EDITOR’S REPORT
Welcome back to Dog Training in 2019 and happy 40th birthday to MUDTC

produced quarterly rather than monthly, but updates about what is happening at
Dog Club are always posted to our Facebook Group or announced at training, so
you will still be able to keep up to date with everything going on.
Over the Christmas/New Year break your executive and committee spent many
hours working on a draft new Constitution and new methods for taking payment
and memberships. The Club’s Constitution has now been submitted to NSW
Department of Fair Trading for approval and our new membership/payment
system is up and running. Thank you to everyone involved in working through the
summer break to make sure we were ready for the start of 2019. We are now able
to offer members the choice to pay fees electronically or via bank transfer and I’m
pleased to say that many members have taken advantage of these new facilities.
Another project for 2019 is the preparation of guidelines for the conducting of our
annual Club Obedience and Agility competitions. We will not be holding the compe-
titions this year, but instead will hold a fun day in the cooler months with mock
trials, agility and jumping and other activities that you will be able to have a try at
including fly ball, treiball , tricks, disc and possibly other dog sports with the em-
phasis on having a good time with your dog with no pressure.
Happy training!

CONTACT US:
Milton Ulladulla Dog Training Club was formed in 1979 by a group of volunteers with a
keen interest in helping others train their dogs. The Club’s principles remain the same
today as all our committee and instructors are volunteers who have a lot of knowledge
which they enjoy sharing with you. The Club is not affiliated to Dogs NSW (ANKC) but
we do have members who compete in both Obedience and Rally O trials. The Club is
affiliated to ADAA for agility and several members compete in this discipline. Our
Instructors will be very pleased to assist anyone who has an interest in trialling their
dog to achieve their aim.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Happy Easter holiday everyone I hope you enjoy good times with family and
friends. We have started the year with lots of new innovations, including a reas-
sessment of our class structure and content. The Club now has a Baby Puppy
Class, Quick Start class which runs for 4 weeks, and then Classes 1, 2 and 3.
Your dog will be assessed before graduating from Class 1 to 2 and then 2 to 3.
Thank you to Diane who is holding Rally O practice at 7.30am on two Sundays in
the month, instead of only once a month.
Regular practice with your dog is essential to keep progressing, 5 minutes each
day is good, but you can keep practicing at any time during the day. When your
dog sits or looks at you make sure you react and praise every time, be alert for
any appropriate behaviours your dog offers and make sure your dog knows it has
done the right thing and give a reward.
I was very pleased with the first of our Trick Training classes, and look forward to
seeing everyone again at the next class on Saturday 13 April.
In this Newsletter you will find a list of dates that we share the Showground with
other groups, please ensure your dog is on lead and under control especially on
the days we share with the Ulladulla District Riders.
I was honoured to again be elected as your President at the
Club’s AGM last November. Thank you very much to those
members who stood for re-election, or for the first time in a
position. On behalf of all members I express my very sincere
appreciation and thanks to retiring committee members
Cheryl Ball (Treasurer & Baby Puppy Instructor) and Margaret
Rudd (New Member Officer). Both Cheryl and
Margaret have given outstanding dedication and support to
the Milton Ulladulla Dog Training Club over many years. I am
pleased that Margaret is able to continue on Committee as
our Publicity Officer, a job she is very well qualified to
perform, thank you Margaret. My thanks also to Assistant
Instructor Rosemary Rixon who has stepped down from that
role, but we very much appreciate that she has taken on the
job of preparing the treat bags for training - thank you so much. Your
committee members are listed on the next page -
Thank you Margaret

Separation Anxiety
Separation anxiety in dogs when they are left alone is manifested in various
ways including hysterical barking, chewing, and pacing, inappropriate urination
and escape attempts. If your dog has separation anxiety, you need to work hard
to fix it. This is best accomplished by a program of desensitization.
The signs of separation anxiety may include the following when left alone: bark-
ing or howling, destructive behaviour such as chewing/scratching objects or fur-
niture, inappropriate toileting or self mutilation or chewing.
Start by leaving your dog for short periods. You may have to begin by only leav-
ing your dog in another room, for a very short period of time. Return to your
dog before they start whimpering/barking or chewing - and reward. Then extend
the time by very small increments, until your dog settles quietly alone for a
while. Go outside your front door and close it. Return before the dog starts to
exhibit stress symptoms. Extend the time as your dog gets more tolerant of
your absence.
When you go out do not make a fuss of your departure: no good-byes, no “I
won’t be long”. Make sure you are not predictable in your departure routine.
Try to vary the way you leave, by different doors, at different times, different
clothing and shoes if possible. Pick up the car keys and not leave the house, set
the alarm but do not leave for work. Making your return uneventful. In other
words return and ignore your dog for a few minutes and then say hello quietly,
there is plenty of time for cuddles later on.
Leave your dog in a safe area with plenty of chew toys, stuffed kongs or a bone
to occupy him during your absence.
Do not punish your dog for any damage done during your absence. The dog will
not make the connection between the punishment and his destructive behav-
iour.
If separation anxiety continues then see the advice of a professional
behaviourist.

A nice example of your dog’s colour range. Great to understand when
hiding toys and adding complexity to those hides i.e. using orange
and red toys in grass is particularly hard for them to see, so
encourages their nose to work harder. (Artist unknown)

Milton 150th Show
Dog Club members were busy at this year’s 150th Milton Show. Members were
invited to take part in the Grand Parade with their dogs. Then our demonstration team performed in the Championship Dog Ring to an appreciative audience. Satur-

Always Learning
Member Billie Macleod is currently at-
tending a Dr Susan Friedman and Peta Clarke seminar on Studying Behaviour
Analysis etc and Learning about Learning. Billie has been accepted as a Provisional
Member in the Pet Professional Guild Aus-tralia (PPGA).
Billie tells us she is very glad she teaches and reinforces all her dogs not to chase
any animals. One of her dogs, Sashi, al-ways alert barks with snakes from a dis-
tance. Recently Sashi found this baby Tawny Frogmouth on the ground after a
big windy weekend a few months ago. The
bird is now raised and soft released back into the bush environment where Billie
lives.
