in the House of Representatives. They also had an opportunity to debate the 1964 Conscription legislation inside the senate chambers of Old Parliament House. The girls debated the bill with rigour and passion before voting in favour of national conscription. At the War Memorial many students were able to research the histories of family members who had served in war and conflict. The exhibits captivated students as they learnt of the personal stories and experiences of the thousands of Australians who have served and lost their lives at war. At the end of the day, students were privileged to lay a wreath on behalf of OLSH College, Bentleigh at the Last Post Ceremony. Students collected stories of ordinary and extraordinary Australians and gained an appreciation of all that our unique national capital has to offer. Ms Adele Schocker The highlight of our two days in Canberra was the AIS. I loved the hands on activities. Emma Brierty I found it interesting that Canberra was designed via a competition. The highlight for me was the AIS because of the varied and different facilities. Morgan Higgins The most fascinating part of Canberra for me was seeing the old war stories in the War Memorial. Emily Laursen
Our highlight was question time in Canberra. It was interesting to hear the varied views and opinions. It was different as this was such a new experience. We loved it!! Claudia Carter and Alannah Mavronas I enjoyed Parliament House especially question time. We heard Tony Abbott, Bill Shorten and Joe Hockey speak. We were there on such an important day where the carbon tax was abolished. Rochelle Theophilus
College News
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist parents in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per eligible student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the Hartzer experience. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.

Performing Arts News International Music Tour “I’m going on an adventure” Bilbo Baggins, The Hobbit
Over the first week of the term two school holidays, students from the OLSH Choral Program embarked on the first ever International Choral Tour to New Zealand. What an adventure! Our time was jam packed with activities. To start our tour, we sang at Auckland Girls Grammar, Hillcrest High School and a lovely retirement village. Our repertoire included a mixture of Australian compositions, and a variety of works from many different countries that we had learnt throughout the year.
We visited Whakarewaewa, a living thermal village where we learnt firsthand how the Maori culture has harnessed the land for both practical and recreational use. Our group was able to try a delicious Hangi lunch, which was traditionally cooked underground. We experienced a performance where we saw traditional things like the Haka – a traditional war dance ‐and a hauntingly beautiful love story. The Maori group invited us to perform
a song to them which was well received. The trip was a success and the performances were all fantastic. One favourite was the opportunity to sing in the Cathedral Cave at the Waitomo Caves. We were able to record our songs amidst the amazing acoustics and we all loved the experience. On the last few days, we became tourists, visiting places that were simply spectacular. We went on many wonderful walks and our final destination was the much loved Hobbiton. We went on a
guided tour around the Shire and learnt loads about the filming of the Hobbit movie and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. On behalf of the girls, we would like to thank Mrs Mentlikowski who organised the trip and the teachers who accompanied us: Ms Perrin, Ms Schocker, Sr Megan Donohue and Ms O’Loughlin. The trip was an amazing opportunity and experience for all involved: –Laura Kent, Veronica Fell, Tara Rohan, Tia Horrobin, Laura Halliday, Jessica Thatcher, Eliza‐Rose Hoskin, Tahira Tannen, Lisa Kirui, Piwai Kahond, Ruby Allardice, Paige Marken and Angela Edgley.
